For new U-Verse & satellite TV customers
(old news - 12:30PM Tuesday Apr 03 2007)
tags: dsl · business · telco · TVIP · HDTV
AT&T today announced that new U-Verse customers will get free high definition content for one year if they sign up for AT&T's VDSL IPTV service. Obviously, that would be more interesting if the service was deployed in more than just portions of fifteen markets -- to that end the company says they're also offering the deal to customers who order satellite TV through AT&T. The company also says they've expanded U-Verse further into the Dallas & Fort Worth area. As always, head to our U-Verse forum to get user impressions of the service and to have questions answered.

You can also get it free OTA. But not everyone wants a mini oil rig outside their homes, holmes.

Here the Cable Co charges extra for it, and they only have a few channels. OTA for me, no go, I am shadowed and need a tower of at least 250' to even think of getting it OTA.

Mini oil rig? You must be really out in the boonies. My neighbor uses a normal TV antenna for his HDTV. That is the only reason he keeps it in shape, or so he said when I asked why he had that and the dish.

Re: funny, I get HD free all the time from Cox

I'm in a canyon, sort of. I tried with regular antennas but they don't pick up jack.

I would need something like whats shown in the photos to get the OTA HD's.

Plus, I don't think the cable co's are giving away A&E HD, ESPN HD, TNT HD, HBO HD, etc for free in their regular programing unless you subscribe to the HD packages.

Your neighbors can't say diddly. The FCC says you are allowed to mount an antenna onto a tall mast to receive the signal, as long as you have an exclusive use area and can get safety permits (required if over 12 feet tall).

They could put some dead birds along the base and alert the EPA saying the mast is a hazard to wildlife.

Odd, I have an antenna up 30 feet, my neighbor's TV antenna is up about 35 feet, a guy down the street has a ham antenna up 60 feet, no permits needed. Now if we put up a tower like the one in the picture, then that is another issue. (of course, the guy with the 60 foot high antenna just happens to be the chairman of the CC&R committee and currently the only 'active' member). Just to balance out things, a guy I know with a 180 foot tower had to get permits on his 1 acre lot, but that is another tale.

.. and other than the rental of the equipment (which is a valid charge) comcast gives it away for free with in each level of service..

I guess AT&T, and some others, still view HD as premium content. Sad..

HD is the next step.. it's not HBO.. it's not PPV.. it's not premium.. it's just the same old stuff in the resolution it should be.

It's sad that providers are trying to cash in on HD signals... because that's all they are... signals.

Curious...

I wonder how good the service will actual be. Will it be as reliable as cable TV? As long as its not satellite, I have never seen a show on satellite that does not pixel ate at least once during the program or just cut all together. I am curious to the level of quality compared to the proven cable system.

Re: Curious...

My DVB-T local channel HD has been rock solid since I put my antenna up over a year ago, with 2 exceptions. Since I live approximately 50 miles from the broadcasting antennas, and I have a fairly small antenna (»tinyurl.com/2pftdx), reception on Channel 8 ABC hardly ever works, and KDFI 27 works when they are not broadcasting on half signal strength. The rest of the "big" local channels has no pixelisations, and are crystal clear on my 37" LCD-HDTV. Are planning to try with a better amplifier to get ABC.

This is exactly why I left DirecTV (and Dish Network). They offer great deals for new customers but screw the current (faithful) faithful customers. You're stuck in contracts that they know will be a hassle to get out of. This is the main reason why I switched to Brighthouse and I don't look back.

Re: New customers only

Not to mention the $150 upgrade fee, if you want a dvr and the $6 a month fee for the lease of the receiver.

Granted they do offer a rebate that essentialy makes the receiver free after a 10 month credit.

$20 for the crappy hd that they offer is a joke.

OTA is great, for me at least, I get it from a cheap RS indoor antenna, I'm about 15-20 miles from the towers.

yikes!!

I sure hope that their new franchise non-agreements for internet and cable content, combined with their satellite and telephone will result in "more competition" and lower prices for everyone forever...or perhapse, they will just drive everyone else out of business and sit in AT&T's most comfortable position, as a monopoly.

The problem is you'll always have people that LOVE DirecTv, me included, and you'll always have someone (who is obviosuly right) that's against DTV. You can't please everyone all of the time.

I don't have the money right now to upgrade everything I own to HDTV. So that doesn't really mean much to me yet. Eventually when I need to upgrade to be able to watch TV, then I will.

I don't know about Dish's problems, because I never had any thougths of using them, not do I personally know anyone that has one. I know DTV and SBC used to be combined as a package. What ever happened there? money?

Re: BAH

but REALISTICALLY lets look at time warner CABLE tv over DirecTv & WHY i choose DirecTv
side by side,also FOR ME,I have all the
TOTAL CHOICE PLUS Monthly
HBO and STARZ Monthly
HD Access Monthly
DIRECTV Protection Plan Advanced Product

AFTER you get both set up & running,with all your programs,
notice
1st DIRECTV programing guide
you can EDIT the guide,so that you ONLY see the programs, that you are paying for or have.
=============================================
time warner, YOU vannot edit their program guide,
oh yes TW has a "favorite list" on a 2ndary channel, but not on the main guide,YOU MUST look through every channel offered by TW to find the channels your interested in.
========================================================
DIRECTV,YOU OWN the equipment
TW you never own the equipment
so if you move to another city or state, you can still get DIRECTV.
================================================
most apt complex's,(where the majority of TW customers are from) try to tell their renters, YOU CANNOT have nor will we allow you to attach the dish to our propertyfine,
Congress DID pass a law that specificially says,that if cable tv is allowed on a rental property, that a satallite dish be allowed on the property also, and it dosen't have to be attached to any part of the property, my big HD oval dish isn't attached anywhere on the property.
===================================================
TW raise's prices & you har it in the news all the time CABLETV THEFT,
when the last time you heard of someone STEALING tv signals from a anyone?
============================================
in closing yes i really enjoy DIRECTV, in fact when the tech installed my Directv system,
he used a 10 foot steel pole,he used a MANUAL pole digger,poured in 20 lbs of cement,(came back next day) covered the hole back up with grass & dirt,(nice & neat) then attached my system,then when I upgraded & attached the HD dish to that same pole,so it is secure,

Re: BAH

Direct and Dish both lease the equipment to you now. So you don't own anything and if you do from before they started this scam then they will still ask for the equipment YOU purchased when you try to upgrade something.

My buddy just dealt with this when he wanted to upgrade to a new HD DVR with Direct. They insisted he give them the Toshiba HD receiver he purchased 3 years ago for $500 or they would make him pay the full price for the HD DVR instead of the "discounted" lease fee.

Also the law has nothing to do with whether or not cable is somewhere. No place (association, apartment owner, etc) can restrict your ability to get dish provided you can safely get reception by staying with 20' of the roofline and do not need to make permanent changes to the structure (drill holes, etc). Historical sites can file for an exemption, but they have to show why they should be exempt and get the FCC's approval.

1st of all to correct you,on a few things,TW,and i won't let this start into an argument, but for others
IF it is as you suggest then WHY when i upgraded to HD & the H20 box, & asked DIRECTV should i sent you the old H10 box,no its you bought it after 2 yrs of service,along with the directv dish,

2nd WHY when i signed up with DirecTV & decided to go with the HD H20 box & the big Oval Dish-10/2005,was told/reminded in 2/2007,after Nov 2007 the equipment belongs to you.
suggests "your so called buddy" call Directv at there 800 #,and he may find out that after a year contract he infact owns the equipment,DIRECTV does NOT rent out home satallight dish's you sign a contract for a year.
TW is the company that "rents you the box".

Lastly suggest that you read the
US CODE: Title 47,553.about cable theft, reception & especially equipment.

ther are probally serveral million apt/home owners that will argue with you & show you that that you are WRONG,about renting/owning directv equipment »www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/co···d=900036

JUST got off phone with DIRECTV

and also i sent them the following email,
hello Directv,
have a man trying to convince others,Time Warner cable vs DIRECTV-
his argument is,,
Direct and Dish both lease the equipment to you now. So you don't own anything and if you do from

before they started this scam then they will still ask for the equipment YOU purchased when you try to upgrade something.My buddy just dealt with this when he wanted to upgrade to a new HD DVR with Direct. They insisted he give them the Toshiba HD receiver he purchased 3 years ago for $500 or they would make him pay the full price for the HD DVR instead of the "discounted" lease fee.""
=======================================
SO MY Question is
1,DO I OWN my HD H20 BOX AFTER MY 2 YR CONTRACT EXPIRES IN NOV/DEC 2007,
========================================
reply to email ,
yes that is why we have EVERY CUSTOMER sign a 1 or 2 yr commitment.After that commitment you own the euipment.in your case after Nov 2007 you own all the equipment
================================================
I also gave them your argument,
My buddy just dealt with this when he wanted to upgrade to a new HD DVR with Direct. They insisted he give them the Toshiba HD receiver he purchased 3 years ago for $500 or they would make him pay the full price for the HD DVR instead of the "discounted" lease fee

reply was the yes you can BUY the dvr from us for $$399.00 or the HD DVR $749.00 OR YOU CAN lease it for $99.00 a month,
but and say IF someone didn't want to buy our equitment out right, then they could as you are doing buy our HD DVR over a 2 yr commitment..

suggest again that you have "your buddy" call directv 800 #

Re: JUST got off phone with DIRECTV

Even with all that marketing bull. The fact is that it is satellite technology...LOL. Even the Verizon's of the world will dominate the satellite tv (just a matter of a short time). Not to mention the Cable Co's, The satellite industry is breathing its last breath with the NFL contract. For Directv to succeed they must compete on other services like phone and internet not to mention the cell phone (got to have a partner). So in my opinion, "satellite companies are just capturing a niche in the market.

Re: JUST got off phone with DIRECTV

Their last breath you say? Hardly. You cable only Fans really wish that Sat was on it's last breath. Satallite is cheaper (in most cases) than Cable. And come times you get as many or more channels (of useless crap) to watch, for that lower price.

Sats and Cables have their own respective uses and users, but really, Cable only people need to stop trying to convince Sat owners that they are using the wrong services to get their channels to them.

Re: JUST got off phone with DIRECTV

Its all about cost, in the future the overhead to run a IPTV, cable co, etc....will be much lower than satellite overhead. Think about it! Here is the kicker...you can do more over that line (HD-TV) than any satellite signal (of course right now). Of course some crazy technology could come around and total revamp the industry (satellite), but by that time being cheaper than other forms of media, doubtful. Satellite offers a great service now (granted good signal). THE COST WILL TAKE THEM DOWN! To much for not enough.

Re: BAH

Well, first off I am speaking 3rd person in my buddy's situation as I did not take part in their conversation. However, I just called DirecTV and asked myself (at your advice) what it means to pay their "lease fees" for their equipment and was told that at the end of my service the equipment is to be sent back to them.

I then asked, "Does it matter if I have it for 1 year or 5 years?" and was told, "No, once the service is cancelled we will ship you a box so you can return the equipment to us."

Also, just 2 weeks ago I downgraded my Dish service to get rid of 2 HD TV's and guess what... I have a box sitting in my living room right now that is waiting to be packed with their HD receivers so I can ship it back to them.

And here let me correct you some more and this is cut and pasted directly from DirecTV's website:

SYSTEM LEASE: Purchase of 12 consecutive months (24 months for advanced receivers) of any DIRECTV base programming ($29.99/mo. or above) or qualifying international services bundle required. DVR service commitment ($5.99/mo.) required for DVR and HD DVR lease; HD Access fee ($9.99/mo.) required for HD and HD DVR lease. FAILURE TO ACTIVATE ALL DIRECTV SYSTEM EQUIPMENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE EQUIPMENT LEASE ADDENDUM MAY RESULT IN A CHARGE OF $150 PER RECEIVER NOT ACTIVATED. IF YOU FAIL TO MAINTAIN YOUR PROGRAMMING COMMITMENT, DIRECTV MAY CHARGE A PRORATED FEE OF UP TO $300. RECEIVERS ARE AT ALL TIMES PROPERTY OF DIRECTV AND MUST BE RETURNED UPON CANCELLATION OF SERVICE OR ADDITIONAL FEES MAY APPLY. VISIT directv.com OR CALL 1-800-DIRECTV FOR DETAILS.

Re: BAH

but also, the bad part of Directv as i found/ cked out so MY FRIENDS know in advance, is that IF you want to get internet by Directv be aware that,
(1) Your going to pay a higher price,(higher then swbell/SBC/ATT higher then RoadRunner,ect)
(2) If cloudy weather,or heavy rain,your going to loose your signal,which mean you loose your connection to the internet.
========================================
Cable television still reigns supreme in terms of market share, but DirecTV has put satellite broadcasting on the pay-TV map.
There are over 100 million television-viewing households, and the beauty of satellite is that we have instant reach into all of those markets and households," says Terry Ferguson, vice president of business development and strategic planning at DirecTV.

DirecTV's 10-million-customer base has made the No. 1 satellite TV provider the belle of the acquisitions ball. News Corp.'s long-standing offer to acquire DirecTV parent Hughes Electronics was turned on its head in late May, when Charlie Ergen, EchoStar Communications' brash chairman, said he was in deep negotiations with financial backers and intended to make an offer for his company's larger, chief competitor.

The merger waters were further confused when Hughes Chairman Michael Smith, who favored a link-up with EchoStar, abruptly retired.
