See, that's what I like. An intelligent, unbiased response from an actual user.

Thank you so much for your intellectually stimulating input, it is much appreciated.

Thank you for the adolescence. The fact that he's right doesn't detract from the fact that he's right and you're just mouthing the Apple Fangrrl mantra.

Speak about the product when you actually purchased and used it. Otherwise...grow up.

And your response is any less adolescent?

How can anyone, including yourself, who hasn't actually used the product say he's right?

Jackass...

I'm not mouthing anyone's "Fangrrl mantra" as I haven't even seen the damn thing. Hence, I have no standing to make a comment concerning the actual product.

If you or him had actual product in hand, and said "it stinks because" then it would be a valid opinion.

It really is ironic that you accuse me of mouthing Apple's "Fangrrl mantra" when all you're doing is mouthing the anti Apple "Fangrrl mantra" yourself. I'm not saying the product is good, bad, or shitty. I was just pointing out that someone who obviously hadn't used the thing (most likely like yourself) was saying it's shitty (like yourself).

Personally, I didn't purchase the product, as I don't see a need for it, and I'll stick with my cable co's DVR for the present time.

So, to recap;

1: In calling my comments "adolescent" (I would've preferred sophomoric, but I digress) you sound just as, if not more adolescent than myself.

2: In accusing me of towing the Apple "Fangrrl mantra" you tow the anti Apple "Fangrrl mantra" even more than I tow any pro Apple"Fangrrl mantra".

Good talk, Rus....

BTW, I admit that most of not ALL of my posts are adolescent, if not pointless. See, this is an internet message board, and not a court of law, and I just don't take myself THAT seriously....

Re: I guess if we stuck MythTV in a white box....

The problem with MythTV as I have discovered, by installing and using it, is getting it installed and using it.
I finally had to resort to MythDora, and my remote still doesn't work.

Ha! You and the runny kitty above you can both go pound sand.

You twits have no problem criticizing products you have never used nor ever will, so don't preach at me from your wobbly, worm-infested pulpit, you hypocrite.

Your attack on him was utterly against the posting rules here as well, by the way. It provided no content except to attack someone who had expressed his opinion, and did not reference the opinion at all. Say hello to Mr. Hey Mods.

Re: I guess if we stuck MythTV in a white box....

You can call "Mr. Hey Mods" all you want, I really couldn't care less.

Calling me a twit and a hypocrite is probably more likely to get the ax, then my sarcastic jab to the ribs there fella.

As a matter of fact, I took a look at the posting FAQ and terms of service. I can't see where my initial post violates either. I also noticed that "Hey modding" people is, and I quote from the FAQ on Moderation "not a way for members to harass others on the site." I also noticed the suggestion "it may be that it's time to become a little more tolerant."

Lighten up, Francis....

Being "a little more tolerant" would be good advice for you to follow, instead of acting like a 14 year old. Your tired, trite "/sarcasm off" drivel fails to mask the troll-like smell which you emit.

I agree. Someone can say "others may imitate, but nothing's like an Apple", but when a person says something like the first post in this news thread, they get his garbage.

Including playing DivX, which according to the linked thread, AppleTV doesn't. That's a fatal flaw for such a device right from the start. Do yourself a favor. Put the $299 toward an HTPC.

here here! My mac mini should be on it's way soon.

Now my big question is will bootcamp install windows MCE (i know it says it does not support it)?

I still want to retain dual boot capabilities with it....but there's nothing in the apple/i* world that can compete with MCE.

If there is - show me. I don't just want playback, i want recording - and full integration.

»forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=192355 There is a guide to get it to work. You may also want to try Windows Vista Home Premium (get it OEM), but I am not sure if that would work. Look around the web an you should be able to find out.

There are a number of problems with Vista on a Mini the least of which is drivers. If you have a recent mini there is no reason to run a Win Media Center. Late minis have Front Row.

If MCE is what you want, you're better off buying a crap box Dell refurb and running MCE on that.

Re: Too limited

I didn't say i wanted vista, i said i wanted MCE. I don't want vista at all - at least not for now.

So I don't need media center, then? Front row will show me a TV schedule....let me pick what i want to record, and record it for me? Really....cause i'm sure that's a shocker to alot of people.

There are PLENTY of reasons to run media center - maybe not for you, but for me there are.

Again, i specifically said something that will also let me RECORD - not just play. Front Row is fine for playing, and there's a good chance that's what i will be using 75% of the time - i do want MCE, though, to see how well the mini does as a DVR/recorder.

MCE on a Mini won't record either. What are you going to record from? What USB TV tuner are you planning on using with a Mini running MCE?

I've always had frustration with MCE as a DVR, not because it doesn't work, but because so much programming requires a stand alone box and MCE's IR blasters. Then it's a question of will MCE's IR blaster drivers work with the Mini and will a USB TV tuner/capture board work with the mini.

Re: Too limited

The drivers i have for MCE for my TV tuner card won't work under MCE? I'm not running under emulation, so why would the drivers not work?

MCE is installed in 2 steps, first is XP then after reboot it installed the MCE components. The first step wouldn't be a problem, it's the second that would be in question and my answer would be I'm not sure.

Re: Too limited

MCE does install in two steps, but you need a MCE/XP disk for step 1 - at least i've never gotten it to work with one of my standard XP SP2 disks....i've had to use the MCE disk 1, and then disk 2 (MCE) to get an actual MCE going.

Not saying it can't be done, but that's how i've had to do it. I didn't anticipate any major problems, though.

hmmm.....

Does anyone else think that this looks like an enhanced version of the Front Row software that comes with any apple core (2)duo laptop, imac, or mini?

The only thing that appears different is that it will attach directly to your HD TV?

No Cables?

I watched the video and it doesn't include any cables other than the power cord? Do they at least let you know that so you are prepared to run out and go get some HDMI or component cables etc...

That's like getting your new toy at Christmas and realizing that "Batteries Are Not Included".

Who is going to buy this?

I don't understand why someone would buy this? If someone were in the market for TV recording they would probally rent a DVR from their provider (Be it satellite or cable) Apple needs to consider their market more before shelling out something that probally wont be profitable.

This isn't new at all..

One thing that always annoys me about modern video/audio products is how a company gets to call what was "illegal downloading" "innovative" - this isn't a new concept. It's been almost a year now where you could subscribe to a $15/mo service(usenet), get a TV show a la carte, choose a quality level that suits you(PMP level quality, playable on xbox and better looking quality, or full out 720p), and grab it.

What annoys me more is that they're still better. There's no DRM involved in the old way. There's no "it'll only work on this device" involved in the old way. There's no "this costs just as much if not MORE money than buying the season on DVD" way. And there's no "this is the best there is because it's apple, we have nice packaging, it's in a white box so it's the best" arrogance in the old way.
