PCWorld published a story that would suggest hacking the device isn't going to take much longer - Hacker: Unlocked iPhones Coming in One Week or Less.

Re: The hacking has only started...

Historically Apple has turned a blind eye to hacking. My guess is they can't officially encourage it, but let's face it, it boosts sales to have a product that can be user modified / adapted.

well, "DVD Jon", we want to wish you good luck with activating your at&t phone w/o using at&t. we personally do not know what your issue is but we had no problem, basicly, man made it, man can break it...

I think Apple has

made the phone where no one will be able to hack it to the point that it will wok will functions on any network. Sure, you may be able to get some stuff to work on another network, but never where it will work 100% the way its supposed to. Apple is just too good to expose such holes.

Where is the SIM unlocker already ?!

Ebay is waiting! There is a LOT of truth in this, boys and girls... This thing is QUAD band GSM so it can go ANYWHERE in the world. If the crack gets out before it launches anywhere else, there will be a lot of WIN for many ebayers.

This just shows that Apple is more like Microsoft than..

If Microsoft pulled this crap, people would be all over Microsoft's case saying that this was typical of them, blah blah. Just goes to show that Apple is more like Microsoft than many of us give credit for. In the end, it's about $$$.

Would this device cost $600 if it DIDN'T have an apple logo on it? of course not.

It isn't even the price tag. It's the fact that they went exclusively with AT&T.

They actually didn't want that. Apple shopped this thing around to everyone and everyone but ATT turned it down. Why? Because Apple controls the customer and makes the final decisions on repairs/replacements.

The wireless company (in this case ATT) can't even do a swap. No matter what the situation, the customer has to let the phone be shipped back to Apple where they make the decision on whether to replace/repair/deny. That can be a huge black eye in the customer service/retention department.

Not to mention, the stores can't even activate the phone. It has to be done through iTunes, at home. Talk about losing control of your subscriber...

It can also be done in-store at an AT&T store or Apple store.

A buddy of mine works for them and he told me that they can't. He said a customer actually came in with his laptop but the stores do not have access to iTunes (the internet is filtered through Dallas or something)

Not sure how they would be able to activate otherwise...

Somhow I highly doubt it. If you were right, Apple would've released the iPhone unlocked.

1. Buy the iPhone from Apple and put in your favorite carrier's SIM in it for BASIC phone functionality (that's make and receive calls, smartphone users).

2. For all other functionality (Ipod, Web, etc) activate it in iTunes.

Problem solved, everyone's happy.

The $600 is a MARKET PRICE. The parts and assembly only cost Apple $200 to make it, and thats with any size memory, whether you get the 6 or 8 gig one. I am glad people are going nutz over it. I just got an idea, and now know that even though the IDEA only costs $50 to produce, I can sell it for $125. Thanks, America, for buying an overpriced "entertainment" piece...

Apple has never given any hint that it cares about its consumers. Near as I can see, the cachet of being a "MacAddict" is that you worship at a superior o.s. and identify with the temple of genius. God, however, has never acknowledged his worshipers.

Sure. DVD Jon has figured out how to get an iPhone to work without phone service. What a genius. Give him a medal.

I am sure everyone will want to go right out and buy a $600 iPhone so that they can have a cellphone without cellphone capability.

Re: Sticking it to the man

From what I have been hearing, the cellphone aspect is its weakest point, unless they dump AT&T.

But, you are right. While it is cool, I would refuse to pay $600 for an IPOD , let alone one w/o cellphone capability.

Re: Sticking it to the man

They shouldn't dump AT&T, rather, they should dump EDGE. GSM/EDGE is yesterday's TDMA. If the phone had GSM/HSDPA 3G, I would have been standing in line for one last weekend.

All you'd need is somebody to make a 3rd-party VoIP app and then you'd have the "phone" aspects back again.

Only while you're connected to wifi. This hack does not enable the cellular capabilities of the device.

The cell phone bit is it's weakest characteristic. Instead they have a super cool iPod/Media Player/Camera/wi-fi internet device.

Who actually "wants" AT&T?

Re: Sticking it to the man

Same here, I've had them for more than 5 years now, and wouldn't dream of changing. It's worked great wherever I've gone. Except at my home, but ahh well. That's what the landline is for. Or, I can just walk out my door. I've tested Verizon in the areas I've traveled, and have seen negligible difference. Of course, either phone was better in some areas than the other, but it felt balanced. This is at least in Maine. I've never had issues with my phone in NY, NJ, FL, GA, MA, NH (except Northern). I live in northern new england, so of course I'll have dead spots...

@covad.net

blame must be shared

i keep hearing the blame put on att...but the fact is att offers both edge and hsdpa..hsdpa being pretty quick in most areas ive been in......so why is it nobody is blaming apple for not including hsdpa support?(maybe to save some production cost? mind you a software update cannot resolve this)...my hermes100 aka att 8525 supports both and lets me tether it to my laptop to use as a internet connection..and it came out last year and is cheaper as well...although i must admit the iphones screen, browser and interface is very nice from the one i bought for my gf..i just expected more for 599$.....but fact is att offers a faster connection..APPLE chose NOT to add support for it in their phone...so blame them as well...ok macfanbois?

Buy and ipod video?

Anyone doing this if retarded if they buy and iphone and don't use it for calls. Just buy and ipod video if you don't want to make calls, or better yet a dell axim or another pda with wm. All the music and video you want and you don't even have to pay extra for the content.
