First Look At New FiOS Media Guide
Coming to FiOSTV customers later this summer
by Karl Bode Tuesday 22-May-2007
Verizon e-mails us to note that they've got an early preview of their new FiOS TV interactive media guide at this URL. According to Verizon, the new interface is available in the freshly launched FiOS market of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Other FiOS TV subscribers will have it later this summer. Users in our FiOS TV forum have been dissecting the promised features in this "FiOS 2.0" interface upgrade since it was first hinted at earlier this year.

Looks very nice

As a Directv customer and Comcast employee if the IMG looks/works anything like the preview than that is awesome. The linking with media from PC is cherry on top.

That feature is available now.

I like the idea of only listings for programming that I subscribe to.

And where are the advertisements (errr, comcast!).

what would really be the cherry on top is to share movies/video between the pc and dvr. I still have stuff saved from way last year that I need to record to dvd or something.

this really looks impressive, and i cant wait

I really hate being teased with something I can't get.

It's like that hot chick I saw in a 500SL at the gas station today.

Due to copyright issues, you can file DVR sharing under the list of "features you'll never see".

That was so much better than the DISH Network guide I've been using for the last couple of years and the Time Warner digital cable guide before that.

I wish that we had the chance to get FIOS in our area, but, alas and alack, we're stuck with Time Warner, DISH, DirecTV and Uverse(someday) as our only choices.

Everything I want in a guide

I have to hand it to Verizon, they just one upped every other phone, cable, and satellite provider. This is the most impressive guide I have ever seen. As a Comcast customer, I hope that those working on Comcast's next generation guide are taking notes.

Re: HOLY SHAT!!!

That I can kinda understand...but they have me surrounded 360 degrees. I live next to a couple of hotels and a two street single family home development and none of us can get anything but DSL. Now the next block over has had it for for about 8 months. Problem is that we are in no mans land. When tax time comes they both claim us but when you try to get anything then they play hot potato. Blah!

Yet most people find the overall price of the service(s) to be a great value compared to what you get from Cable/Satellite.

Re: Let's remember...

In my service area, the programming is about the same as E* but with my setup I use 2 dual tuner HD-DVRs (VIP622s) and with my E* tuners they have a 2nd output for SD to other TVs which can also display the DVR's programs and take over 1 of the tuners via UHF remote. So by the time I pay the rental fees for 2 HD-DVRs, plus 2 regular digital boxes for the SD sets, plus 2 DVR service fees, it ends up being $40-$50 more and my 2 SD sets still wouldn't have DVR service. They're more on par with Time Warner who also has close to $20/mo HD-DVR+service fees per HD-DVR. With Verizon, my HW fees were going to me more than I would have paid for the programming. Plus my neighbor said he got a letter than Verizon is taking another price increase (they already increased his FiOS HSI fee 11% since he got it last year). Ouch. Verizon is on the rampage with their increases and their HW fees are already high. If you use just basic services from them, maybe 1 HD DVR they're reasonable. But if you need anything more than that, FiOS is a total rip. Their HSI is more expensive than TWC too unless you sign a 1 year contract.

If FiOS was my only option, I would certainly take it but at the present time Verizon's competitors here have stepped up and are offering as good or better services for less money.

and it keeps the best feature of the current Verizon guide!

Display only favorite channels! I hated scrolling through all the crappy channels I didn't get or watch when I had Comcast. Being able to edit the channels in my guide has been great. I am glad Verizon has decided to keep that feature.

Re: and it keeps the best feature of the current Verizon guide!

Agreed.

When I had Comcast, I was stuck with a guide that had 300+ channels. It took forever to scroll through them all to find what I wanted.

With FiOS, my guide has just 32 channels -- the ones I watch the most. I can scroll through and see everything showing on my favorite channels in a matter of seconds. There's no banners, advertisements, or other such clutter. Why someone would pay $12-$15/mo for a DVR and tolerate all sorts of crap in their guide is beyond me.

The new "guide 2.0" looks great, but unfortunately the FiOS DVR is still limited to a paltry 160Gb storage. That might be a reasonable amount for a DirecTV or Dish DVR with their "HDTV Lite," but FiOS HDTV is far superior in quality, and superior HDTV quality requires more space.

Tivo Series3 users recently got the ability to add 1Tb eSATA drives to their boxes, so hopefully Verizon will enable the eSATA connection on its DVRs in the not-too-distant future.

Wow - very impressive!

I love the proposed Search feature similar to inputting text msgs on a cell phone. I have Dish currently with the ViP622...while decent, it can be a PiTA to type with the slow response time.

FiOS TV has been available in my area for sometime now. I've been with Dish since 2000 and my current contract ends in September. Giving up on what has been a positive experience so far makes it quite difficult to make a decision.

Time Warner Cable's interface for the Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD DVR sucks compared to the Verizon fios interface. I wish FIOS was available to me

Maybe not. But those of us served by one of the Rockville COs (Montrose Road, RKVLMDMR) can get it. So I have it now!!!! And I absolutely luv it. Too bad so sad for the folks served by the other Rockville CO, RKVLMDRV.

FiOSTV is available here now, but I'm underwhelmed by the lineup.
