Got Joost?
Investors are confident that you'll want it soon
by KathrynV 10:26AM Saturday May 12 2007
Despite the fact that broadband Internet TV newbie, Joost, had some problems with their recent live launch, investors believe that the company will succeed. In fact, TelevisionPoint.com reports that five companies have come together to collectively invest approximately $45 million in Joost. Index Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Li Ka Shing Foundation, CBS Corporation and Viacom Participate in Round offered their funding so that Joost can “accelerate product development, global expansion, localization, and service offerings. When will you get on the Joost bandwagon?

not until it stops using it's own player and is able to use my player of choice, whatever that may be.

otherwise, I wish them good luck as the masses will download and run anything.

Re: hmm

I'm quite anxious to see what Joost look like, unless my isp Rogers decides to throttle this application.......If they do, then it's back to the drawing board for me - finding a new internet provider.

Invite yourself

You can all invite yourself through this link:

»joost.com/presents/gigaom-newteevee/

I LOVE the idea. The content is still lacking and it is still BETA, but it looks promising. I like the Comedy Central channel because they have "Stella" (a cancelled series but FUNNY AS HELL!). I think once more people sign up, more studios will offer content and it will become a great TV alternative.

EDIT: Nevermind. They ran out. I did this 2 days ago so I thought it would still be active. If you guys want an invite, PM me.

Joost invites here

I have nearly unlimited invites available, just email me to pedro dot vera at gmail.com and I'll send you one as soon as I can.

The service rocks. It is far from perfect, but I like where it is headed.

I am enjoying joost

The channel selection is pretty good. Been watching some things on National Geographics 3 channels. The commercials aren't intrusive and only come on every 15 min or so. Not bad

Great for being free

I'd easily pay these guys if they offered higher-quality streams. Adding in discovery channel and the history channel to the lineup would really complete it for me.

Hmm...

I'm a bit dissatisfied with Joost. Not because of how it works, but because of how it uses my connection. Since I'm on DSL, upload is going to drastically affect my download speed _; e.g..

My download speed is 1.5 mbps

My upload speed is 256 kbps.

When my upload is in full use, my download speed twindles down to my upload speed, which is obviously 256 kbps. Now, try that with video streaming.

I Beta tested and was disappointed

A has been mentioned, It takes over your entire bandwidth, and still freezes up frequently. Found that odd on a 6 Mbit connection.

There wasn't much interesting content, but that's to be expected. One thing that drove me nuts was the playback of the old "Rocky and Bullwinkle" cartoon show. It didn't matter where the show was, Joost would pause it and play a commercial. If anyone remembers the show... they had fairly idiot-proof places for commercial breaks, but apparantly, no one at Joost spent any time to find those spots, and just put commercials on a timer... X minutes into the program, and Y minutes into the program. Very annoying.

I like the concept though, and if they can work out the bugs, They may have something there. Personally, I removed it from my computer. Wasn't worth the disk space.

Re: I Beta tested and was disappointed

6Mbit means nothing if you have crap upload bandwidth. Joost requires quite a bit of free upload bandwidth. And if you dont have much, then it will saturate your connection, thus turning that 6mbit line into nothing.

No Linux

Got an invite but can not even try it. No linux support, and only runs in their player. Oh well.

Bad User Interface

Who designed this stupid UI? There is a pause button, but no stop. There is a full screen button, but nothing to close the window or shut down the application. Whenever I do restart the program, it always starts some match on the Fight Network. I guess there must be a stop button and close button somewhere, but they implemented some cool way perform these functions. This annoying interface reminds me of itunes.
