Major retailers want you to
(old news - 01:53PM Sunday Aug 19 2007)
tags: Video · wireless
With video becoming increasingly popular on cell phones, there’s a new market for video clip advertising. A market being explored by major advertisers is the use of interactive advertising, such as using the phone to search for the nearest retail market of the item being advertised. Mobile advertising is particularly popular in Japan where there are predictions that the amount of advertising expenditures will triple to over $1 billion by 2011.

Re: uh

Better yet...
Phones will be required to have/use data, or pay penalties (this is already happening... many discounts on equipment require subscription to media/data packages).

I'm glad to have a corp discount plan, which doesn't require any bundled data BS to get a reasonable price on a new handset.

That's exactly why everyone should get their cell numbers on the "Don't Call" list.

When were the numbers sold? And what are these charges to have some sort of calls not sent to your phone?

A green phone then?

Seriously, I'm still looking for the cell phone that's just a phone. No texting, email, web, ringtones, camera, or other junk, just talk.

It's kinda like the Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot and honest politicians.

Re: uh

You're not going to find one that has no texting, email, web or ringtones, but, you can probably find one that has no camera, don't buy a plan for texting, email, web or ringtones and set the ringtone to a standard ring sound, and just don't use the other features.

The market has moved away from the phone you're wanting, and it'd be such a niche market that your phone probably won't be created.

OK, very funny. It's not the inclusion of the other things that I mind, it's that you have to be careful to avoid pushing the wrong button to avoid getting charged for something unwanted. What I'd like to see is phones that the user can control and decide what to run on them.

But yeah, they'll probably charge you one way for ads and another way for no ads.

Re: uh

A new beta version of the iPhone might be fore you.

There's a beta right now of an iPhone that is JUST a phone and a media player.

It has a screen for the keypad and to display video, and to act as the "circle" interface for the iPod..and that's it. No web, no mail, no camera, it's about 1/2 the width of the existing iPhone and about 2/3rds the over all size.

It's may be out sometime in the future (June 08) and it may not. Think of it more like an iPod with a phone...than a phone with an iPod.

When I started with Verizon Prepaid a couple years ago, I got a very basic Audiovox phone that had no text, web, camera, or anything fancy. It even had a plain monocrhome screen. When I switched to T-Mo Prepaid, I started out with a Samsung X495 which had no web and no camera, but had the ability to purchase wallpapers and ringtones from T-Zones. It also had IM (AOL, Yahoo, or ICQ. Could only log onto one at a time).

Yeah, I'm staying away from Video, Internet, and music on cell phones. I do mainly conversation, but I also do a limited amount of text messaging, and occasionally use VZ Navigator. I like text messaging because its unobtrusive; so if I'm trying to get a message to someone who's in a meeting, texting is a good way to do that without interrupting the whole meeting. I also think that being able to use my cell phone to get driving directions is a great tool in a pinch.

Or they'll charge $.15 per received ad. Of course, there is the option to sign up for the 100 ad package for $2.99/mo or the unlimited ad package at a mere $5.99/mo.

Ain't that the truth. Here's my question though, will you be charged for seeing the ads because I know many carriers charge customers for video clips and such.

It reminds me of back when telemarketers would call cell phone numbers to sell their products. Because it is treated like a cell phone call, the minutes would be used up. Now, it is illegal for telemarketers to call cell phone numbers because there was numerous complaints by cell phone customers. I can see cell phone video advertising going the same way.

Re: No thanks

Ok, a bit overboard with the "charge to see ad's". I know I get messages from my cell provider (well, I used to with Cingular, but not with Sprint). When THEY send you the message, it's free. Just like calling 611, which is FREE! Geez, haven't you folks EVER received a message from your provider? The bill says 611 is free also, and usually the text messages the provider sends is labeled "free" at the bottom of the message.

And to the dude who said "no text plan, and just don't use it", heh, try having someone text you by accident, and you'll know why THEY don't want all that junk on their phone. I myself have FREE unlimited text messages as part of my $30 a month plan. Oh well.

My vote is no.

No. But my opinion counts for nothing since I don't own a cell phone and never will. But there are already too many conduits for advertising. When will it be enough that people will get angry about it? I'm already there.

If this brings the services in the level of free.. sure...

Might be a good idea for letting people on a pre-paid account surf the web. Get a few ads, but dont pay a dime. If it's just a way to suck up more metered bandwidth and charge us more. Hell no.

Idiot Telcos

What fuckwit at the telcos thought up this drivel. It's already prohibited by law that they can't just arbitrarily beam any kind of unsolicited text message to consumer mobile phones, but now these assclowns are trying to get around that law by transmitting video. Anyone who has a cell phone should contact the FCC ASAP and let them know precisely how you feel about unsolicited video to a mobile phone that you're footing the bandwidth bill.

Really? I didn't know you could do that with a cell phone.

Seriously, I am with you on this. I do use text messaging a lot, however, but other than that, I only want my phone to make and receive phone calls. I even have a standard ring tone which actually helps me tell my phone apart from anyone else's just because mine is not a fancy song or whatever.

I do ask myself what is the real value of watching video in such small screens? Same thing as web surfing. My phone has a (limited) web browser but I rarely use that other than to get some quick information such as movie times or things like that but only when I am away from my computer at home and need the info at the moment. E-mail can wait until I get home.

Yep. Spam blockers and pop-up blockers work well for computers, huh?
Sure, why not find another way to charge people $29.95 for MORE useless, ineffective software.
Next thing you know, they'll be showing countless ads at the movies.
Oh wait, they already do that.
Ok, next thing you know, stores will have ads on the food seperators or on the floors.
Dangit, they do that too.
Uhm, here's one: they'll put ads on the parking spaces at the mall.
Grrrr. they do that too.
Ad placements in videos, movies, tv shows.
Done.
I expect our currency will have ads in them soon. I may be on to something here. Perhaps we can solve the national debt and SS issues all in one swoop. we can change the motto to "In Wal-Mart we trust", for a hefty fine, of course.
Or, are we already doing that too?

According to 'some' posters, if you don't you are stealing

Remember, if you don't accept video ads on your phone, you are STEALING. You think those ads are created for free? There's a lot of people whose livelihood depend on the 'consumer' watching those ads. If you block them, or even worse, don't accept them, then you are stealing. It's just like web browsing, if you block ads you are stealing!

OH DAMN, I cracked the LCD on my phone, now I get to miss out on all that Advertising I was waiting to watch.

What can you do??? Accidents like this happen all the time.

Same way my DVR remote is broken.

The FF button always sticks in during commercials, so I have to smack the remote against my foot to get it to go back to Play, and I end up missing all the commercials, even the interesting GEICO ones.

Some of us have all the rotten luck.

My truck has had a problem for years, the sun visors are always getting in the way of the roadside billboards. I really need to sue GM to fix them under a recall.

I guess I can't drive on those roads anymore because someone might accuse me of stealing.

Well then my Sidekick3 is illegal. It goes to a proxy for its internet service which makes websites more 'sidekick friendly' and fit the screen. I browse the net more on my phone then my PC because it blocks almost all ads.

Better then dealing with the flashing banners and popup ads with sound..

Selective viewing is what I call it.

One way to defeat that is to get an unlocked phone.

Another (theoretical) way is to hack the phone and change settings, but if it's possible I don't know how.

YES! TRIMLINE CELL, Let me be the first customer....

That is after you make the payments to the FCC for $8-Billion in Wireless Spectrum.

And kill off the NIMBY crowd so you can put up a few towers within a few thousand miles of the nearest person.

I keep a Nice Trimline Phone Collection dating back to 1967, the only mod being replacing the back light bulb on the earlier ones with a resistor and a white LED.

Western Electric, the only phones designed to actually last forever.

My oldest WECO 302 from 1946 is well on it's way of outliving me

Not a museum piece either, I use it every day.

I like W.E. Rotary phones too. I'm convinced that they're better than most of the modern options. I buy them off of Ebay if I have a need for another one.

I have one at home as my regular phone. They don't support certain newer features, but a little bit of cheap extra hardware takes care of those problems (i.e. Caller ID).

I bet they already have the TV commercials taped:

Problem Solved

Here's a solution:

- Block text messages. I know Verizon will do it if you ask, and I assume the other carriers will as well.
- If you have Internet, never connect to it unless you're actually doing something (like logging out from dial-up).
- Sign up for the Do Not Call list.
- If you get E-mail through your phone, make sure you have SPAM blocking. Then again, that's wise regardless of how you get E-mail. Sign up for a secondary E-mail address you don't tell anyone. Use it if a website asks for your E-mail and you think it'll send SPAM. I recommend Yahoo! Mail for this purpose, since they don't offer free POP access. I recommend Gmail as a primary address, since it A) offers free POP access, and B) it's not specific to any ISP.

They miss the real opportunity...

What they really should do (but won't, since it makes too much sense) is offer Multi-media and text messaging for free, in exchange for receiving the ads.

If the ads are smart, everyone wins. How many people sign up for text alerts for different things already? Why not get them from brands you like? The advertiser gets a captive, interested audience, and you get something of value out of the deal!

Yeah, I know. This doesn't have any way for the carriers to screw us, so it won't happen.
