Gear will replace former Avici hardware
(old news - 09:31AM Monday Apr 23 2007)
tags: business · bandwidth · telco · networking
AT&T has selected the Cisco CRS-1 router to replace much of the core network gear previously provided by hardware vendor Avici. Simon Zelingher, VP of AT&T Research Labs, recently stated his company will need to upgrade to a 100-Gbit/s backbone by the end of the decade in order to keep up with bandwidth demand driven by video and multimedia applications. As we recently noted, AT&T quadrupled capacity by moving to one global OC-768 (40 Gbit/s) core, but that bandwidth is being eaten up more quickly than the telco expected.

What happened ?

Did at&t finally see the light so to speak ? This is great , means bandwidth costs will continue to fall.

Next maybe they can buy some of the dark fiber and light that with their old equipment.

I always love when people talk about "lighting dark fibre". There's this perception that there's this massive excess of unused, usable fibre out there. While it's true that there's a lot of dormant fibre out there, what percentage of it is actually immediately usable is unknown.

All you have to do is watch the news and see how often the already lit fibre gets cut by some git with a backhoe. People notice when lit fibre gets cut because, well, it's in use. It's immediately evident that the line has been cut.

Dark fibre, on the other hand... Well, it's a lot less noticeable if it's gotten cut, damaged or has otherwise degraded. Maintenance to it is generally only going to happen in cases where parallel lit fibre has been degraded.

Re: What happened ?

ok , but you really don't see the forest for the trees.

If they lit the dark fiber with OLD equipment it provides REDUNDANCY for next to NOTHING. The investment was already made in the equipment. Plus just maybe they could then have another option later on when capcity is soaked up with this new fangled thing called the interweb.

Now with hat being said, realize i have worked with at&t and repairing fiber is 1 / 10th the cost of getting the right of way and paying to actually lay the fiber. If the cable was cut by some hick with a back hoe who cares ? It can be repaired for cheaper then using other peoples pop's.

I am not so sure that when the phone company spends more money they drop prices.

Agreed figuring if they have to spend money which the investors are pissing and moaning about the prices will increase, or there will be a secret "Charge" in the bill to cover this upgrade.

What no pics?

When I click on the link for the Cisco CRS-1 router, I expect to see a picture of it with some more details.

So here, because Light Reading fails to include one:

Switch to Cisco probably out of necessity...

Since Avici pulled out of the core router business last week.

It's hard to stay in the biz when your only customer switches to another vendor!

Uh, no...They're dropping the core routing line because Cisco and Juniper own the lion's share of those markets.

Re: Switch to Cisco probably out of necessity...

exactly, they had i think 10 core customers going into 2006, i believe at&t was the last.

their routers were very good products , they just never really took off. and I never figured out why.

I got to play with 2 in my life and I was impressed by them.
hmm sometimes good products don't get a foot hold and die.

Yeah, I was wondering why they did not got with Juniper. Juniper's are nominally around 50% the cost of Cisco on a per port basis. Plus they don't have as many nickel & dimes costs as Cisco (or Nortel) does.

Re: Switch to Cisco probably out of necessity...

One thing to consider here is that AT&T is Cisco's largest single customer. AT&T & Cisco also have a relatively long history. Cisco Products are also at the core of AT&T's Frame Relay & ATM Networks (Stratacom) as well as almost every Managed Internet Router that AT&T deploys for their customers. They also resell Cisco products. I think they ended up with a pretty good deal.

One thing to note:

Avici's second largest customer was ENRON.

I want one.....

If I can have one of these installed in my house please. That would be greaaaaat. How fast exactly is an OC-768? Our school district has installed an OC-3, which is pretty dang fast, I would even go for that in my house. Soon. Very soon.

Re: I want one.....

One Oc-3 is approx 155M, but there is overhead so the SPE (Sonet Payload Envelope) or your data is only 140 so doing the math in M returns a line speed (NOT DATA THROUGHPUT) of 39813M. Pretty dang fast!

OC-768 = 40 Gbps

Surprised they waited this long to upgrade from OC-192 (10 Gbps) backplane. Sprint, Verio/NTT upgraded their networks to OC-768 a few years back I think.

Re: I want one.....

There talking about upgrading to 100Gbps not 40 with this platform. Most of there backbone happens to be running at 40gigs already.
