Have You Been Watching Your Newspaper Lately?
Daily newspapers turn to online video
by KathrynV Saturday 09-Jun-2007 tags: Video · competition
‘In the race to capitalize on the popularity of broadband video, newspapers are continuing to take a page from TV stations’ playbooks by producing increasingly sophisticated newscasts and other Web programs,’ reports Broadcasting & Cable. In order to draw the attention of consumers who don’t necessarily read the news, newspapers are offering online video as downloads for mobile devices and providing content with a fresh spin geared towards a younger audience. Part of the goal is to challenge the grasp that TV stations have on this population but stations aren’t currently seeing the news video as a threat to their popularity.

good

the world is changing, culture is changing, society is changing. if they don't adapt they'll go out of business. I would guess that in 2 generations form now, maybe even one no one will read much in newspaper or magazine format. it will all be accessed through devices. computers, phones whatever.

Re: good

Unless they develop something like the E-paper from the Minority Report movie.

I think that'd be pretty handy.

Newspapers...they still have them....

who cares!

Most of these websites require registration, and to be even more to the point.... I could care less about most of what the media consider news any way..

I want tech news and thats all I want, any thing else I can get and more details than will be on the news, by other means.

Could really care less about newspapers and their sites, and most of the other traditional media sites and outlets.

They could go the way of the dodo bird.

TV, newspaper, Magazines...

I sit with a computer in front of me all day, two of them *ARE* TVs(and DVRs).

Most of what TV news stations have for *us* is regurgitated and time shifted so they can still make money off the ads on TV broadcast(OTA/Cable/Sat/???)

Yesterday, nothing but that whining Paris Hilton on every damn channel. I muted the TV. Played a couple games... FTC!

I have an account at the "local" paper site. never use it really.

Eh, I see news when I go to check my email...

Gotta do somethin' with all those trees we cut down!
Also, are you seriously saying that you haven't bought a newspaper since 1987?

I 100% agree with your choice of the weather channel as a necessity. If I worked from home (again), I would have a dedicated Weather Channel TV running at all times. In the mornings/evenings I leave it on in my bedroom just so I can hear it in the background! I also agree that local news is important. Many things that wont make it to national news are fascinating and impact me, although living in NYC almost everything that happens here IS national news! CNN is a little too left for me however, and I prefer FNC. In all honesty I get the majority of my news from Google News, so when I watch TV its mostly for other purposes.

Online newspapers

I think the only future for newspapers is online. Our local paper must have a different opinion, they only put the headline on the website, then when you want to read the story you get about 1 sentence and then a note to see the actually paper. And they have to gall to sell ads on the page. The other local papers in the area do a better job, I predict that our local newspaper will be gone soon, unless they can see the light.

Personally...

I would kind of rather newspapers stay the way they are.

old joke

when radio started to gain in popularity way back then.
one of the first things (in fact it was the first WKDKA) broadcast was the news.

the joke back then was "what is the difference between radio and a newspaper...

well you can wrap a fish in a newspaper

newspapers have survived for a very long time and i still think they will be around for a while yet

@verizon.net

newspapers are DEAD they just don't know it

newspapers are dead and they just don't know it yet..
99% of the major outlets are SO far in bed with advertisers that the rest can't be trusted anymore. even broadcast tv viewership is waning in recent years (for different reasons).. sooner or later cable news such as CNN will see their decline and demise as well in the next generation! so, the party of herding viewers like sheep are severely numbered..

No, But I Do Check Their Site Regularly

I also have an account at my local newspaper's online site. In my case, however, even though my paper's site does indeed have these sort of newscasts available, I actually prefer to read the articles.

Part of the reason for this is that I am hearing impaired and have difficulty retaining verbal information, while I've been able to develop my ability to retain written information.
