| They don't sound too concerned. . . "Rogers will be speaking to the sales company to explain the proper way to dispose of personal information,"
Uh, OK? And? It almost sounds like an attempt to sell customer information by an employee of the sales company went "awry". I'd think this would be approached with a little more concern than explaining how to properly dispose of records. -- Wishes: When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true. | ! Sounds to me that they where not trying to dispose anything and more of a attempt to steal consumer information and someone dumped the crap into the parking lot.
Why do I say this? Because my moms purse was stolen from her car in front of her very eyes and was later found by a few good people not to far from where we live scattered across a parking lot and brought her drivers license and credit cards, when we arrived at that location I scanned the area and found more of her credit cards scattered between the bushes.
She reported all her cards stolen and made a police report about the incident. Rogers has more on their hands than just "dumping consumer data". The PR bullshit is not fooling me. -- The only limits we have are the one's we set ourselves.

| Re: Social Security info... not in Canada Yeah.. I wish it wasn't used for anything not gov't related. Unfortunately, almost every 'service' here in the U.S. uses it (phone, cable/satellite, Banks, credit cards, loans, credit reports (duh!), military, etc.)
The sad part is that it contains less numbers as your phone, requires no 'real' identification, and can be used fraudulenty against you.

| SSN you can thank the credit bureaus for the SSN requirement. all your credit records they sell to subscibers are geared to the SSN. until congress gets serious about the proper uses for social security numbers, these problems will continue. I don't give my SSN to anyone except the IRS and state revenue (tax filing). | |

| Re: Even the police want it The police can get it when they run your driving record. In fact, in Ohio (and I'm sure other states) you are required to provide your Social Security number when applying for drivers' license by providing either your Social Security card when applying/renewing your license or showing proof to not having an Social Security number. To the states, it's the universal identifer because if you apply for a drivers' license in another state, the first thing they do is query the national motor vehicle database to see if a license has been issued to you in an another state. They also query the Social Security administration to make sure the name and number match. | |
