A royal 'pain in the coax...'

"The cable industry can be certain of one thing as the Bush administration enters its final laps: Kevin Martin has been a huge pain in the coax," says Multi-channel News. The push for "a la carte," his indecency campaigns, the set-top box waiver dispute, his pro-telco franchise reform push and, most recently, the capping of ownership limits have all led cable to recently complain they're being picked on. Cable providers say it all stems back to a debate during the Adelphia deal, where Martin tried to force "a la carte" provisions on cable providers (they instead offered half-hearted "family friendly" tiers). Is it really personal, or does cable simply need to increase their lobbying expenditure?

This just in:

Comcast has just empaneled some of the leading practitioners in the little known field of Traumatic Proctology to map out their next round of rate increases.

FWIW...

Cable companies have a point!

While Archaic Telephone & Telegraph was busy making excuses about why they can't deliver DSL, Comcast deployed fiber right into my rural-backwater neighborhood.

The FCC should get the hell out of the way of the cable companies that are *actually* deploying broadband.

Twice as much.

Cable's 30% cap is now twice as much! Just like Comcrap's 6Mb Cable is TWICE AS FAST AS DSL! Im still trying to figure out how 6Mb on cable is twice as fast as 6Mb on DSL. Some don't understand that 6Mb is 6Mb. It's like which would you rather be crushed by. A ton of bricks or a ton of feathers. A ton is a ton.

In really really really really small print

And you're new to the term "powerboost". My "6 Meg" connection averages 9, consistently, whereas DSL doesn't do that, or even offer it.

Yeah, but only 9mbps for the first five megabytes then you drop back to six.

Starband has a slogan that goes something like "If you can see the southern sky, you can get Starband".

The phone companies need a similar slogan like "If you can see our DSLAM, you can get 6Mb DSL".

Comcast is running ads in my market advertising how much faster their service is as compared to our local telco's DSL. The funny part of the ad is that our local telco isn't activelly selling DSL anymore. They are actively selling FiOS that right now has nearly 2x the highest speed that Comcast offers. I guess they forgot to mention that in the ad.

I guess you forgot to mention that those ads cross boundary lines.. and I guess you forgot to mention that I'm sure the entire are is not Fios served.

Those ads would primarily targeted to Allen country. AFAIK, all COs except one that are DSL equiped also have been upgraded for FiOS. By far the target audience in the urban and suburban markets all have access to FiOS. But what you say is true for the more rural or border areas that are not serviced by FiOS but by Comcast.

The point was that Comcast specifically targeted the telcos slower offering even though something faster and better was available. A more extreme example would be if Comcast said it was 100x faster the Verizon's 56k dialup. While yes it's true, it's also not a real fair comparison for a vast majority of customers who can get quite a bit more then just dialup.

6Mb cable is faster than 6Mb AT&T DSL provided it is working correctly and the node is not oversold (but nowhere near twice as fast). DSL has overhead for the ATM and PPPoE layers from which cable does not suffer, so with DSL you generally get throughput at about 85% of the sync rate. (Some DSL providers oversync so your throughput is actually at the advertised speed, but not AT&T). Still, in my area 5/512 RoadRunner is $45 with cable TV services, and 6/768 (~ 5/650) AT&T DSL is only $35. In my neighborhood, both are stable. So for $10 less per month, AT&T delivers about the same downstream and a bit more upstream.

They are comparing their standard service to the DSL standard service, which is probably 3Mbps. Read the fine print.

On the other hand a Ton (2000 Pounds) of Gold is much lighter than either a Ton of Bricks or Feathers. This is due to the use of an ounce (Troy oz.) that while it is slightly larger (approximately 10 percent) than the standard Avoirdupois ounce used for normal weighing has only 12 [not 16] Troy oz. to the Troy lb. thus making the Avoirdupois/Standard lb. heavier than the Troy lb.
