Municipal Wi-Fi saves meter readers from dog attacks

Earlier this year, the media in Corpus Christi pointed out that the major benefits of the city’s Wi-Fi system were being seen by city workers. The workers that weren’t specifically mentioned were meter readers, but a new Information Week article pays them their due homage. The article points out that EarthLink recently dedicated the municipal system which was inspired to launch after a meter reader was attacked by a dog. The system wasn’t originally intended for residents but those savvy folks started piggybacking on the network and that’s around the time that EarthLink got involved. Now Corpus Christi residents can pay to use the system. Of course, the system has some gaps so discussions are in the air about whether or not WiMax could be used to fill in those gaps.

Re: umm

Haha, yeah, I did a double take there for a second. Thought I had my geography wrong, because I was pretty sure that Corpus was south of Houston.

It's on the Internet though, so it must be right.

It is a generic logo of Texas used by the BBR news writer. I doubt it was meant to show where Corpus Christi is.

Does this make you happier :

Wretched network..

historically anyway. WiFi deployments like this often fail miserably overall. The typical consumer doesn't understand why their wifi card isn't getting service inside their house under the oak & palm trees.

If the consumer understands that in some places an external antenna or a nice Ruckus unit is needed, things may be different.

Interesting Fact...

That the gulf coast folks have been neglected by the telcos for this long. The community does not have 100% DSL coverage by at&t. Their excuse? Lack of interest. Bottom line is that folks do NOT know that DSL can be had if they apply pressure to the right places.

It is a painful existence for folks that are accustomed to high speed service, only to come down here and wind up getting the dregs of the system. Maybe getting 1/2 to 3/4 of what their original service offered.

I'm glad that the muni Wifi project got completed instead of getting set aside like most of the infrastructure improvement projects get locally. Pity it's going to cost the users a small copper to run on.
