story category RIAA: DRM Is 'Pro-Consumer'
Just don't ask them for any concrete examples
(old news - 02:21PM Thursday Apr 26 2007)
tags: legal · Fileswapping · business · consumers
Back in February, DRM maker Macrovision, in response to Steve Jobs' DRM missive, tried to argue that DRM "increases consumer value." Now the RIAA's Mitch Bainwol this week informs us that "DRM serves all sorts of pro-consumer purposes," though he fails to name even one valid example. As Techdirt observes, people seem to think if you repeat something frequently enough, it magically becomes true.

Re: Rrrrrrrrright

It'd be much better if they had a green leprechaun pushing DRM. Maybe then I'd buy into it!

No wait, on second thought I'd need Captain Crunch.

Is it that they think were that stupid or is it that they are that stupid?

I am going with the latter.

They've gotten away with it for *how* long?

Clearly, they think the answer is "yes". Can't blame them for business as usual, but the folks that know better can certainly get a good laugh at it.

It's Their Right...

In their universe, entertainment is mandatory, must be purchased from them, and any time someone thinks of a new way to use one of their products (or the underlying media wears out), they are entitled to be paid over and over...

The world is flat!

Does the RIAA's Mitch Bainwol also believe the world is flat?

Considering some of the people they've sued, I thought that the RIAA's world was a little girl's nightmare.

There was that whole "Wicked Witch of the West" nightmare ... isn't the RIAA based in California?

I tell you what....

if they want to "license" music that way.... I'll be asking them to provide me with a new CD every time one "wears out" or stops working.... because after all, they think we payed to listen to the music, not to "buy the media it's on".

Maybe it's "pro-consumer" like a logo....

Maybe the RIAA is thinking songs are like Chanel bags--as in the bulk of the value to the consumer is to be able to wave it around and essentially shout, "I've got one and you don't!"

With that approach, the RIAA has missed my reason for acquiring music, but then I don't have white ear-buds, either.

trying to play Devil's Advocate, I can't even think of one reason why DRM is good or beneficial

I mean, it's not like they let you take your old Records/cassettes in to exchange straight up for CD's or DVD's, or whatever new media format comes out

If pressed they'd weakly argue that DRM helps keep music prices low, because without it there would be rampant piracy which would force them to charge more. Nevermind that it's a vicous cycle, the more they charge the more people will pirate, leading to a lower average price per song as more and more are obtained for free.

At Macrovision we are willing to lead this industry effort.

Well of course you will. How kind of you to offer to lead the way and make boatloads of money in the process no doubt.

Same old song and dance.

I would like that cd and please hold the DRM.

Re: At Macrovision we are willing to lead this industry effort.

From experience, anything that Macrovision says is a lie. They have a culture of liars and crooks. That tends to be the case when your entire business model is based on taking away rights of others. When you look up the definition of evil, you will find www.macrovision.com

It is true

DRM generates more consumers since you have to buy a new copy for each device that you want to use to play your media. That increases consumer value, also know as more consumers equals more money, to the companies with DRM protected content.

@mindspring.com

consume this

Dear fracktards, I do not eat music. I do not "consume" intangible things. I do not "consume" anything other than biomass, through which I survive.

Give up the whole push for calling CUSTOMERS such a flaccid thing as "consumers" of a product. We do not care for such terminology.

Here's a concrete example: Digital RESTRICTIONS Mish-mash is pro crap, it is NOT what's 'good' for CUSTOMERS.

Here's another concrete example: eMusic is hugely successful without ANY form of Digitized Restrictions Market-speak, without huge marketing, without huge label support. Grow up.
