Wi-Fi iPod This Year
Possibly in the third quarter
Digitimes (via Gizmodo) is reporting that Apple is planning to release a Wi-Fi–enabled iPod by the end of the year. The report says that Universal Scientific Industrial (USI) has been contracted by the Cupertino-based iPod maker to produce the Wi-Fi modules and that Foxconn will act as the OEM system assembler. Apple Insider pegs the general time frame for release as somewhere around the third quarter.

Over priced? It's worth whatever someone will pay for it.

I'd personally LOVE a 16GB Nano with WiFi syncing. Don't care about being able to purchase stuff from iTMS over WiFi, just be able to sync.

At any rate, this is no shock, and WiFi is coming to the iPod. Sooner rather than later.

Especially after the Zune came out with a WiFi component.

I'm kind of surprised it's taken this long.

More like waiting so they can resell the thing to currant iPod owners.

No idea why people will keep buying iPod for small upgrades. I will not get one cause of this small update shit they do.

Unfortunately, any vendor that can get away with it, will do the same thing.

Re: Boo Ya

Your right I'm not going to single out iPod. They all do it. I mean Zen 2 is coming out already. I was just talking about the subject of iPod when I said that.

I just want a MP# player that plays music and shows the stuff your playing on the screen. I was going to get a 2GB RCA one last week but got a graphics card.

The fun part about the MP3 players is you have the choice of two storage technologies, both of which are flawed:
  • micro-drive (hard disk) based storage
  • flash memory based storage

Hard drives really are not designed to put up with the G-shocks of a very portable device. Thus, they tend to have short lifetimes - even shorter than one would expect from a laptop.

Flash-media has a finite lifetime, as well. If you are the type of person that is constantly changing the song-load on your flash-based MP3-player, you eventually exhaust the rewritability of the media.

Then again, the batteries will usually die before you ever reach either of those limits. Overall, I think the constant release stream for incremental feature sets is designed to get you to replace your MP3 player before you realize just how disposable they are.

Re: Boo Ya

I've yet to own a MP3 player myself. I don't need one that plays video and all that BS. Damn if I would want to watch something on them tiny screens.

If I were going to get one like that the zen seems cool plays allot of video formats too.

Just avoid the Zune. As horrible as the iPod's iTunes software is, the Zune software manages to be even worse. The Zune software can take a formerly stable XP system and make it crashy. The iPod software you can at least avoid by using the scads of third-party replacements. What's more, there are options for other than just Windows for managing your music library if you go iPod vs. Zune.

I think Apple will have an actual REAL use for the wi-fi feature i.e. wi-fi download of music as opposed to the lame and tired use that Microsoft has for their wi-fi feature.

Re: Throw in

I just want my damn ipod nano to sync wirelessly cause it is a total pain in the ass taking it from the car into the apartment and then remembering (that is the key) to take it with you the next time you use your car. Granted my wireless connection might not make it that far.

Re: bahhhhhh

Its like anything tech though, there is always something better in the new model. I'm real happy with my nano though, I'm glad I bought when I did because I've gotten good use out of it at the gym, my workouts are much better now
Same with the iphone, I'll bet the 2nd one they release will be much better then the first, they will have lots of feedback to build the next. I give apple credit though, they seem to have really good knowledge on what people like.
