3G has to be deployed first...at&t has so little 3G deployed, its pathetic. Most of Los Angeles (2nd largest market) has either little or no 3G service available from at&t/Cingular, not to mention Denver, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, etc. This is as bad as their lightspeed deployment. I live in 5 miles from Los Angeles city limits and we 'might' see 3G service by 2008 quote: AT&T executives said separately yesterday that the carrier expects to add another 58 to 65 HSDPA markets by the end of the year.
And for the bad news... mobile spammarketing quote: Meanwhile, the company will also run a trial of mobile advertising in the second quarter to test some types of mobile ads and study their impact on the customer experience.

Re: 3G has to be deployed first...Yeah it's a real mess in LA. Seems like I get 3G access along several freeways, but whenever I reach a destination I'm back to good ole Edge.
Hey Cingy, I don't need access when I'm moving! I need it at my destination!
I drove to a friend's in Chandler, AZ (suburb of Phoenix). They've got Cingular 3G over there that really works like it's supposed to. Had a solid 3G signal all the way from Phoenix area to the suburb, and was able to use it at their place. It's very very nice.

Re: 3G has to be deployed first...AZ has it solid from Phoenix to Tucson... Texas has all of its major cities covered Florida has a lot of coverage. L.A. is one of those cities that Cingular/AT&T just doesn't really care to compete in.

Re: No Coverage....Cingular sure does like to make lots of claims. Visiting their website, the biggest thing I see is "Fewest dropped calls of any network". No asterisk or anything. I'm willing to bet Centennial's tiny network has less dropped calls, along with the other carriers that have been proven to have fewer dropped calls. Watching the video on the frontpage, it's also the most "advanced and secure" network, too. They haven't even got it in Lansing here, yet. Just the Detroit metro area (which is more than I can say when I had the service). AT&T fails at wireless data. Sprint wins. Verizon sits back and says they could win, but won't run the whole race.

Same obstacles come with this as do with the reason thousands can not get FIOS. . . They have the same network deployment strategy.

Great.....Great.... So AT&T's FTTP service will be slower then their wireless service.

Re: Great.....Yeah, AT&T DSL = 768kbps to 6Mbps, AT&T Wireless = 7.2 Mbps Of course, since they like to have their cake and eat it too, you won't be able to do much other than light email with the Wireless or risk cancellation due to TOS.

Re: Here is some Pic of the NEw SIM cardI heard it was live in Lancaster, but when I drove along the 138, all I got was Es. Must be the northern part of palmdale. Sounds like more spotty coverage.
Apparently it's up in Bakersfield too. WTG Cingular!

Yay!So does that mean I can expect 300ms latency in less cities than I can expect crappy bonded-pair U-Verse?
People keep touting the greatness of HSDPA vs. EVDO but out of the thousands of colleagues I passed HSDPA Blackberry's to vs the EVDO ones, guess which ones were the slowest? Guess which one dropped calls, guess which ones generated the most support calls? It wasn't the EVDO folks.
We were an American Group, that happens be International ... in case you were wondering.

Not in my backyardis the reason for the gaps in service. People fight tooth and nail to not have new towers, upgrading towers, etc.

Re: Not in my backyardsaid by ninjatutle:is the reason for the gaps in service. People fight tooth and nail to not have new towers, upgrading towers, etc. I see towers everywhere. We are the #1 cell phone state and HSPDA is such a joke here. When you call 1-800-Help-Me-Cingular ... you get a call center located in Greensboro. BTW, the average rep you're talking to makes $50k a year. So lol, Midwest ... they probably make more than you. The rest of you folks on this site who think you're so smart ... keep that in mind.

Re: Not in my backyard!!!! $50K a year, I hope you dont mean the call center reps, I used to be one and made $19K a year, and thats Canadian. Yes thats right Cigular uses outsourced reps. $50K a year I wish I made that, it would be sweet

CingularI like Cingular's HSDPA service just fine. No major problems nor dropped calls - which is certainly area dependent. I'd say something to derail EVDO's popularity, but I just don't have the stomach amongst the fanboy crowd, here. Nope, not Verizon. It's Cingular - tethered to an 8525.
