New BellSouth DSL Bundles
Despite merger, Southeast pricing remains different...

While BellSouth is technically now part of AT&T, they sure aren't acting like it. BellSouth is now offering users across their footprint a number of new DSL bundles -- including naked DSL (DSL without mandatory landline service), which they can get if they call up and ask for "bundle 97."

This comes as naked DSL availability across AT&T's pre-merger footprint remains scattershot. AT&T is offering naked DSL on a trial basis to attract college students in Austin, Chicago and Jacksonville. They're working on a naked DSL tier for the entire footprint to comply with merger conditions, but it will be limited to 768kbps.

DSL pricing and tier names also remain different, though the last we heard the pricing was supposed to be standardized across AT&T territory sometime during the second half of this year. Note AT&T also offers an unadvertised $10, 768kbps DSL tier to comply with merger conditions.

Prices & names by carrier:
AT&T
# Basic: 768kbps/384kbps $14.99
# Express: 1.5Mbps/384kbps $19.99
# Pro: 3Mbps/512kbps : $24.99
# Elite: 6Mbps/768kbps : $34.99
BellSouth # DSL Lite: 768kbps/128kbps : $24.95
# DSL Ultra - 1.5Mbps/256kbps : $32.95
# DSL Xtreme: 3Mbps/384kbps : $37.95
# DSL Xtreme 6.0: 6Mbps/512kbps : $42.95

Users in our BellSouth forum have dissected the new BellSouth bundle options not listed on the company's website, many of which only just appeared on August 1st. One user has created a spreadsheet (right) in an effort to decipher the discounts (corrections are welcome).

In addition to Bundle 97 ($37.95), users can also sign up for the triple play Bundle 63 ($99.95), the double play bundle 64 ($40), the double play bundle 65 with "nationwide savings value" LD ($50) and the double play bundle 66 with "AT&T Nationwide Value" LD ($60). The user has also neatly laid out how much it costs to bump your DSL speed for each bundle.

I wish I could add DirecTv onto my AT&T bundle

I have DirecTv and AT&T here, but they only bundle with Dish or Uverse out here
DirecTv has worked well for me since 2003.

Sad to say the only reason AT&T has DirecTV was because of how well BellSouth marketed its affiliate and gave good discounts. my parents in TX are in the same boat, they have former SBC and DirecTV.

Karl, you forgot to include the unadvertised $10 DSL tier for Bellsouth.

Re: $10 DSL

Wow, thats better than the 25$ RR lite i have.

Bellunder

@teksavvy.com
Sympatico about two months ago up in Canada had a rate increase of 10 dollars Canadian (which is almost as much as US dollars) on one of their Basic dsl accounts. They raised the price from $49.95 to $59.95 for the exact same service. The service used to have real newsgroups years and years ago now they have none not even text.

DSL Lite correction

DSL lite is 768 down.

Yes, we need to make sure everyone knows about the $10 plan. I have my in-laws on it as of last week. It is great now that we can actually call them without a busy signal.

If you do read this reply the reason it is important is because my father-in-law is disabled and falls easily and my mother-in-law has other health problems. I actually have decent in-laws. I passed my father-in-laws gun cleaning and knife sharpening test years ago. He gladly gave his daughter away.

Of course...

Former Bellsouth customers still get screwed by being charged almost $8 more for less upload speed. I am sure they will be taking their sweet ass time making those changes so they are even across all areas.

Is anyone besides me...

eyes glazing over trying to decipher this endless price games crap being thrown out..primarily by the telco industry? (although I don't totally absolve the cable co's either).

Why..can't someone just say..I want 1500k dsl..no landlines..no nothing..and get it for a reasonable price?

Or..768k.
Or..3,000k.
Or..whatever.

It seems to me that telco is missing out on a HUGE opportunity to REALLY do something to stem the loss of revenues from their mind blowing loss of landlines.
Instead of trying to force them down peoples throats anymore..they should let their lower tier DSL serve as the replacement for those revenues.

Telco OWNS the lower speed HSI market..and simply doesn't further capitalize on it by simply saying if you want 1500k dsl for 20.00 a month..Here..you can have it.
That is a TOTAL replacement for those lost landline revenues...and you get to keep the customers.

People who might otherwise sign up for that many times go to cable Hsi because there is one thing they CAN do..and that is to add.
And, when you add the landline that they don't want..PLUS the lower cost dsl..you just might as well pay 42.95 a month to comcast to get the kinds of speeds we get.

While I guess there is some give on telco's part in certain areas, just way too much of this is way too secretive, and depends on who you call and at what time.
Honestly, I read through these telco forums here at BBR and wonder how some people have the time to do all the negotiating they need to with these companies to get a deal.
And, Lord help them when the specials end.
It's off to the races for Ma Bell.

Listen up Telco's.
768k unbundled..no landline..totally naked..15 to 20 a month
1500k to 3,000k..24.95.

Forget the games. The shenanigans...you'll have a really big winner on your hands..

and will make up for all your lost landline customers fleeing you like passengers off the decks of the titanic.

Re: Is anyone besides me...

$20 per month is not a replacement for all the landline revenue. There is still the FCC subscriber line charge, the other surcharges, and the reciprocal comp for whenever someone calls the customer on that landline. In most telcos the reciprocal comp brings in more $$ than the dialtone.

AT&T is doing what their doing because they think their a telephone company, telephone service first, DSL service second. Right now even when they do offer "naked" DSL they charge almost as much as if you have POTS service + DSL.

Rick, your question is a good one but think about it. They get to milk money from BOTH the telephone service AND the DSL service verses from just the DSL service. From a business stand point it makes sense. When I renewed my service with the SNET->SBC->AT&T monster back in August, I asked several CS reps about "naked" DSL (or DSL without the phone service), not one of them knew what I was talking about. One even asked my WHY I would want just DSL without phone service. That is how they think. Phone first, DSL second.

I am NOT a telco shill, I hate AT&T with a passion. I even dumped their long distance service when I got DSL service with SBC, Then SBC goes and changes their name to AT&T when they bought them out.

AT&T is now the largest telecom company in the world, with $120 billion in revenues and more than 100 million customers

last i checked Comcrap only has 24 million customers,,now ask yourself who's owning who?? Comcast is walking in AT&T's shadow and always will

Wow, thank God you're not in charge. Do you honestly think that the operational costs and profits of providing any level of DSL is comparable to POTS?

No, pre-merger AT&T(former SBC) pricing for DSL is not avalible in AT&T-SE (BellSouth).

yes, where are the shills now

i've made numerous critical posts about AT&T/BELLSOUTH's inability to standardize their prices with the rest of the company. everyone said "give it time. it takes time to make this change, etc". well, it's now clear that AT&T/BS has no intention of standardizing the speeds or prices.

AT&T/BellSouth just gave the finger to it's customers.

$10 DSL is available only to exisiting POTS customers who have not had AT&T/BellSouth DSl within the past 2 months. Per-merger conditions AT&T is to have dry loop DSL for $20 by 28-Dec 2007

Re: Not bad

Those people have the faster, MaxSync download speeds, and an included static IP. Different offerings, different prices.

After you deduct the $15/mo value of the static IP, the old Bellsouth region pays $7/mo less (or 80% of the regular AT&T rate) for 19% more download and 33% less upload speed.

That would only be valid if you could separate the Static and get a lower price and since you cannot, it isn't comparable, IMHO.

Data is heavier in the South (must be the Country Ham and Grits w/ Red Eye Gravy) and we all know it costs more for the "Good Ole' Boys" Network to push/pull heavier packets Northward or Westward and all points in between those 2 directions. It's cheaper for Northern ISPs to send it South as gravity helps.

just kidding!
