| What happened ? Did at&t finally see the light so to speak ? This is great , means bandwidth costs will continue to fall.
Next maybe they can buy some of the dark fiber and light that with their old equipment. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!"

Next maybe they can buy some of the dark fiber and light that with their old equipment. I always love when people talk about "lighting dark fibre". There's this perception that there's this massive excess of unused, usable fibre out there. While it's true that there's a lot of dormant fibre out there, what percentage of it is actually immediately usable is unknown.
All you have to do is watch the news and see how often the already lit fibre gets cut by some git with a backhoe. People notice when lit fibre gets cut because, well, it's in use. It's immediately evident that the line has been cut.
Dark fibre, on the other hand... Well, it's a lot less noticeable if it's gotten cut, damaged or has otherwise degraded. Maintenance to it is generally only going to happen in cases where parallel lit fibre has been degraded. -- Everyday, thousands of new cars are delivered to their new owners with poorly-selected radio station presets.

| Re: What happened ? ok , but you really don't see the forest for the trees.
If they lit the dark fiber with OLD equipment it provides REDUNDANCY for next to NOTHING. The investment was already made in the equipment. Plus just maybe they could then have another option later on when capcity is soaked up with this new fangled thing called the interweb.
Now with hat being said, realize i have worked with at&t and repairing fiber is 1 / 10th the cost of getting the right of way and paying to actually lay the fiber. If the cable was cut by some hick with a back hoe who cares ? It can be repaired for cheaper then using other peoples pop's. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!"

Agreed figuring if they have to spend money which the investors are pissing and moaning about the prices will increase, or there will be a secret "Charge" in the bill to cover this upgrade. -- Team Discovery-Join the fight

So here, because Light Reading fails to include one:

| Re: Switch to Cisco probably out of necessity... exactly, they had i think 10 core customers going into 2006, i believe at&t was the last.
their routers were very good products , they just never really took off. and I never figured out why.
I got to play with 2 in my life and I was impressed by them. hmm sometimes good products don't get a foot hold and die. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!"

| Re: Switch to Cisco probably out of necessity... One thing to consider here is that AT&T is Cisco's largest single customer. AT&T & Cisco also have a relatively long history. Cisco Products are also at the core of AT&T's Frame Relay & ATM Networks (Stratacom) as well as almost every Managed Internet Router that AT&T deploys for their customers. They also resell Cisco products. I think they ended up with a pretty good deal. | |

Surprised they waited this long to upgrade from OC-192 (10 Gbps) backplane. Sprint, Verio/NTT upgraded their networks to OC-768 a few years back I think.
