Joost Co-Founder Speaks About Its Future
Adult content and bandwidth capacity concerns
by KathrynV Saturday 25-Aug-2007 tags: Video
Janus Friis, co-founder of Joost, was interviewed recently about what’s ahead for the Web TV service. He was somewhat vague but did indicate that Joost is looking into a pay-per-view feature which might incorporate adult video programming. That might help generate funding for Joost, a company which currently relies primarily on investors and does not engage in revenue-splitting with ISPs. There are some concerns about bandwidth overload if Joost takes off, to which Friis responds that “the Internet can cope” and that interest in video drives the growth of broadband.

Re: Not impressed

I use it, and it's great. Watched all the Lexx episodes. Connects quick, no jitter. I only have a 1.4ghz celeron, and 1 gig ram, and 8mb integrated (shared memory) video, and it runs full screen even when putting it on a external monitor while browsing on my laptop screen.

The only thing I do not like, is the little nags.

It poped up a nag to give feedback, so I clicked it, but nothing happened. Nag went away though, 1 minute later, nag is back again. Kept doing that until I closed and re-opened the program, which, now it's doing it with the US Army advertisments.

Re: Not impressed

Hmm. Invite only. Wanted to see the old Lexx episodes I'd missed. Oh well.

Edit: NVM. Was lotto'd in.

I was impressed with the interface, but not at all with the content.

Re: Not impressed

Funny you say that, because the founder just mentioned in an interview that porn PPV is coming.

cpu overusage

The last time I tried it, it used 100% of my cpu. Browsing on a second monitor was very slow with joost running.

Re: cpu overusage

I run it on my 2.0 ghz core duo with 1gig memory and it runs full screen perfectly without cpu overuse or much memory use. I run it from my laptop to a 22inch HD LCD.

Still beta...

Let's give them some slack...

they are trying something new that's at least getting some headlines.

I'm not giving them crap because they are in beta...I just don't get the concept.

The "new" content isn't that compelling...and I don't need to pay yet another monthly subscription for "regular" tv content. I'd rather sling my regular cable/satellite that I'm already paying for to my computer.

No problems

I have had no problems at all with it. Runs very smooth here, especially the new version.

Useless outside the US..

Only thing is like every other video content service, it's useless outside of the US. Except National Geographic there's hardly any good content on Joost in Canada.

Re: Useless outside the US..

Sorry, I tried Joost about 4 months ago. It uses 100% of my Fios connection, and is only better than YouTube in resolution.

I can only appreciate that major cable networks are contributing content to them.

If they become an E-Porno network, they are done for, as far as I am concerned. Let em' burn in Hell.

Worst F'n Interface Ever

1. Have no idea what most of the icons represent.
2. Easily to "get lost" when scrolling the program list because the list "never ends".
3. Unintuitive way to exit the damn program. I originally thought it was ctrl-esc-del.
4. Very poor way of organizing channels. You have to subscribe to the channel just for the privilege to view the half-dozen programs' listing.
5. One never know how to move up/down/within a level. Let say you are watching a show. HTH do you move within/up/down a category? You just have to hit one of the silly icons and hope it leads you back to somewhere that you recognize.
6. Stupid program starts to load a program before you even make a selection. WTH thought of this idea?
7. To prove the program's interface is crap, I use Chinese p2ptv progams & I can navigate them relatively easily. Joost is in freakin English, and I still get frustrated.
