The Gears are Spinning
Google takes on Microsoft
Google is in the beginning stages of launching Google Gears, an open-source technology for creating offline web applications, a technology which could challenge Microsoft. Mimicking Microsoft application abilities to be launched without online access, Google Gears will allow online items to be read offline; the first is Google Reader, which should be available through Google Gears starting today. The service should work with all main browsers on all main platforms.

Ha, ha

"Google says Gears will work with all main browsers on all main platforms – Windows, Mac and Linux. But while it says the Firefox and Opera browsers welcome Gears, it made no mention of Microsoft or its Internet Explorer web browser."

Bwahahaha

As Microcrap becomes increasingly irrelevant, it only fuels their desperation as evidenced by their phony-baloney "patent infringement" accusations against FOSS. I'm sure after this Microcrap will be cooking up new infrigement accusations and add Google to their ever growing list of enemies.

Irrelevant you said... well no matter how much you hate them they are still the #1 software maker in the world, and companies "mimicking" their applications states the opposite.

Other new products include...

Google-y eYes - 2 webcams floating in a liquid for sharper focus and zoom and stereo image recording for true 3D reproduction...

iGoo - sealant/adhesive/laptop keyboard repair kit

GooGone - they'll buy out the maker of this product already in existence

Go-ogle - online, real-time person ogling with remote, mobile cameras around the world (search word "nice ass!")

Google lacking in the UI dept

I find google lacking terribly in the UI department. All of their apps are either too complicated or too spartan. Microsoft has a leg up on them in this area.

too complicated? such as.............??? I can't think of one which would fall into that category, but then again I don't know that I've tried every single thing they've done...
I thought Google Earth was one of the easiest and greatest applications to come along in some time...

I like "spartan" apps. which do what they should.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see what comes of this. Sounds like a good idea though. ..As long as these apps. aren't sending every little detail home about me (solely for the purpose of targeted advertising of course ), I think they might actually be worthwhile to check out.

To me sketchup is ok but nothing like 3D Studio MAX. People can learn Sketchup much faster then any other 3D Program out there.

Remember sketchup wasn't created by Google it was bought by Google after version 5 I believe.

Re: Google lacking in the UI dept

and that's the problem....Google has bought most of the products in its "suite" whereas microsoft for the most part has built them from the ground up or done an excellent integration job (Visio). This is why Google's offering appears glommed together....because it is.

sketchup , earth , youtube , blogger all buy outs from google's adsense money now

this is the time that microsoft has to make adcenter free for 2 years ,,, google is trying to make free charges for its web-based softwares ..

so microsoft has to make adcenter free then adsense will die eventually .. microsoft wins ..

microsoft dont need adcenter's money , so let it be free for 2 years or 5 years .. MS must play the google way ..

do this and MS wins ...

without adsense or adwords .. will they be able to buy other people's inventions ? take care of search google or else you wont exists anymore

An advertising agency that has the bucks to buy/create their own billboards.

It makes sense for them to go for it... regardless of whether or not it works out in the end.

This is special how?

Ok, so after RFA, I don't get it. How is this special and how is this specifically going after MSFT?

There are plenty of apps out there that can deal with data "off-line." I don't see this as an outright attack on MSFT specifically. In fact I have here on my system a design tool from IBM that's local, browser based, and works just fine without an internet connection.

An offline news reader? Whoo hoo. Big freakin deal there. Quite sure there are a few of those out there already.

Sounds to me that the whole thing is a tad overblown, trying to make something out of nothing.

It goes after MSFT by (eventually) allowing Docs and Spreadsheets to be used offline, thus mounting a challenge to Office. One of the big complaints about Google Docs is that you have to be online to use it, which could be a problem on the road or on a plane. If you can work on a Google Doc offline, that makes it a more serious competitor to Word.

Re: This is special how?

Hmm, ok I guess as I see it there are already several Word competitors...so I don't see how this is all that special.

If it is an actual installed product then aside from perhaps the ability to sync up to the online version, how would this be any different from other competitors like OpenOffice or any other office suite?
