New marketing while we watch our shows
(old news - 11:34AM Sunday Apr 29 2007)
tags: Video · business
We know that ad-supported Internet television service Joost has been signing deals left and right regarding content, but now we are learning more about the advertising deals the company has been at work on. Over thirty big names are supporting the project with ads, names which include groups from Taco Bell to the U.S. Army. So, we’ll be seeing free TV online with commercial breaks just like regular TV, right? Not exactly. While some of these big advertisers will be using their three-month trial with Joost to share normal advertising, many will take advantage of the greater options for interaction using “hand-raiser” ads which run throughout the shows.

Hand raiser ads?

I can see someone clicking on a boring show, but on a good show? During the chase scene? Sorry, not for me. It is bad enough you get commercial breaks that sometimes cut out parts of the movie. Too bad they can not put the commercials back as part of the show like they did in the 40's. Hmmm..but that means you lose your potty break, kitchen break, homework break times.

Needs.

Joost needs to load its videos without pausing first. ....and some clips dont even play....they will probably end up merging with Microsoft......

better content please

They need to focus on content before more advertising.

Yeah joost is sucking right now

Well i am a beta tester but after the first two days the coolness wore off and the content sucks so much i say more content b4 advertising. Nice idea but the implementation sucks ass i will watch an ad but only if the show im watching is worth it.

Re: Yeah joost is sucking right now

I agree, the concept is interesting, but their content is rather static and lacking in quality. Many channels that were introduced a few months ago has the same (and some even less) content then they had in the past.

Any issues other than "Lacking Content"?

I wouldn't disparage on content too much until it is at least out of the Closed Beta stage. The concept isn't all that new or original, but I'm very glad somebody is attempting it.

Now if I can only get into the closed Beta to check it out for myself...

Joost is a joke!

I was a beta tester as well. Crappy content, did not play that well and the software is really adware. You are much better off with a good old normal tv hands down!

Re: Joost is a joke!

I've tried Joost and was not impressed at all. It's basically on demand TV but it has a very poor assortment of channels and the the quality stinks. Every show I attempted to watch continuously froze.

Compared to a few P2P streaming apps I've tried, Joost is really bad.

It's OK

I recently started usin Joost and found it to be reliable, no freezing, no adware or any other technical problems others have noted. My only complaint is the channel selection. About the only channel I enjoy is National Geographic. They need to at least have Spike channel, Discovery and similar channels. As it stands today, I don't see it being something most consumers want but they are still in Beta testing so I'll wait and see what channels they add to it.
