story category Wesley Clark: P2P a National Security Threat
Oh, by the way, this company that pays me has the solution...
(old news - 04:05PM Tuesday Aug 14 2007)
tags: security · privacy · software · networking
Last month, Congress started targeting p2p as a national security threat because government employees weren't bright enough to avoid sharing folders with confidential material. The result of that brainstorming session is apparently a plan by General Wesley Clark to regulate p2p software and distributed computing:
"If you saw the scope of the risk, I think you'd agree that it's just totally unacceptable. The American people would be outraged if they were aware of what's inadvertently shared by government agencies on P2P networks. They would demand solutions."
Such as forcing government employees not to be stupid? P2P Weblog notes that Clark is a board member for Tiversa, a company that sells "file sharing risk assessment and monitoring services," which explains his enthusiasm.

Wow...

This general is an idiot instead of changing how people can access the restricted files they want to control the software!

Agreed. Another corrupt politician attempting to line his own pocket through FUD and misinformation. Why doesn't this moron simply recommend that all government-related networks and systems simply be "locked down" so that all known P2P traffic is not allowed? Why do they allow people to connect to P2P networks from government offices in the first place??

Unfortunately it's not just politicians. Lining pockets through FUD and misinformation is traits also of lawyers, businessmen, and clergy. It's been that way for centuries.

I doubt if he is an idiot. If you would have taken time to read the blurb you would have realized that he is actually rather clever - "P2P Weblog notes that Clark is a board member for Tiversa, a company that sells "file sharing risk assessment and monitoring services," which explains his enthusiasm".

You need to be careful how you randomly throw the term "idiot" around, just because you do not agree with what he is doing does not make him an idiot. A greedy conniving *insert favorite derogatory term* maybe, but not an idiot. Only an idiot would fail to see the profit potential.

What?

If they so concerned about security, then just do not allow installing those applications on company's computers. It seems that a lot of universities and colleges can do it but the government can't...

Oh, wait a minute... Is a security concern just a picked up reason to shut P2P down? It seems to me...

The admins are too over worked and / or there is too much red tape to be able to lock things down.

Re: What?

I've done some subcontracting for some gov't agencies that weren't even able to share files across the room. They had been relegated to manually duplicating things or relying on sneaker-net on the few pc's with active floppy drives.

Ill go with the pure incompetence, coupled with more ulterior motives for 200 Alex.

Phooey!

General Wesley Clark
Oh here we go, the Department of Veterans Affairs has had this sort of thing blocked for many years. Some people are idiots I play with my home system but I never play on the PC I work with at the hospital. I am safe-guarding thousands of Social Security numbers and personal medical information, I take the protection of this information very, very seriously. I don't need some crap General bone head to tell me about security

WTF....

I'm not sure but I think it's probably a bad idea for an active duty general to serve on the board of a tech corporation.

Yes, you are right.

BUT, Wesley Clark is retired. And has been since May 2, 2000.
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wesley_Cla···tirement

The story should mention that he is a retired General. Otherwise, it is misleading.

You know... more and more of these people seem to be sponsored by someone. I think that we should just end the facade and make them wear jackets or outfits like Nascar and other sports, with their sponsors on them.

At least it would make it easier to know who supports them, and vis a vers a.

It's the government way!

Why change procedures to eliminate a basic problem when you can just throw more money at an ineffective "solution"?

Ban use of the telephone as well

If Gvt employees cannot avoid letting confidential materials out on P2P networks then how can they be trusted to use the telephone as well? I say ban Gvt use of telephones as a matter of urgency!

Seriously is this ex General losing it? A spot of training and a better IT approach would solve most problems.

We don't need no stinking security....

With all of the security features that are out there today - Group Policy, router/firewall ACLs, Network Access Control, etc - the government IT folks have no excuse.

I mean, seriously, my clients have more secure networks than the government it seems. We've got group policy on most systems locked down so boneheaded users can't fuck up their machines. We've already got ACLs on their routers to stop Limewire, Kazaa and others to so that some employee with an MP3 fetish can't saturate their internet links. And the kicker is, most of these clients have less than 100 employees.

Rediculous... The government, with all its resources can't spend the time and money protecting important data like employee records, but they sure as hell can find the money to build bridges to nowhere in Alaska, or even worse, pay raises for do-nothing, know-nothing Senators, Representatives, Presidents and Vice-Presidents...

Edit: Oh yeah, and watch now... Someone on the Hill, politically connected to one of these P2P monitoring/security companies is going to be raking in the cash shortly when their buddies get the contract to provide software/hardware to the government. Just watch.

Our Own Security

Why not focus on your own security?.

More importantly why are the system administrators allowing this software to be installed on Government, *cough-secure-cough* computers. Why are no internet filters in place to block such software. This is a failure of LEADERSHIP.

The employee's (government officials) should know full well that its wrong to install p2p software on work computers (and likely against policy) and if they are found to be using such software at work FIRE THEM.

Problem solved.

Hmmm. Seems to me ...

... That "Idiot Government Employeees" are a National Security threat! Starting from the top down!

I mean come on, seriously. "Hmmm... I'm on a PC that has access to sensitive files.... Let's install Limewire on it and set all drives to Public!"

Idiots. Firewall and PC software audits FTW....
