TVA has unclear hesitations about fiber
(old news - 03:21PM Sunday May 27 2007)
tags: Fiber · cable · municipal
Despite problems with incumbent cable provider, Charter, Clarksville, TN approved approved a plan last November for the Clarksville Department of Electricity to start providing triple play over fiber. This month was the month that the first users were supposed to start seeing the service, but plans have been delayed. Apparently, the Tennessee Valley Authority failed to issue its stamp of approval in a timely manner because they had “hesitations” (which they failed to explain). They gave their approval in January but the fiber-optic system won’t be ready to start the service until at least September.

The Reason Is Simple

They were all f*'ing off during the period from Thanksgiving to New Year's...just like everyone else. Office parties, other parties, family visits, Christmas shopping...the list goes on and on.

Anyone who has been in construction for any length of time knows that you might as well "shut the doors" because NOTHING is going to get done during this period of time.

Always been like this...always will be.

Re: The Reason Is Simple

Your answer is broad and incorrect. I live in that area and have followed this closely. Quite simply, they underestimated the time it would take. Some of their deadlines came and passed without equipment being delivered, AND they received a major setback when TVA changed the way they had to finance the deal.

Bad news for Charter...

The one thing that can bring down Charter: ANY competition. Charter thrives in places where the only choice is Charter. When they don't have to compete, they can be as terrible as they want (are).

Re: Bad news for Charter...

agreed, when this was announced I noticed my charter bill going up little by little and changing prices of internet service. It appears charter is trying to take all they can before they lose their customer base.

finally clarksville is on the map for some improvements

I was speaking with one of their workers. He told me it would be atleast 4-5 months since their plant/centers aren't even wired yet. That sucks, but atleast its coming!!! clarksville with fiber... who wooda thunk?
