Some AV apps won't launch, some PCs won't boot...
(old news - 12:47PM Wednesday Apr 04 2007)
tags: security · software
Users in our Security forum note that the latest critical Microsoft Windows update (KB925902) is causing all kinds of problems. Most notably, it prevents some users from loading anti-virus software, but others say the update prevented them from booting entirely. "So far, we have errors with AVG, Realtec, F-Secure, a false positive of a Trojan, a messed up Vaio, USB problems and Accessories and Utilities all vanishing into thin air," says one security forum regular.

Re: CAD Software

My webcam didn't work after installing the update and rebooting. Rebooted again and all is well. None of my other PC's had any incidence of trouble.

Do you use the AutoCAD suite? was it affected?

I'm only asking because one of my client's uses it on Vista and he already had to use a hack to get it to run within Vista. Poor guy... Poor Vista clients!

EDIT: am I confused here? is it XP or Vista that is affected?

I am also getting an "illegal System DLL Relocation" error after installing this freaking patch! Damn you Bill....

EDIT: I solved the problem by uninstalling the patch. All is well now.

I had no problem installing the recent Microsoft patch.

The only thing that happened was Microsoft Vista forced a shut down of my computer without being prompted to do so.

I do not believe that this should be a "usual" problem for people. I've already had to deal with this myself this morning. Not fun. In some cases, it was resolved with a patched driver for audio...

In any case, I doubt this would've been "news worthy" if it weren't truly causing so much trouble.

I also had no problem with the patch, and am an AVG user. Although I pay for the professional version.

Normally I'd say that because of the amount of configurations that are out there a few problems are unavoidable. However, I think this was the patch for the animated cursor issue. How is it possible to dork things like Autocad or antivirus software when patching this type of function? Sloppy.

On the 18th of April you will have the choice of using Avira on your Vista machines instead if you want it. Also free at www.freeav.com

On XP, I always use it and never have problems. It is also easy on the resources as it's only an antivirus and nothing else added. Windows firewall is just fine for me.

What's really odd, most of the time the "exploit" doesn't affect me, and the patch almost never causes problems either.

Re: Yay for me

Yep, I've got to agree. In the almost 2 decades that I've been computing, I've never been infected with a virus, never had my system compromised, never been the victim of an exploit and never had a problem with the updates. No, I'm not living in a bubble either, I work for an ISP so I'm on the net a tremendous amount of time visiting a myriad of web sites, both from home and work. Well, this update did dick with my webcam until I rebooted then it was fine and dandy but other than that, nothing.

Well join the club, I have Windows 2000 and most of my apps I use often are working normally as well, I guess it depends on a few measures of some apps, but I guess our systems are maybe just different if that seems like a good answer?

prevents some users from loading anti-virus software

Check out this forum regarding the ongoing problem with KB925902 update

I have not seen any major issue reported about the update so it most be isolated to certain software configuration. Usual, if their was a major problem with the Microsoft update, I would see a lot of news articles about the subject in my in-box.

Nothing else to report, but that could change.

Dang...

Normally I wait a few days when ever MS sends out their critical updates. Usually cause I dont feel like restarting my computer.

But last night I was shutting down to do some maintenence and abescentmindedly pressed enter at the shutdown screen when selected was the "Install updates and shutdown" (since I disabled autoinstall).

So we shall see if I have a computer when I get back after work/class.

I installed the update last night.
After reboot I got an error about an OCX file being incorrect and to contact the vendor.
Did a Google search and the file was part of ActiveX so the vendor was MS.
Tried a different tack, went into Add/remove programs, showed all updates and clicked on the link to the MS Security Bulletin for the update.
It mentioned exactly the error I was seeing and mentioned there was a known issue with systems with Realtek drivers.
I have an HP Pavilion with just that setup.
Clicked on the link in the security bulletin to get another download to fix the problem.
Downloaded that file and rebooted.
Problem solved.

Re: Dang...

I can confirm your experience. I had the same OCX error message on my Sony Vaio VGN-TXN15 after applying the patch. It has RealTek HD audio and the control panel functionality was lost. No big deal, but the average who receives that error may panic.

Then again, I can also confirm that RealTek's drivers suck dodo eggs. I cannot understand how it is they can even release them as unstable as they are.

My other two workstations had no issues that I'm currently aware of. But based on the experience with the laptop, I wouldn't be at all surprised if some other piece of software fails. I think MS will have to fix their fix.

After installing the latest windows updates 2 days ago, my p5b-e refused to boot. It looked to be a corrupted bios, and since the p5b-e doesn't have a removable bios chip, I had to send it back to asus).

Probably should have included this originally:
After installing the updates, I went outside for approx 2 hours, so rebooting a few hundred times is likely to cause problems.

And you would know this how?

What about all the people who don't post here and just let WU download and install patches automatically, and now have no idea why they are getting the dll error or why their PC won't boot up?

Just going by the number of problems posted on the forums here alone, it doesn't look like it's "isolated" at all.
