T-Mobile service allows floating between Wi-Fi, cellular
(old news - 08:49AM Friday Jun 15 2007)
tags: business · wireless · VoIP
Gizmodo quotes an anonymous insider who says that T-Mobile's Hotspot@Home service is going to launch June 27. The UMA service allows users to "seamlessly" switch between traditional wireless voice networks and Wi-Fi VoIP if you're using a T-Mobile-operated hotspot (allowing you to avoid gobbling up minutes when near Wi-Fi). Early impressions of the service were mixed, but a lot of the initial network handoff issues have apparently been resolved.

Ditch Landline

I think this will finally be the nail in the coffin for those debating about ditching the landline and are with T-Mobile.

Right Concept

If this does not cost extra is a great service for those users. The question is, besides Airport where else you see Tmobile hotspot?

It's not just the T-Mobile HotSpots (Starbucks, American Airlines clubs, Border's, etc...) but any unlocked access point. The phone that I tested this service with worked perfectly with my security enabled router (just had to type in the long security code into the phone's memory beforehand).

The service can be used on ANY wi-fi router (so long as there is no "click through" page as some hotels have).

So What...

I think they should work on getting their service to actually work before expanding into newer services. My cell never works so I'll be switching to Verizon at the end of my contract.

Re: So What...

Move out of the sticks then... I have T-Mobile (for my BlackBerry Pearl) and I have service in all of the DFW area, and it worked perfectly in San Francisco, New York Metro area, and London, England.

All hotspots.

It should work with regular wifi hotspots too. (as long as you know the wireless password). Not just t-mobile owned ones.

IT DOES. How many times do I have to tell you people this?

@cox.net

VOIP alternative, not

you add it to your plan (not all TMobile plans qualify) for an additional $19 a month for unlimited calls via ur broadband or @ hotspots. they aren't saying when it's available for what areas or whether what existing A/G wireless AP will work- time will tell?
