Friday (iPhone) Open (iPhone) ThreadWorship at the church of Apple... ( old news - 09:06PM Friday Jun 29 2007) tags: wireless · hardware · BBR-News · Mac We spent a few moments talking to some of the 75 or so people waiting in line in Manhattan for something they were calling an "iPhone." "iSmarter" New Yorkers apparently avoided the hassle of the Apple Mega Circus and waited in a more genteel way at the 86th street AT&T store between 2nd and 3rd avenues. We decided to track the purchase process by following two iPhone devotees, Mark Hall and Lee Bonano (a Dslreports.com user), who avoided multi-day camping and queued in the line at 9:30 this morning. At 4:30 this afternoon, the line was only about 50 people deep. Amazing when you consider the blocks-long line in midtown at the Apple Store. The well-geared Hall and Bonano called the line almost "pleasant", with no Ebayers, paid place holders, or fist fights. Some were confused why the two were camped in front of Burger King, thus the sign. Less fun was the purchasing process; a clunky affair whereby only a few people were allowed in the store at a time. The first ten in line went in promptly at 6:00 p.m. and the rest were asked to wait. There was a brief moment of panic when it looked like the server had crashed all of those credit checks hitting the system at the same time. When we left Bonano and Hall with iPhones happily clutched in their hands (un-activated until they're taken home to iTunes), there were still a significant number of people waiting for their turn in line.
Meanwhile, some odd iPhone blurbs we've seen in the unavoidable and deafening wall of coverage today: •Philly's Mayor spent today in line for an iPhone, until someone asked him why he wasn't working.•Perp steals Fox News reporter's mic on live TV, then unsuprisingly gets busted.•Verizon's answer to the iPhone: uh, guys -- we're open until 9pm.•First person in line at the San Francisco store doesn't actually know what she's waiting for.•Americans get EDGE, Europeans get HSDPA.•The Today Show host can't answer iPhone•The iPhone cake.•Stephen Colbert reviews the iPhone.•The Woz turns down special Steve Jobs treatment, slums it with the rest of us.iPhone fan or not it's Friday, so empty your head (or iPhone impressions, line shots, unpacking shots or downright venomous "For the love of God it's just a @#$!@! phone" rants) into the comment section below. | Nine Alternatives To Apple's iPhone
»www.informationweek.com/hardware···eryText=
Apple's iPhone is the sought-after smartphone of the moment, but it's outside the reach of some people and not ideal for everyone. Not only is the iPhone expensive at $499 to $599, but some IT departments won't support it, making it impractical for professionals who want to stay on the good side of the CIO.
Fortunately, there are many iPhone alternatives, including those with media players for music, video, and streaming content. At prices ranging from $75 to $450, they're cheaper than Steve Jobs' latest pet project, too. Go to the link above to check out 9 phones that can do what the iPhone does and you won't have to pay $500 or $600 for them. -- -- Internet News My BLOG My Web Page

But that's the whole point. What does this phone REALLY offer minus the touch screen, that other phones don't offer? It's slow, clunky and costly. I can pretty much bet if the phone was from, say Creative Labs, there wouldn't be much, if any, media frenzy about it. At least with that, you can place free calls thru VoIP from a free internet connection at a hotspot. They make mobile broadband cards too. I still can't believe people want to pay that much. It's feature set isn't all THAT spectacular. Quad band, touch screen phone with an iPod tethered into the phones motherboard. No removable storage. Locked to one network, with no firmware made that is certified by Apple to work with another GSM provider. It's stuck on GSM in the first place, making EDGE the only available data service, which sucks. The operating system is proprietary as hell. Leave it in your pocket, and find out that you called 8 of your friends by bumping into the screen thru your clothes. Finger prints all over the screen from pressing it. Slow ass iTunes has to be installed on your PC, also meaning you have to agree to take the Apple Media Player software, including QuickTime, just to activate it. Enough of my rant, but point blank, screw that phone. And people here are actually arguing back that it's worth it? Have fun with that piece of ........ It's feature set isn't all THAT spectacular. If you look at it just as a feature set, maybe not. But you have to see the device as a whole. There is nothing like it.
One feature, the touch screen, shouldn't be sold short. This isn't like what you're used to from Palm or Windows CE devices. It's multitouch -- kinda like the Microsoft Surface, only smaller, cheaper, and here now. See the demos where the guy "grabs" a picture with his fingers, stretches it and turns it? You've never done that before.
The arguments against the iPhone (yours and others') all seem to be from a "pragmatic" viewpoint, which kind of misses the point. No one needs an iPhone. It's purely about technophilia. -- 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0

| PI's convicted of computer hacking on behalf of rich clients
»news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6766841.stm
Two police officers who moonlighted as private detectives have been convicted of bugging phones and hacking into computers on behalf of wealthy clients.
Jeremy Young and Scott Gelsthorpe set up Active Investigation Services and ran a service dubbed "Hackers Are Us".
But they were dubbed "Hackers Are Us" in court for the "extras" they offered for a wealthy elite. They used illegal means to provide extra services for clients and had a price list for those services.
For £5,000, AIS would "monitor" - or hack into - an e-mail account.
For this, they used the expertise of Marc Caron, an IT specialist based in Phoenix, Arizona.
He used so-called Trojan horses, which infiltrate computers through a seemingly innocuous e-mail, website or programme, but then allow hackers access to everything on the machine.
Caron pleaded guilty in the US and will be sentenced on 28 June.
Among the computers targeted were official networks in government offices.
AIS was investigated by the Metropolitan Police's Anti-Corruption Command following a tip-off from BT.
Then in July 2004 they began three months of intensive surveillance into what they called AIS's "corporate espionage".

| One in three suffer cyber-bullying
»news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6245798.stm
One in three children has suffered from some form of online bullying, according to research from the Pew Internet and American Life Project.
Girls are affected more than boys, with 38 per cent suffering compared to 26 per cent of boys.
The most common form of abuse is forwarding personal messages to a group or putting them online on a website.
One in 10 people had received a threatening SMS, email or instant message, nine per cent had had a rumour about them circulated and six per cent had had embarrassing pictures posted online.
The researchers speculated that the ease of duplication of material lends itself to mass bullying. Users of social networking sites also reported twice the level of bullying than those not registered on such sites.

Users who click fake navigation bars on MySpace profile pages exposed to malicious botnets; several thousands PCs thought to be infected.
The attack is thought to have infected several thousand PCs according to reports from ISPs, said Johannes Ullrich, chief research officer for the SANS Institute. Ullrich has documented the issue on the SANS Internet Storm Center blog.
Criminals have managed to install fake navigation bars on the top of MySpace.com user profile pages that, when clicked, lead to malicious computers that attempt to infect the victim's computer. The attack uses several known Internet Explorer flaws that have been fixed, so users who have installed the latest Microsoft patches are not at risk, security experts said. | Oct. launch planned for `.asia' domain
»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070628/ap_···C3EI1vAI
Internet addresses ending in ".asia" will be open to governments and trademark owners starting in October, with general registrations coming in 2008.
The initial round, which starts Oct. 9, is limited to governments desiring geographical names such as "china.asia" and those with trademarks applied before March 16, 2004, and actively in use. Registrations for other trademarks and for company names begin Nov. 13.
The Internet's key oversight agency for domain names, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, approved the ".asia" domain in October.
DotAsia Organization Ltd., an organization made up of groups that run domain names for China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and other countries, will operate ".asia," which it sought as a way to unify businesses and other users in the Asia-Pacific region.
The organization has said it plans to restrict registrations to those in the region, which includes Australia.
It seems there will be more "REGIONAL" domains like this coming down the pike since ICANN has decided to add more international domains to relieve the pressure being put on them to become less US centric. -- -- Internet News My BLOG My Web Page

| Re: Have a good weekend. I agree 100% on all three counts. My job requires my cell be on for a some hours when I am not there. Otherwise I view it as an electronic leash. So iPhone = iLeash to me with some gizmos added on.
BTW The weather in Philly this weekend is the finest so far this summer. Hope it is wherever DSLR members are too.
