Point Topic has released their latest broadband statistics and notes that there's now 298 million broadband subscribers worldwide as of the end of March 2007. The United States remains the largest broadband country in the world with 60,362,830 total subscribers, though China is close behind with 56,258,499. Greece was the fastest growing broadband country, with Romania and other Eastern European countries also growing quickly.

Hmmm error?

I'd be willing to guess that this is the number of connections that exist. As for the total number of people who use the Internet? I'd say triple or even quadruple that number.

This also doesn't take into account the large amount of dial-up users that still exist out there...

hmm, it would be rather interesting to see just how many total Internet (no matter the technology) users there are out there...note, users, not connections...

What is broadband?

Various definers of broadband have assigned a minimum data rate to the term. Here are a few:

* Newton's Telecom Dictionary: "...greater than a voice grade line of 3 KHz...some say [it should be at least] 20 KHz."
* Jupiter Communications: at least 256 Kbps.
* IBM Dictionary of Computing: A broadband channel is "6 MHz wide."

 The term as used in computer speak is grossly abused.

In reality it has nothing to do with bits per second rather the width of the channel in Hertz. But I digress.

There really ought to be another term coined that denotes channel speed in bits per second.

actually, no; ISDN and 1xRTT (128k and 144k respectively) are both non-broadband technologies. Broadband, as defined by the FCC is 256 kilobits down.

Users or Customers?

That does not seem like very many to me.

I wonder if they are estimating total broadband users or simply the number of customers.

We have had a home LAN since 1998 and four family members share a single connection. Are we 1 or 4 of the 298 million?

that's what I was mostly getting at, Tom; I suspect that your family would be "1"...if each customer is counted, I can believe those numbers; if each user was counted...I would think it would be much MUCH higher.
