Cox on HDTV
Realistic expectations from the CEO

In the midst of many ridiculous claims about the number of HDTV channels that companies are going to soon be offering, one player has been suspiciously quiet. But perhaps that’s because Cox is actually enacting a reasonable plan for HDTV growth, planning for 50 possible channels by year’s end and perhaps another 100 next year. In comparison with Comcast’s 800 channel prediction, the plan seems measly, but realistic. Cox is also taking a realistic approach to competition (resolving issues as they arise) and mobile video (which can be a supplementary service, not a competitive one).

Please give me more channels cox!

The funny part is they are talking about capacity, how about increasing what's available NOW! I have cox, in a large market, Orange County, and I get a whopping 15 channels. In the past few months they've actually removed channels (Lost the inHD lineup).

I'm moving in the next month and I'm considering not signing up for HD at my new residence. The cost is pricey as well.

InHD and InHD2 went off the air May 1, 2007.

Everybody lost them, Cox didn't have a choice.

This is wrong - inHD is still around - it was renamed Mojo - and most places still have it.

inHD2 is the one that was shut down.

I still had InHD for awhile, but they just renamed it to Mojo. Mojo used to be InHD's night time show lineup. I think Mojo is doing great and there's many programs on there I like to watch.

InHD 2 officially went off the air on 12/31/06, many cable systems removed it or replaced earlier though. On 5/1/07 InHD 1 was officially renamed to Mojo.

Cox Has How Many Channels?

Do you mean to say that the sum total of channels, both analog and digital, SD and HD, amount to only 15? Or is it your specific service plan that's limited to 15 channels? If it's the former, then Cox must be really pathetic. But if it's the latter, you must be subscribing to Basic Cable.

Re: only if there where 100 HD channels available

I cannot even get my locals through Directv let alone through an antenna (and absolutely no hope for HD locals).

So how about that, can DirecTV at least provide me with LO-DEF Fox, NBC, etc?

All this bull about HD and I just want to watch freakin TV!

Why can't you get local TV stations? Terrain? If so, I'll bet that some time in the not-too-distant past, your community had a perfectly good CATV system to deliver OTA TV to your home.

Although you're certainly in the deep-fringe area for terrestrial broadcast TV reception, you should still be able to get a viewable signal from Buffalo, using a deep-fringe antenna mounted atop a sufficiently tall mast.

You'll probably have better luck getting 480i ATSC than analog at a decent S/N ratio. For analog reception, you need at least 40 dB of S/N, but digital works just fine at S/N ratios as low as 6 dB. So stick an RF preamp up on the antenna and add an antenna rotator, and you might be able to get Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

private vs public

cox can get away saying this because they are a private company. They dont have shareholders to answer to.

Are you saying that you have to be private to be truthful about new product rollouts ?

I'm not disagreeing, just clarifying. A private company has stakeholders to answer to, just not public shareholders.

Re: private vs public

You tell us lol...

I think being private allows Cox to be more open about plans, and more realistic. They don't have to put out "bold" plans to keep timid investors in the ranks. The stakeholders all have easy access to the leadership and the vision plans, reducing that "timid" element.

That said, we both know just how secretive Cox can be about developments. lol

actually, a private cable company is one of the most dangerous. They can not give a fuck about their customers, who often have them as the only choice, and they don't have any shareholders to answer to. So they can be up front like in this case, or they can be secretive too.
