After mulling it over, they decide WiMax is the way to go
(old news - 10:58AM Sunday Sep 09 2007)
tags: wireless · hardware · Sprint Mobile Broadband
Nokia announced early last year that they’d be holding off on introducing WiMax until they’d made further determinations about how well it would do in the market. They’ve spent the time in between then and now studying WiMax and deciding that it is indeed the way to go for wireless broadband. They predicted at the time that they would be offering mobile WiMax in 2008 and it looks like their predictions were correct. The company’s new Internet Tablet handset (which will be available through their partnership with Sprint early next year) will have WiMax technology.

Last year next year

What happened to the Wi-Max chipsets that were last year predicted to be installed in laptops by this time already ? Do we have any Why-Max laptops yet ? Next year again, maybe ? Perhaps they are waiting for the tower structure to be in place before spending money on portable devices that would have no source of service ? Since Wi-Max is technically non functional as it is purported to work, we will be waiting for a lot longer than "Second Quarter of Next Year", like all the other "Second Quarter of Next Years" we already have sat through for the last 5 years when the protocol was first ratified !

Re: Last year next year

Easy does it there big fella. Sprint said last year that test markets would be up in the 4Q of 2007 with commercial availability by 2Q of 2008. 100 million pops available by end of 2008. That's been the time line for quite a while now.

Technically non functional? They've had wimax networks up in Korea now for almost two years... And just because a protocol was ratified doesn't mean it's built out in 5 months...

Easy does it

The N800 already has Bluetooth for hooking to cell phones; 802.11g wifi, Skype built-in, USB 2.0, add-on navigation, etc. It wouldn't take much to add Wimax support. It costs about $300.

Later, they could add Wimax to their N series cell phones.

And they will have a Wimax base station products for ISPs by end 2007:

Nice gamble......

Since nokia isn't trying to compete with all of the media content type phone......I'd like to see how much usage costs will be!

Voltage?

Anyone know if the Wimax chips require a lot of voltage?
One reason... why apple didn't put 3G chips on the iPhone, and took EVDO instead. The anandtech review speculated 3G chips to subtract roughly an hour of usage time.

Re: Voltage?

Apple didn't go with EVDO, they went with GPRS. I think you mean UMTS/HSDPA

Re: Voltage?

Actually the iPhone has EDGE (some call it 2.5G), a slightly better technology than GPRS (2G).

Re: Voltage?

and wimax is 4G, so it wouldn't matter what 3G apple had chosen (if they had) rather than going with tired old 2.5G speeds.

some place

nokia vs others

the nokia phones are much better than all other brand phones including the iphone if you compare it to the nokia n95 which is in the same price range as the iphone, well coming to the point, nokia has still not been able to make its place in usa but its probably the number one cell phone company in the rest of the world, abt wimax, i think its probably going to be the next big thing considering the fact that the current services offered are really not something an average person could use easily.. hope to see it out in markets soon
