$97 million shocker of a deal

Speakeasy this morning has announced that the broadband provider has been acquired by electronics retail giant Best Buy for $97 million. Founded in 1994, Speakeasy started in Seattle as an Internet cafe. They made a name for themselves as a national customer-focused and community-friendly broadband provider. Gamers in particular flocked to their service in the late nineties. The company has long had a consistent and helpful presence in our forums.

"Best Buy, like Speakeasy, is known for its high level of customer service," insists Speakeasy CEO Bruce Chatterley in an e-mail to customers. Just so we're straight, this is the same Best Buy recently busted for operating a secret internal Best Buy website used to scam customers out of advertised deals? The same Best Buy that operates the much hated (at least among those who know the difference between SATA and ATA) Geek Squad?

Best Buy is insisting that nothing will change -- though given the philosophical chasm between the two companies we find it hard to believe. "We have a high regard for Speakeasy's employees, their culture, and their valued relationships with customers and vendors," says Best Buy CFO Darren Jackson. "They have a strong customer service-oriented approach, which is an excellent fit with Best Buy's culture and direction."

Good god Mirna... get over yourselves. You think throwing out a typical generic hate comment that may or may not come true makes you look good now? or will it look better IF in the future what you say comes true.

Very few people here really know what they're talking about and it only shows the level of child like mentality of those that come here and bash something that hasn't even happened yet.

Why would you leave speak easy just because BB purchased them? Why not wait until or unless you see a reason? Maybe the service might even improve or get more competitive in price... after all they aren't the cheapest game in town.

Speak Easy does have good business follow through, but when I've worked when them (as I am a partner) on home installations, they aren't the greatest.. and their speeds have often been less that of the incumbent.

So who knows.. maybe Best Buy will improve the service and the prices might even line up a little better with others.

To be honest.. this site has lost it.. let me tell you what BBR used to be.. It used to be a place for people to get help with broadband issues.. finding services, help with problems they have that can't get resolved elsewhere..

today.. BBR is a place where a story is posted, and 5000 people can't wait to jump in and bitch about it.. sounds more like a Jewish wedding more than a discussion forum.. and believe me, I've been to enough Jewish weddings..

Everyone has a right to their opinion.. but really, why not just post a story and turn it into a poll with out comment? The comments are always the same... doesn't matter.

I don't need to base my optimism on anything.. that's ridiculous. So what exactly IS Best Buy's "existing practices"... ? I live in the city where best buy is head quartered.. they're on every street corner here. They have a store, the offer a product.. you enter the store, you pick out a product, you buy the product, they may offer you a magazine subscription but people think best buy is trying to infect them with the HIV virus because they are asked a question, you walk out the door.. sometimes checked, you leave. If that is SOOOOOO bad, don't shop there. You have many choices. Where's the conspiracy on THIS corporate mater? Everyone has a bigger plan, after all.

You, and others, may not like my position on things, but just as you have a right to post your view, I do to. (and there are people here that DO agree with me... I hear it all the time) And, just like me, if someone is going to post a message here, it's fair game, just like mine are.

We don't shop there. At least I don't. But it's a bit different if Best Buy (with their high prices, poor-service, and juvenile staff) buys one of the best rated ISP's in the United States. If Best Buy runs its own business so inefficiently, then a LOGICAL conclusion would be that they'll do the same for their purchased assets.
You, and others, may not like my position on things, but just as you have a right to post your view, I do to. (and there are people here that DO agree with me... I hear it all the time) And, just like me, if someone is going to post a message here, it's fair game, just like mine are.
Let's get something straight. You're the one who came in here bitching about us. NOT VICE VERSA. You're the one who doesn't want to see us complaining about Best Buy. Have to agree, I was in my local best buy the other day just to see if they had any awesome deals.....nope sure did not...anyhow, I was standing near the video cards and a freak squad guy came walking by in his seceret agent white shirt and tie, a father and son were looking at a video card, they had 4x AGP and the card was 8X, they stopped the freak and asked him if it would work he said " all I know id there is AGP & PCI-E" and walked off, after he left I told them what they needed to know.

hope this type of customer service and knowlege does not go to speakeasy

I would expect so, as a) it's the business side of BB that's buying SE and b) SE doesn't have nearly the reach that Big Telco, Big Cable, Earthlink, etc. do (and especially here in Atlanta, where it's nearly impossible to get anything besides IDSL from SE unless you live in an older home inside the Perimeter...if I had my way, I'd probably have SE and not SF, but I don't. )

Agreed on the possible optimism for the business side of things. The VOIP offering is likely the 'jewel' Best Buy seeks.
Of course, Speakeasy's dealings with small individual customers may suffer as a result of the new small business oriented emphasis.
Agreed, as the spiral had already begun over the past year or two. Still pretty good support when called in, but a lot of other aspects have been lacking. If Best Buy can improve it, fantastic! Sadly, it seems unlikely from their past integrations.

Speakeasy has been going down the tubes for some time now. In fact, I'm betting that the reason Best Buy bought them now is because the customer service offered by both entities is no equally bad.

Unbelievable...

We have a Speakeasy T-1 at work. I recommended them because I've used them in the past for ADSL and SDSL lines. They have always been reliable and their technical staff is excellent.

However, this is a terrible move. Best Buy is the antithesis of support. I used to work for them, so I know. Say goodbye to the Speakeasy we knew, because I guarantee Best Buy will screw it up.

We had an SE SDSL connection at work for a couple years, on my recommendation. No complaints. We wanted faster and to mix in our phone service with them. SE was in the top 5 but Covads IAD solution won out. Now I'm very glad they did! Support and service aside, I just can't imagine having our primary business connectivity provided by...Best Buy.

The Speakeasy we knew departed a while back. They always had someone on the Speakeasy forum here, but when Adam A left that ended. Their phone support is still good, but that will possibly be out sourced. Would be nice if they dropped the price of the DSL.

Oh great...

This is just a way to make quick cash by Best Buy. They are going to push this service down customer's throats, as if being asked to sign up for magazines I don't want at the checkout counter wasn't enough.

That would be Speakeasy's reputation and credibility circling the bowl.

Personally, as long as www.speakeasy.net/speedtest remains intact, it won't break my heart.
Of course, that's probably the first thing on BB's chopping block.

Make sure you take out a Performance Service Plan on the speed test JUST IN CASE it breaks or you don't get your advertised speeds you can return your speed test and wait 6 weeks for it to return from the repair center.

Geek Squad is a joke.
BB customer service cares more about discussing WoW levels (no offense to WoW gamers here) then actually working.
BB Geek Squad will open your new purchase, make you wait, and they will activate Nortons/McAfee prior to you leaving store because you know, it's your fault your PC doesn't work from that point on.
BB pricing (see the internal website fiasco).
Their management discriminates (see court cases pending) against age.
Their loss-ratio from inside theft is higher than Home Depot .
They expect the consumer to gladly funnel in their theme-park waiting line to get to a register (4 open out of 16...on a Saturday).

9 times out of 10 BB has given me bad customer service. Their credit service stinks and continually ripped me off. Their salespeople didn't know the basics of the items they were trying to sell me and everytime I needed support it took over an hour of waiting in line.

I spent thousands at Best Buy before they totally destroyed any chance I'd spend any money there. Since then Circuit City has received most of my business.

I actually use best buy quite a bit. I shop around for the lowest prices and buy online to save sales taxes and a couple bucks by picking it up a state over. 20 minute ride at worst.

I use thier rewards system because my wife buys so many games. It actually saves me quite a few hundred dollars a year.

Geeksquad is great ! I get thier customers on a weekly basis !
