How far would you go to get out of your wireless contract?
(old news - 11:58AM Saturday Aug 18 2007)
tags: business · wireless · consumers · Verizon
Tipped by grobinette See Profile
Most people simply accept the fact that getting a cell phone requires signing up for a two year contract with the provider. Corey Taylor isn’t most people; he recently faked his death to get out of his Verizon Wireless contract. The FCC is seeing an increasing number of complaints about cell phone contracts as customers get tired of the lack of flexibility that companies offer. Changes are being made, with some companies pro-rating cancellation fees and others offering flexibility to people who are moving or who want to change their plans. But for now, most people are still locked in to what they signed up for.

A felony for $175?

The article is devoted to breaking cell contracts, but doesn't mention that the guy actually committed a felony. (or 2) and roped his friend into helping him, making it a conspiracy. Not exactly the best plan.

You stole my thunder, man.

This guy not only committed a felony forgery by submitting the forged certificate itself. He committed a felony by just making it.

One could go so far as charging him with impersonating a public servant when he applied the forged signature of the medical examiner on the phony cert.

The real story here should be about how this guy managed to not land in court....

My contract is up next month . I plan on going month to month for a while. I've got the notorious E 815. OK phone, as long as the charge port holds up. I had to get a refurb replacement a few months ago, so I think I'll hold on to it for a while and go month to month....

I wish Nextel would've done that for me when I was with them 2 years ago.

When I first got my Nextel, it worked OK, but they went downhill fast.

Where I'm at (Philly 'burbs) Verizon is nothing short of excellent. Coverages is excellent pretty much wherever I go....

Nope, you're not, at my house in Redwood Valley (and in many areas in Mendocino and Lake Counties here in NW Calif) Verizon is horrible, thank goodness for in-market roaming onto US Cellular.

I got out of my T-mobile contract due to poor service in my areas. Even their online map showed my area was a poor service area.

Been there done that. I have canceled verizon before, used a zipcode in Maine. The cell service is so spotty you only can get analog, and have to drive to the top of a mountain for it. If you sneeze you lose the signal.

its all part of the system.

if you dont like the system, dont buy into it in the first place. many companies now offer contract free plans..

and it you dont mind the idea of a contract, but rather the length, companies like tmobiles contract lengths are more like 1 year rather than two.

How about some examples of 'many companies' plus prove that they have more coverage than just one state.

Like... this?
Virgin Mobile is on Sprint PCS... NO Raoming charges either!

Q. Does Virgin Mobile coverage include roaming?

A.With Virgin Mobile, there is no roaming. No roaming means no roaming charges.

You can use your Virgin Mobile phone anywhere in Virgin Mobile and extended digital coverage areas across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

If you leave our coverage area, all your text messages will be saved for up to 72 hours. Voicemail messages will be saved until you return.

Austin, Texas? Sure!

I know Virgin is a good deal but what I was saying was there are very few carriers out there that don't require the 2 yr contract (which sucks).

Now, Virgin, T-mobile, and sprint can't even be options for me due to were some of my friends and family live.

Technically, att wireless doesn't even work at my parents house however I still have to switch carriers.

Re: its all part of the system.

T-Mobile doesnt offer contracts either for the same service. They offer a service called FlexPay. Use the same phones, same services- including Fav5 and just pay monthly. You buy the phone you want plus one month up front but hey no contract and you get the same services and coverage.

People can pay full price for the phone and not buy into a contract. But people are so into "free" phones or "cheap" ones, they will go 2 years and bitch all the way. So, to those people I say, pay 600 bucks for that treo and shut up.

It would not be a felony charge for $175. It would be for creating a forged instrument, in this case a false death certificate and then using it to commit fraud. The fact that the amount it was used to scam was $175 is irrelevant.

I used to have a T-mobile post paid account with like 350 min.. but I got pissed because for one I never talk that long on the phone period so my $29 bill after taxes and T-zones was like $50ish a month.. I was like no way.. I use T-mobile to go.. and I talk a lot on my VOIP line.

Virgin Mobile isn't minutes... it's money.
I can bu yringtones, background pics, screensavers... whatever!

On my plan, $0.18 per minute ANYTIME.
I can change that to a monthly charge and get calls for $0.10... or any one of the other monthly plans.

ETF? No! Toss the phone or just never Top it up and that's that!

*FOR ME* this was the best out there.

Re: How far would you go to get out of your wireless contract?

Or, you can get the SERO plan, hehheheh. I LOVE my service. I hear people say "Sprint sucks" all the time, but I love them. Unlimited text messages, 500 anytime minutes, fair and flexible plan, unlimited after 7pm and weekends, and unlimited web access without eating up minutes, no "per kb" charge. If I go over on my minutes, I only pay $5 for an additional 300 minutes... I like it, because I have yet to go over on usage. I have great coverage, and I am usually averaging about 400 minutes during anytime minutes, and 1100 on nights and weekends. about 600 text messages. Lord knows what my data usage is, but it's alot... I can only speak for what works for me, and Verizon was close to $76 a month for 450 anytime, 9pm nights and weekends, 500 text, and unlimited data. I am paying 1/3rd the cost of my Verizon phone. I DO miss my Verizon PHONE, but mostly because it had great sound. My Motorola Q has good sound too, but not as much midrange as my LG VX8300. And the pictures my VX8300 took were better. I am too cheap to buy a digital camera, so I tote the VX8300 with me when I need a camera, lol. There was also a few things I could do with my VX8300 that I can't with my Q, one of which is hack the dang thing. It was super easy to hack the LG.

only downside to that is minutes expire.
I have t-mobile prepaid and 1000 minutes would last me waaaaaaaay longer than a year if they didn't expire.
how many minutes does virgin give you for $20 dadkins?

Re: How far would you go to get out of your wireless contract?

They don't. I have $20.00 to burn through any way I see fit.

Currently, calls cost me $0.18 ANYTIME - 24/7
I can make that $0.10 if I want to change plans... but for as little as I use a phone... $0.18 anytime is ok.

The money doesn't expire as long as you "Top Up" every three months with $20(or more).

Works out well here.

I hardly use it, so I pretty much always end up running into the 3 month limit rather than out of money. Still, other companies require you to put in money every 60 days and charge more per minute.
Warning, they block ringtone and application downloads that are not from them if you buy their internet plan. I didn't know this before purchasing, but it does state on their site that it's not possible.

Less than $7.00 per month for a working cell... I can deal with it!

I'll burn the money on ringtones or internet... or just text it all away(that's alot of texting, but hey!)

But Verizon doesnt play fair, if you change any option or your plan they extend it another 2yrs. How is that far, the equipment you purchased is still aging. Once you sign a contract the max it should be allowed is 2 yrs, even if you change your plan or features. Hence why i avoid Verizon.

You go in to a store with your unlocked phone, and try signing up "free of contract". You will still be thrown in a 2 year contract or at best 1 year.

Get out of a Cell Phone contract

»consumerist.com/consumer/cellpho···lations/

1. Sell your cellphone contract.

2. Complain that service isn't up to par, file complaints with PUC, FTC, BBB, AG and cc them to the company.

3. Wait for the company to change its rates (like text-messaging), then call to cancel based on the material change of contract. These are usually for the default rates and you won't be able to cancel if you have a package that takes care of it... hint: so get rid of the package and call back

4. Move to an area outside the plan's coverage area.

5. Join the armed forces - you'll need to fax in a copy of your orders.

6. Die - someone will need to fax in your death certificate on your behalf. You'll be dead, but at least you're in heaven.

if you're canceling, you should have a reason..

i've gotten out of several contracts over the years with reasoning behind it. it's all about talking to the right people and knowing how to talk to them. screaming and cursing will get you no where. speak calmly and be understanding. if you're unhappy with the service, explain that. if the rep can't do anything (usually can't) than ask to speak to a manager. if you know what you're doing you'll be out of the contract...

no need to fake your death..

Set phone to roaming

Wasn't Sprint canceling people who roam to much. Just set the phone to digital roam and talk away. They will gladly cancel you.

I think they do have a clause in the TOS so they can cancel you out.

Roaming-Included Plans: Not available with single-band phones, or to customers residing outside an area covered by the Nationwide Sprint PCS Network. Sprint may terminate service if (1) more than 800 minutes, (2) a majority of minutes or (3) a majority of data kilobytes in a given month are used while roaming.
Wasn't people getting canceled do to excess calls to customer support for credits for drop calls.

Re: Yet Another Reason

Here here,

Altough on my last trip to China (shenzhen) I caved and bought a Moto W220 with a prepaid Sim Card with China Mobile service. It's been a lifesaver at work here and the service is cheap....
Free incoming everything..period-text, calls, etc...
talking---0.39RMB/min=$0.05/min no roaming and 0.59RMB=$0.07/min when roaming which is never when on the state partially owned cell system.

Totally anonymous too. I got a phone +sim card +200RMB of talk time for ~$75USD.

I've enjoyed the convenience so much that I am considering getting a cell phone in the US, but noone seems to provide a similar deal like I got in China. I mean really is it so hard to unlock a phone and let people pick the service they want, and allow them to drop it in an instant if they so choose?

I was stuck on the runway in Taiwan last night and my phone worked even though it wasn't supposed to and i was able call ahead and delay my arrival at my hotel by 12 hours.

And before people call me a commie loving pinko (based on my pro Chinese people [not gov't] posts recently), yeah I love my travels and time here in the Far East. I'm still a proud meat, potatoes, pizza, and football (the manly kind, not that crap where you can't use your hands or pummel people) kinda guy.

Just wanted to share how the other half lives while our free country is stifled by unabated corporate greed, and the lack of a cohesive FU by us to the American providers. Although Helio (which is owned by sprint?) seems somewhat ok.

Do you have to get contractn???

I thought you could get just a regular plan without deals and not need a contract. Buy your own phone off ebay or craigslist. You don't need your nighttime hours to start at 6 or 7p. I have been rolling with sprint for years w/o contract and my plan is better than anything they can offer.

The "new" AT&T...

We have this. We're happy with our service. But I've heard that there were so many problems with the transition that they would let you out of the deal if you called them up and asked.

Is there any truth to that?

The one thing I think should be changed with all cellphone companies is the fact that your contract ups for another two years every time you get an upgrade. I think the contract should be standalone and separate from the upgrade. I feel like those being tied together put the customer at an unfair disadvantage.

Of course if I understand it right, to get around that you just put your old sim in your new phone. So the hook is in activating your new sim, not getting your new upgrade phone.

Is that right?

In some cases even Death doesn't help...

A friend of mine had a Verizon family plan - her and her 2 parents. Both parents were diagnosed with cancer a week apart and both died within a year. She tried to terminate the family plan, but no dice. Decided it was cheaper to pay the bill thru the remainder of the contract than pay the cancellation fees (Which by the way were not waived under the circumstances).

It's not that way everywhere!

I spend a lot of time in Hong Kong. Over there, back and forth:

1. It is illegal to lock a phone to a carrier.

2. All phones are sold unlocked and most are sold at phone shops or dedicated shops like Nokia, Motorola, etc. You get your phone from a phone shop and then go decide who you want for a carrier.

3. It is illegal for a carrier to demand a contract for service that is over 30 days long.

4. You do, of course, have to pay for your phone just as you pay for your computer and then determine who your ISP is going to be.

5. Don't like your carrier, change. It takes 10-15 minutes. Don't like your phone, go buy a new one. Very simple...

I have a Nokia tri-band GSM I bought there, I got my service here from T-Mobile with NO contract, when I go over there, I simply put my Hong Kong SIM card in the phone on the flight and when I get there, I have a live Hong Kong phone. When I return here, I simply change it back to my T-Mobile SIM card.

The main problem here is everyone is addicted to a so called free phone (that's a joke) so I guess you get what you pay for and the carriers just love to get you addicted.

1. It is illegal to lock a phone to a carrier.

Untrue. H.K. carriers seem to subsidy-lock their BlackBerries. If a law prevented subsidy-locking handsets, then this wouldn't be possible. I did check for the law on the Bilingual Laws Information System, it doesn't seem to exist.

2. All phones are sold unlocked and most are sold at phone shops or dedicated shops like Nokia, Motorola, etc. You get your phone from a phone shop and then go decide who you want for a carrier.

In most cases, this is true.

3. It is illegal for a carrier to demand a contract for service that is over 30 days long.

This isn't reflected by the Bilingual Laws Information System made available for perusal by the public in Hong Kong. At any rate, "demanding" a contract is much different than offering it so the customer may accept it.

4. You do, of course, have to pay for your phone just as you pay for your computer and then determine who your ISP is going to be.

Unless you wish to have a subsidized handset. These ARE offered in Hong Kong WITH CONTRACT. That thing you alluded to being unavailable or even illegal in Hong Kong does, in fact, exist. 3G handsets, in particular, are available at a discount (sometimes significant or free) with contract. You see this all the time with 3/Hutchison and their LG handsets. They are even 3-branded!

5. Don't like your carrier, change. It takes 10-15 minutes. Don't like your phone, go buy a new one. Very simple...

It really depends on what services you want, and what type of terms you require. Some people actually want a contract in Hong Kong. Standing in line for 30 minutes, sure... it may take 15 minutes MINIMUM to get your service activated and ready to go if you're also buying a new handset. This is if you aren't going prepaid, of course.

Sometimes there's a loophole

There was a loophole for Nextel customers, allowing them to migrate (not port) their account over to Boost Mobile's prepaid service without incurring an ETF.
Once you were on Boost, you could port out to another carrier or let your account be canceled after 90 days of inactivity.
I took advantage of this two months ago and saved myself $200.
Unfortunately, I think they recently plugged this loophole.

A few ways out + alternatives

A few ways out...

1. Break the ToS (typically excessive roaming, or obscene data usage/tethering)
2. Move to an area that they don't provide service (extreme)
3. Why use a contract... go prepaid and avoid it... or once your contract expires, stay month to month.

I do agree that wireless comapanies are near the bottom of the food chain (according to the article), however, I think the airlines are much worse. FedEx'ing myself it preferable to the airlines these days.

til death do us part

I have been with sprint for the past 7 years and i have never had any problems suspending service at no charge and never having a contract because you can pay $10.00 more on your bill to be month to month.

We did it (sorta)

When my grandparents passed away we used their Death Certs to get out of our sprint pcs contract. You gotta do what you gotta do

I got ouf of sprint

Only by being shipped to Iraq. Even that was a major pain in the ass to accomplish. They originally told me I had to fax my orders to them, and I laughed. Finally, they said ok, they will turn it off and let me out of the contract.

The solution for everyone is to tell them you are moving overseas. They DON'T have service there, and will let you out of your contract.

Sprint sucked anyway.

why not charge MORE for the phone?

Just stop the stupid "discounting" of the phone, increase
the price of the phone, and have no contract. Just unlock
the phone, give us a competitive rate and be done with all
this BS.
The #1 reason I by unlocked phones is because I don't want to
be tied to a $!@%$ contract.

Re: why not charge MORE for the phone?

I agree carriers need to be separated from there phones. The GSM spec was specifically designed to provide that. I would rather pay full price, and not have a contract. They be locked in forever.
