Lets see. poor quality, ads, crappy player versus gorgeous HD quality, ads ripped out, plays in media player at full screen.
theres only one show i use bt for because theres another program in the same time slot i like to watch.
oh yeah i've NEVER bought a product based on a ad i saw on T.V.
i wished theyd just go with product placement and do away with inturrupted style.

I have, and based on my experience with the products, I wouldn't miss the ads one bit. Not that there aren't any good products being advertised. I'd have found the ones that I really needed (or really worked) by other means anyway.

I NEVER dl porn torrents, you can't preview it. I rather go to a gallery site and dl 1 min clips. those pages have a ridiculous amount of hits DAILY, & I mean by the millions. I dl TV shows, Movies, & Games as torrents not porn. I bet there's alot of people out there like me.

Who's "most people"? This is 50% of torrent users, not 50% of the US population. Until you have a large percentage of the population using BT, your statement has no merit.

Similar situation...

A couple years ago, I downloaded an episode of a TV show that was pre-empted by local sports on the night it aired. It was a crucial episode in a serial drama at the end of its season, and to miss an installment was to miss a critical part of the story. It was the first time I had downloaded an episode of a TV show.

I received my first and only DMCA letter as a result of downloading that episode.

Utter stupidity.

I use ShareTV.org for my TV and, according to them, almost no one gets DMCA letters from CBS, ABC, or Fox... but NBC and HBO do. Nothing legally troubling but just a letter to your ISP. I download Family Guy, The Daily Show, How I Met Your Mother, Grey's Anatomy (for the gf I swear), 30 Rock, and The Office without a DMCA yet (knock on wood). I'm exploring a few options regarding IP masking or VPN but so far nothing has worked 100%.

720p FTW

Why pay for Cable or satellite when they still put commercials on ? Either get an antenna on your roof and catch some VSB/DVB-T broadcast or torrent it away.

Love those 720p 1.1GB episodes of Heroes Best quality evar!

Not quite "Best Quality EVAR". Heroes is broadcast in 1080/60i telecined from 1080/24p. Run the 1080/60i MPEG-2 stream through a pull-up filter and you can see Heroes in glorious 1080/24p. That's "Best Quality EVAR".

It's going to take more than 1.1GB though... the 1080i broadcasts are about 7.5 GB though that includes the commercials.

That's ATSC to us Americans, because if Europe does it one way, we by damn sure are going to do it different.

DVB-T stands for "Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial". That's precisely what ATSC is. Which name is "superior" seems like absurd nit-picking to me.

ATSC in America and DVB-T in Europe both use MPEG2 encoding, so that's a moot issue.

The 8-VSB modulation scheme used by American TV broadcasters is not as robust as the OFDM scheme used by DVB-T broadcasters, everything else being equal. However 8-VSB can cover the same area using 1/10th the transmitter power, making it more energy efficient. Although ATSC stations could simply buy more powerful transmitters to help make up the difference, a revised "E-VSB" modulation scheme is being developed to help with fringe areas.

As an American, I'd prefer to buy a better antenna for my end, and have cleaner air.

That's a key point. For a large portion of those TV watchers that care about quality, downloading high quality torrents is a good method to obtain the content. I watch most of my routine TV in this manner since my provider's HD offering is questionable, but I also continue to pay my overpriced CATV bill so I feel that the content providers don't lose out.

Because your cable subscription isn't enough to pay the bills. Much of that money goes into the actual cable infrastructure. Your favorite shows still need a good deal more to stay on the air. Thus you still have commercials.

time for change

In all seriousness, what is the freakin' problem w/people sharing a tv show??? I might understand if it were HBO shows or whatnot that "the man" gets upset about... but regular tv, even cable tv should be shareable...

What is the difference between someone doing this, or someone letting a friend borrow a VHS tape???

This absurdity of people getting sued over something so harmless has to stop at some point.

I don't even use BT, except for random game patches, or an occasional Linux distro. But I'll say this much: I will NEVER want to buy another tv show from iTunes, unless they up the quality AND lower the price.

Tried ONCE to get a Battlestar Galactica episode only to find that my $2 (WAAAAAAY OVERPRICED BTW!) resulted in a SLOWLY downloaded video file who's quality was WORSE than I could've possibly imagined. The show was utterly UNWATCHABLE on a 15" laptop display. There's something seriously wrong w/that IMO.

The idiots who keep spouting about how bad piracy is need to seriously change their tune. If ABC and others can offer watchable (and free I might add) online video, WHO CARES if someone else wants to trade??? Why not leave a torrent of their own out there, even if it DID have a couple commercials, that others can download and watch. I just about GUARANTEE it'd be at least a little bit popular for ordinary users to click, download, and start watching pretty soon. It'd also have some level of assurance that the quality would be good, and that it was "official" and not some chance you're taking on a virus etc.

To me, I guess someone trading a TV show just isn't all that evil in my mind. Sure, I understand bootlegging something that you should pay for is wrong, but a TV show to which you already probably subscribe to??? Give everyone a break here, that's preposterous. No different than letting your friend, brother, or neighbor borrow your VHS tape that you might have recorded a show with. Nothing different about it except that the 'net was used instead of your two feet. Get over it.

Surprising that those stats say more people trade ordinary TV shows than anything else.

A logical person might conclude then that MOST cases against 'evil' downloaders are preposterous and that the practice of suing your audience should stop. ...Somehow I doubt the troll(s) would agree.

I don't mind paying for TV shows

But if I pay I expect them to be ad free, no motherfucking DRM and at least in 480p. And no more than $1. if the TV industry won't sell episodes then I will continue to use bt.

OnDemand

If NBC, FOX and ABC would offer OnDemand channels I would not download the episodes I missed which is the fault of the Networks and the Shows fault in the first place for moving the shows around in the time slots and just show a few new episodes and then show 8 reruns finish out the season with new episodes that I even forget the show is on because I found something else to do.

What?

If I already pay for cable and want to download the show I missed, why is this illegal?

I propose a solution to the problem. ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc., should allow paying cable subscribers to setup an account to verify they actually are paying for cable, then allow the user to watch whatever show they want. Or setup their own bt client that only paying cable subscribers are allowed to use.
