From Time Warner Cable; FiOS launches, too

The Houston Chronicle notes that the Time Warner Cable network in Houston is set to be fully transferred to Comcast on June 19 as part of the Adelphia deal. The piece has a brief Q&A on what transitioned customers can expect. Customers should get some faster speed out of the deal, though pricing packages will eventually change slightly -- see the differences documented yesterday. Verizon today also announced that FiOS has launched in Houston.

Sucks for them

Some of those TWC customers can look forward to an even bigger "How dare you not have our crap CATV?!?" penalty.

But if it's any solace, Comcast says you can avoid the massive increase if you start buying their overpriced garbage CATV service. Then they'll make you feel better by calling your now doubled bill a discount.

Re: Sucks for them

Yup - say good bye to CATV as you know it.

When Comcast was here in Valencia, they would not sell me the 'basic' 13 package (available on their web site)for ~$14/month, but would sell the $50.40 version of analog.

Re: Sucks for them

No, I mean the penalty people get for refusing to buy other overpriced crap services.

I had ATTBi, then many many many months AFTER Comcast took over I suddenly and without notice got a 30% price increase. Those who had their overpriced CATV just kept paying the SAME rate we all had before. Their "discount" was merely the addition of a line of their bill saying they were getting a discount. Wow, some discount.

Avoidance of an increase isn't a discount.

Thats funny you say that, because consistently over the last 6 months I have heard DirecTV customers complain that their rates have increased to the point that it's useless to keep them if we cost the same... I am not making this up, but it's ironic that they charge near the same price for the same stuff, minus Video On Demand... I guess you could say the same about AT&T and their "forced bundle" of landline and DSL. And if you get a dry loop, you really aren't saving money there either, because it costs about the same... But oh well...

Re: Sucks for them

I don't doubt it. E* has been taking consistent increases to. And this is only a recent trend. Both E* and D* went years and years and years without an increase and suddenly they have Cableitis and take increases every year.

As far as DBS, vs FiOS, vs CATV it typically comes down the HW costs because the programming is generally within $15 of each other.

If I had a single SD TV, FiOS was the steal of the century, way cheaper than both Time Warner and E*. Only after tacking on 2 HD-DVRs did my FiOS quote go through the roof. I got similar price quotes from Time Warner, again only because of the DVR costs. Where E* got cheap for me was that I got one of my E* dual tuner HD DVRs as part of my lease, another pretty cheap on eBay and that they charge only $6 in DVR fees which cover all the DVRs on the account. It also saved me money that the E* DVRs I have include an output that can go to another TV (sharing the DVR features and one of the tuners) which saves me having to rent 2 additional tuners.

There is definitely no "cheapest provider" for everyone.

I feel sorry for Houstonians, Comcast was recently (in last year) run outta Dallas for not paying the franchise fees and taxes to the city. Not to mention the misrepresentation of services i.e. Digital Cable TV when they don't re-broadcast any of the analog channels in digital, those channels are still delivered with the same crappy analog signal. I get free basic cable here and many of the channels are just plain unwatchable. Thank God for DirecTV and AT&T/SBC-DSL

Hate it for you!

I just migrated from twc to comcast a few months back. My service has been degraded. Not to the point I cant use. But from 6pm to 11pm is terrible. Forget about gaming or streaming at those times. Pings always shoot up to 200ms. All other times ping is about 40ms. Which of course is great for gaming. And believe me I have reported this over and over. Nothing ever gets resolved. When I had twc my pings stayed the same no matter the time of day. Enjoy your comcast. Hopefully your experience is a little better than mine.

Actually my point was that transition is almost never smooth.. It wasn't when I transitioned from @home to ATTBI or from ATTBI to comcast.. and it wasn't in the comcast to RR transition either.. But they do get better eventually..

Re: just curious,

Not that I know of its pretty much just "Time Warner" I can't get DSL so this is the really the only other option. I don't watch much TV so this doesn't make me that sad losing a few channels nor do I have a HD TV.

Shouldn't you thank TW also? They are the ones that supposedly threw you under the bus.

I blame the service provider - TW isn't obligated to me in any way except to stop advertising the stupid astronaut every few minutes on tv.

No to ESPN

@sbcglobal.net

And I like Road Runner

It will be interesting to see how this plays out and if service changes quality. If it get worst I guess I will have to try ATT. Why can't people leave things along that work? New and improved is an oxymoron.

I have to say i like Comcast being from Houston

I like the service i get from Comcast here in Co vs TWC i had it Houston for the last 8 years i . The only down part is the DVR box's the SA ones from TWC worked better then the Motorola one i have now. I hope CC does the right thing there because we all know TWC did not give a carp.

CC is not that bad i can say this first hand since i had both and lived in Houston as well.

FIOS

Alright I'm in Missouri City which is right outside Houston and have RR. Now there is some good news in post, FIOS is in the area. Now granted it's like 40 miles outside of Houston by the coast, but people in my area have a really good chance of seeing FIOS. Local phone service here is Verizon, so hopefully we'll be able to drop Comcast and switch to FIOS soon.

After paying 50 dollars a month for over five years for a simple 1.5 service, we took a look at the new offerings to new users and decided to complain and request the Elite 6Mb/s. We never really expected to see 6Mb/s but did expect to see something close to 5. Now we live in Spring Branch Campbell Rd area in an old established neighborhood that has been around for 40 years. Several months ago new line was run behind the house and we were told by the workers this was newer faster cabling. Wrong! it was just pure copper and an attempt to fix old problems. After going back and fourth with tech center on the speed issue an AT&T repairman replaced an old worn out NID box at our request. He tests the capacitance at the line unconnected to the house and he said he doubted we would ever get 6Mb/s service. My first thought was well how about the new U-Verse thinking that new line was fiber, no! it seems the fiber service stops one block away from the house servicing an old rundown apartment complex and it will not come any further. After all this trouble they cut the 6Mb/s back to their middle tier package of 3Mb/s , it has not reached 3 and stays around 2500 consistently. I made an email request to turn the service to 6 back on but it will be Monday or later before that happens, if it even does.

In short they have flooded Houston with advertising to sale their new U-Verse systems especially to old customers but they can't deliver unless you live in a 350,000 dollar new home or a 40 year old apartment. We're not happy campers here.

The 6Mb/s service we used for four days did see 4Mb/s and it was usually consistent at 3800 even at peak use hours. I still think it is better than comcast or roadrunner offers simply because of the price and the double upload speeds that were staying at 630 using that Elite service. I did call roadrunner asking some questions and the 5Mb/s cable would probably be no better than that 4Mb/s at a greater cost and with one half the upload speeds. So I guess like it or not we stay with SBC at least until something improves. This is a good example of gross oversight when it comes to deceptive advertising on SBC's part.
