Pentagon Blocks MySpace and YouTube
Says move was due to lack of bandwidth...
The Department of Defense has banned troop access to MySpace, YouTube and eleven other popular websites, including Photobucket and Pandora Radio. Their reason? The DOD doesn't have enough bandwidth to meet demand, though at least one message (pdf) to troops suggests that security concerns were also part of the decision. The DOD has also been working to crack down on troop blog posts and e-mail that hasn't been approved by a commanding officer first, notes Wired News (see the new blogging rules pdf).

Nothing new or newsworthy here....

You guys think this is new? They censored letters in WWII due to security issues...same tactic, different technology. I personally believe that people back home get too much freaking information from the war zones now. Now you got guys hesitating and second guessing their actions (due to the increased pressure of public opinion or media crucifiction) which in all likelihood puts them at much greater risk. War is a horrible reality and the gruesome details of it should be left to the people who fight it. Civilians have no right to judge the actions of a soldier under extreme stress as the arena is entirely different......that's why you have the UCMJ. The military has done a decent job of policing their own over the years....the system is not perfect but it never will be as long as people are involved.

In my 6 years in the USN I encountered a few guys who were whiners. Inevitably the media seeks out those types for the "man in the service" interviews; it furthers the agenda. The VAST majority of the men and women in our armed forces are intelligent, pro military people with a deep sense of duty and honor. I resent the comment posted earlier that the majority blindly follow orders and have no individuality. Obviously the comment comes from someone who never served his country.
