Copper Thefts, Deaths Continue
$3 per pound means thieves get bolder, dumber...
by Karl Bode Monday 30-Jul-2007 tags: business · hardware · networking · Oddities · AT&T · Verizon
You may want fiber, but rising copper prices continue to make the metal a prime target for thieves, who have started stealing it wherever they can (sometimes with dire consequences). In many cases, thieves have been ripping live telephone wires directly from poles:
Click for full size

More than 1,000 feet of copper cable was stripped from Verizon Northwest poles in the Bald Peak area northwest of Newberg earlier this week, leaving 149 households temporarily without phone service. Thieves working during the night used a vehicle to pull cable loose from two poles, and the tension snapped a third pole off at the base (emphasis added).

Copper is now bringing in more than $3 a pound on the scrap market. In order to reduce related phone and Internet outages, AT&T has started offering rewards for tips leading to the arrest of copper thieves.

It's Darwinian selection in action. Thinning the herd and all that.

Seriously, I sympathize with family of those who are killed, injured or imprisoned. And one can't rule out some cases of economic desperation. But when thieves suffer because they're stealing wires, in some cases wires that are carrying electric power, it's some combination of natural selection and karma.

Just imagine their surprise if they managed to pull down a HV or EHV line (and lived) only to find out it is aluminum and not copper . Same goes if they broke into a sub-station or power plant and stole the wrong reel of wire. Course they'd have to be near a sub-station to find lines like that as most of the distribution to homes and cities is copper.

The lines of high-voltage transmission systems are usually composed of wires of copper, aluminum, or copper-clad or aluminum-clad steel

Not just that, grave markers as well.

Thieves have been making off with vases that are attached to grave markers for some time. Some of them contain copper. Think that's bad? Now they are even taking the whole grave marker!

Recently, my father's entire grave marker was lifted, rather than the just vase. The memorial park had been having problems with the vases disappearing occasionally for years, but with the copper issue, it's not only gotten worse, the thieves are now taking whole plaques. I don't know if it was because it was believed to contain copper as well (my father's was bronze), or if they couldn't cut the chain on the vase. Does it matter? Still sick.

Here's a story about the theft of vases.

Re: Vacant homes being ransacked as well...

copper pipes more often are stolen from vacant homes. i am a contractor & have recieved many a call from a homeowner needing new plumbing so tenants can move in. empty houses are hit hard. its so bad that while workers are rehabbing a house they have to spray paint "no copper, pvc" on the boarded windows just to keep the thieves from trying to get in to steal. its profitable for me, but a huge headache for property owners

Burn Baby Burn!

The more of these guys who fry themselves one power lines the better for the rest off and the gene pool as a whole. Too bad there was no video being made at the time the guy killed himself in Ohio. It probably would have made America's Funniest Video's. I certainly would have been laughing. Forgetting for a moment the fact that it is theft, they are also potentially endangering the lives of people who are dependent on electricity such as those who are on life support. Not to mention the rest of us with refrigerators or freezer who would lose a substantial investment in food due to spoilage in a power outage.

Let all these copper thieves die.

Loosen up, sometimes this stuff is just funny. We had a guy from around here die by rolling off a 4 story roof up in Columbia. They found him and a naked girl on the sidewalk with their clothes up on the roof. Terrible accident but it has to make you grin a little. Would it make you or anyone else feel better if he slipped in the tub and hit head? I would rather roll off the roof with the naked girl even if people thought it was funny.

In the case of these morons, they have zero respect for life (and death) themselves otherwise they would not be endangering the lives of people who depend on electricity (and forget about their own lives). I have zero regards for the lives of these people as I am sure they could care less about my life and the problems they might cause in doing what they do. If they leave a family behind, perhaps they should have thought about that before grabbing that copper line charged at 13.8KV.

Personally I would recommend Copper from the 34,500kv Primary Feeders.

It's closer to the ground, not behind any fences, and gives the best 'BANG' for the buck.

Reminds me of Carl Rowan:
"Rowan gained public notoriety on June 14, 1988, when he shot a teenage tresspasser, Neil Smith, who was taking a dip in Rowan's swimming pool in Washington, D.C.. Rowan used an unregistered .22 LR pistol. Critics charged hypocrisy, since Rowan was a strict gun control advocate. In a 1981 column, he advocated " a law that says anyone found in possession of a handgun except a legitimate officer of the law goes to jail -- period." In 1985, he called for "A complete and universal federal ban on the sale, manufacture, importation and possession of handguns (except for authorized police and military personnel)." [2] [3]

Immediately after the shooting, Rowan offered several conflicting accounts about where he got the handgun. He first said that he had purchased the gun himself in response to threats on his life (which he later claimed had been made by the Ku Klux Klan). He also initially claimed that the gun had been properly registered. However, when District of Columbia police disclosed that the gun had not been registered, Rowan changed his story, claiming that the gun belonged to his son, who "was an FBI agent and did not have to register it [because it was] properly registered federally." Police officials pointed out that under D.C. law, all guns must be registered locally; failure to do so was punishable by up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine.

Rowan was tried but the jury was deadlocked, the judge declared a mistrial and he was never retried. In his autobiography, Rowan said he still favors gun control, but admits being vulnerable to a charge of hypocrisy [4]."

How do they draw this conclusion?

Quote: "According to law enforcement officials, the price of copper has been soaring, making it an ever-more attractive target for thieves who are typically trying to feed a drug addiction. Iron and other metals also have been going up in price, though not by as much, they say, and members of the drug culture have taken notice."

How do they draw the conclusion that people who steal copper are (generalyl) trying to get drugs? That seems like a fairly blanket statement with no proof. This upsets me.

Geee some guy comes in with 1000 feet of 500 pair copper. Don't they even wonder a little bit where it came from? At most I see the copper thief burning the insulation off of the copper but they still know what it is. I doubt they are taking the copper in in a neatly melted down block.

I have seen an example of theft of fiber optic cable in a new FTTP neighborhood. Poor idiots probably thought it was copper. What a surprise when they did not find much copper when they burned the sheath of that stolen cable. It plainly stated optical cable on the outside, but I suppose reading is not a requirement to be a thief.

This really does keep the gene pool clear of debris. We have had a few local individuals, one pair of brothers, get fried for stealing copper wire, well the attempt to steal it,it was not a overall success as you can imagine. At least those two guys didn't pass on those genes to anyone else, at least in the paper they did not allude to them leaving any child or wives behind.
What really prompts them to cut in 10K volt power lines, this is truly Darwin's theory at work.

Got my copper... :)

My company just ripped out a small load of copper from an old network to make way for a new network at one of our clients. The guy who was working with me asked me where he should put it in the dumpster. I promptly correctly the youngster and informed him that the copper we had collected that day was probably worth about $30. We still have more to remove.

As usual, its going to the back of my car, to the scrap yard and I'm going to buy a case of some good beer with the money... Imported European beer.
