No one is equating their being a skit on SNL to them having a public access channel.
Part of the skit on SNL was that they were shown on a fictional public access channel. It was part of the joke.... -- FCC, PLEASE KILL THE MERGER BEFORE THE MERGER KILLS SATRAD!

| I'm trying, I really am....
Listen, I'm not trying to be combative or argumentative, but how many times have you seen the front page of BBR and the associate pics Karl posts with them? Heck, You've been a member here longer than I have.
Often, when 2 broadband providers are going head to head, the accompanying shot is of 2 rock 'em sock 'em robots in the ring. Sometimes, when it's a "David vs. Goliath" story, he runs a picture of Rocky in front of the tall Russian boxer from Rocky IV (I think it's IV).
Right now, the story on the front page concerning the world record data transfer is accompanied by a picture of Speed Racer.
None of these photos has anything to do with the actual story. They are subtle attempts to weave a bit of pop culture into the existing story to make the front page of the website more interesting and visual pleasing.
Hope this helped... -- FCC, PLEASE KILL THE MERGER BEFORE THE MERGER KILLS SATRAD!

| Another lame news channel Verizon channel will be nothing more than another lame news channel. The local station did more than just do news, sports, and weather. Though there were a lot of people that don't watch the local channel, there are many other people that do.
The local station here showed whole segments covering town events, school sports events, town meetings, graduations and so on. I don't think Verizon will go that far.

| They should Public access is a good place for someone to learn how to make a show. If Verizon wanted to cheap out, they can make a channel like Youtube, taking digital video that people send in and rebroadcasting. That way they look hip and appease the public access interest. | It's all about control Just like Wayne and Garth, when they are taken over by the 'man', Verizon is looking to use this as an excuse to push THEIR brand of propoganda on the masses. Think there will ever be a news story about a Verizon Install nightmare? Nope. Think there will ever be a fluff piece about how verizon helps the community? All the time. Citizen Kane can't hold a candle up to todays megacorps. They tell you what to watch, when to watch it, where you can watch it, on what device you can watch it, and to add insult to the injury, provide less than 41 minutes per hour of the actual show. Most 1 hour shows are 41 minutes or less, (LOST is a whopping 39 minutes). So why don't we all be good doobee's, and buy what they tell us to buy. Because the terrorist want to destroy our society if you don't. YOU aren't a terrorist? are you? -- Stick it to the MAN. Support your local torrent sites. | I don't see how this is the end of Public Access...Way to m I don't get it, just because there offering local news doesn't mean they'll never offer public access. Public Access isn't even mentioned in the article. While they may not, one has no real effect on the other. Cablevision at my home has public access channels and news 12, a local news channel. Time Warner Cable here offers public access and News 9, a local news channel. They also have channel 3 which is a local sports(college and high school) channel.
The negative overreacting to this is ridiculous.

It seems that most everyone in this thread missed the point that Verizon is providing a local access channel as a requirement by the local governments (in NY anyway), in order to get their video franchise licence not because the are trying to be generous or spread propaganda. I don't really think they would do it if they didn't have to. Otherwise thread has been interesting and funny at times.
