Training documents note August 19 launch...Qwest denies...
(old news - 06:30PM Tuesday Aug 14 2007)

Qwest appears to be training employees in preparation for a broader deployment of fiber to the node and VDSL or ADSL2+ technology, according to documents obtained by Broadband Reports. The documents refer to a new service internally dubbed "IP Broadband," which will be deployed first on August 19 in Denver, Phoenix and Colorado Springs.

Later launch markets include Seattle, Minneapolis, Albuquerque, Portland, Salt Lake City and Des Moines. According to the training material, the service will be available to 8% of Qwest customers by the end of 2007 and 24% of Qwest's customers by the end of 2008.

The documents highlight a product that will offer speeds and prices in line with existing DSL service (1.5-7Mbps) for the time being. "They probably will offer higher speeds eventually," says an insider. "But its going to be 'wait and see.'"

We contacted Qwest to confirm, but according to spokesperson Johnna Hoff, the company has no plans to announce any new FTTH, ADSL2+ or FTTN deployment. "Nor do we plan to name any service 'IP Broadband,'" says Hoff. "As with all of Qwest's broadband-related services, though, we continually examine areas for service deployment."

Qwest currently offers fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) technology in areas
of Phoenix and Denver and FTTH technology in a few development communities in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Washington. Our insider insists this launch is "bigger then [sic] the last attempts at VDSL/FTTH since it's more widespread."

Another insider tells us that the technology being used here is ADSL2+, the rollout date for deployment has been consistently delayed over the past year, and the launch date could easily be delayed again. The technology may, or may not be ultimately be used to deliver IPTV, a concept that Qwest has publicly been very luke warm towards.

WTG..

Way to go, Qwest....actually doing something that may divert your path off the AOL bandwagon...

Now if someone in your organization can come up with any halfway decent name...you would be set...

"IP Broadband"...wtf? Let's just call it "RJ45 Connection"!

Re: WTG..

I had to laugh when i saw upload speeds of 896kbps Or higher.
Doesn't qwest know 896kbps is the technology limit for ADSL.
FTTN/FTTH??? why bother as they got it capped at a low 5mbps(DSL can do 5mbps * y a w n *)

Re: WTG..

they use FTTN so that they can move the switching station to areas its not in and use a subpanel.
I live in Cave Creek and qwest just changed out t1 out for vdsl 7mg FTTN. we live nowere near a switching station and FTTN lets them place subpannels acting as switching stations so please QQ someplace else.

896kbps is not the upload limit for ADSL2+, which is what was mentioned in the article. The limit for ADSL2+ is around 24Mbps down / 1.2Mbps up, and around 2.7Mbps up with Annex M capable equipment (most newer ADSL2+). Another benefit of ADSL2+ over standard ADSL is that loop bonding is available to essentially double the speeds.

@johnatencio.com
I have 1000kbps up from Qwest now that is why Im with them now.

I'll believe it when I see it

I live in the heart of Phoenix and can't even get DSL from them. Not that I would want a measly 1.5 connection from them. Hopefully this is true because Cox is kicking their ass all over the valley.

Surely you're joking! Cox barely covers the valley. Cox told me that cable would be available in 1996. It still isn't here.

1.5Mbps always the max for remote terminals?

Most of us out outside of the cities can only get 1.5Mbps, will this help us? Or is this for cities only?

Rumor has it (at least for SLC), 'Cherry Picks' only.

Good with words

the company has no plans to announce any NEW ftth or fttn deployment. "Nor do we plan to name any service 'IP Broadband,'" says Hoff.

of course you have no new plans for ftth or fttn because you already deploy that service, how about do you have any plans to expand your service starting Aug 19th. IP broadband is of course a preliminary term for internal use only, obviously your marketing dept will come up with a clever little name. Again I would ask do you have an internal training program named IP Broadband?

Second Verse, Same as the first.

This would be news if it was NOT in Denver, Phoenix or Colorado Springs.

How much longer are you going to let the Telechoice network in Omaha degrade?

I have a fiber fed RT 3 blocks away.

Make is useful already!

I've posted this once and I'll post it again...

the big three's approach to next-generation service:

Verizon: At least we're trying (in your area, even, if you're lucky).

AT&T: VDSL ought to be enough for everyone.

Qwest: What? Me worry?

New service

Qwest talked about this very briefly in their ISP conference call a week ago. The first iteration didn't allow competitive ISP's on the network, future ones are supposed to.

I was surprised to hear that Qwest is going to let 3rd party ISP's on the network now that the RBOC's aren't required to let competitors use their DSL services.

Re: New service

Believe it or not, Qwest likes to wholesale their services as well as retail. Easy money, fewer company employees to pay.

VDSL in PHX

I have Qwest's VDSL service in phoenix, and all I can say is the service is great. I get a consistent 3M down and 1M up. I used to have COX and when everyone comes home from work the speeds drop greatly, no issues with Qwest.

I run a web and exchange server out of my house, they don't block any ports and all IPs have reverse DNS capabilities. Cox blocked every port you would ever want to use.

I have been waiting for their IPTV service to get DVR boxes before I move to that.

This upgrade is great news I would love to see a speed increase or static ip address like you can get with their ADSL service.

They sure are rolling out something here in Colorado Springs

New Qwest cable is being laid all over the Springs for the last 3-4 months. Big fat pipes? What the heck else could it be--POTS? I sure think not!

I would love to switch from Comcast and I have a DSL modem already.
