Aurora CityWide Wi-Fi Delayed
More municipal wireless problems making news
by KathrynV Thursday 31-May-2007 tags: municipal
The Beacon News reports that the Wi-Fi network planned for downtown Aurora has been delayed. Originally intended to be set up in time for the city’s Midwest Literary Festival in September, they now say that their target date is unreasonable given that they’ve set up less than 20% of the antennas necessary for the service. The delay is caused by ongoing negotiations over the use of poles owned by ComEd; MetroFi (the company setting up the network) is working out the details but won’t put a new target date on the rollout.

Com Ed...

...is in the middle of a bitter dispute with the state over rate rollbacks and other regulatory effluent so I doubt they're in any hurry to negotiate these pole leases for pennies each.

yep I cant think of one person in southern IL that is not bitching about AmerenIP and Charter cable currently. From what I have been hearing on the streets AmerenIP has been taking quite a few bullets currently.

.

The more I read and think about these projects the more I think they are just a waste of money and time.

If only the Verizon CSRs worked this well.

wifi

What do people use city wifi for?

I would use it for voip (to replace cellular), and on a handheld device for email (to replace cellular data)... and save a pile of money!!!

Re: wifi

You think anyone will allow you to save money?

If it where that utopia it would of happened long ago, and so far most if not all articles (correct me if I am wrong) shows that these projects are simply not working with low return or city use.

Although it might sound nice at first, the idea is deeply flawed and I can't believe the city of Miami Beach wants to pursue this when they're hundreds of APs from hotels just in collins or washington ave.

What does the city of miami beach residents think when you are comparing free (fast access) vs paid. Not only will the businesses not support the idea but its throwing money away when they should be concerned of fixing the freaking roads around the area or at least re-paint lines.

If the city of miami or better said all of Miami-Dade county wants to gain more money or better yet save more why not make all highway tolls Sunpass only, you don't really need a transponder, as long as your license plate is registered with the service you can zoom on by because the high speed cameras will read your license plate (yes even if you hit 185mph they still get a crystal clear shot).

That way you are not only easing up by not having a bottleneck on the highway, but change is not required since it's actually sent to a account. Or better yet get a bill every month from the department of transportation.

No need for transponders, and would it not make sense to include a RFID chip on license plates already so the only data on that chip is your license number.

I can think of many ideas on how Miami-Dade could save money or possibly earn money to pay for county or even state needs.

But WiFi is simply just not one of those things, I rather let MetroPCS/Sprint/Cingular provide wireless data services because the network is already there. Since they are using different technologies and Sprint plans to use Boost Mobile as a competitor to MetroPCS wireless data services is on the rise and the carriers are working hard to have they're networks up and running by 2010.

Let WiFi stay at the hotel or in the home/apartment/cardboard box.

Eventually once wireless data services improve and latency becomes very low we could see data only packages available from providers at cheap and economical prices that third party providers can provide as there own e.x Skype.

Not Going to Happen

If I remember right, they have been trying to get an agreement with ComED for over a year now. If the city is serious about this plan, they need to face up to the fact that they are going to have to find somewhere else to put the antennas.

IMHO they should just dump this project and work with AT&T to get Lightspeed rolling. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but they failed to consider everything that going to be involved to make it happen.

Re: Not Going to Happen

They are actually placing them on Street lights and other city owned property.
MetroFi is providing the service for free and including an ad banner across the top of the browser to subsidize their investent.
Risky if you ask me. The city claims it is a step in providing low income residents internet access. But I have yet to run into a low income resident that has a WiFi enabled laptop.. or the "knowins" to set up WiFi on their desktop.

Re: Not Going to Happen

Some are going on street light etc., but they were going to put a fair number on power poles.

Absolutely, I doubt most even have a computer.

For me, as much as I dislike Comcast. Their service is just fine and I wouldn't switch to the free unless it was really well done. If it's going to be like 128/128 forget it. I doubt it's going to be in my area though any way.
