'In close talks' about bundling Fon software
(old news - 09:03AM Tuesday Apr 03 2007)
tags: business · wireless · alternatives
There's several problems with Fon's (the Wi-Fi "revolutionaries") business model, including the fact that users are buying their routers then flashing the firmware, but also the fact that reselling residential bandwidth is against most ISP's terms of service. Still, Fon's been pushing deals with Neuf of France and British Telecom to help gain some legitimacy, and Om Malik now notes that the company is "in close talks" with Time Warner Cable. The report notes that Fon has grabbed more funding from Excite Japan.

flashing firmware

I hear this everytime br mentions fon. I have a fon and can't really think of why I would want to flash it. I can make it do whatever I want, including not let other people on it.

Re: flashing firmware

a few friends of mine have a channel #fonners on irc.bsodirc.org they put ddwrt on the fon routers and are working on putting sd cards in them for more memory. Ive seen one of these hacked fon routers in action and they are nice they are great for war driving but so far everyone i know in the community still runs the fon software so i really dont see where it hurts the project. It does the same thing it was made for and a whole lot more

Re: flashing firmware

oh, guess that figures. I'm usually happy as long as my Wii can access the internet and my macbook can find it around the house.

Time Warner's Compensation

If this is true, which I'm skeptical, I wonder what Time Warner's compensation from Fon will be? Filling in their quad-play portfolio seems to be weak reason to me. I'm sure TW isn't doing this out of kindness for their customers.

if it is

illegal to re-sell bandwith from your isp, could fon change the wording where you are paying "rent" for using the wireless hookup? guess I'm not a lawyer.
