Fighting FiOS Deployment Secrecy
Call the FiOS waaaambulance...
by Karl Bode Friday 28-Sep-2007
Tipped by wtansill See Profile
The Washington Post is annoyed that Verizon won't tell them when and where the company plans to deploy Verizon FiOS in the DC area. Locals are annoyed that FiOS has been deployed in all the surrounding areas, but not in DC itself -- and Verizon is staying quiet when asked by lawmakers and journalists when things are going to change. The reporter does note that there is some information available on Verizon's State websites:

Click for full size
You can find scraps of information on Verizon's state subsidiaries' Web sites. Verizon's Virginia site has a page that lists streets scheduled for Fios construction each month, but it doesn't provide block numbers to let you know which part of the Little River Turnpike or Carlin Springs Road is being upgraded. Its Maryland site buries the same information three links away from the home page, though it also offers a low-resolution map of service in Montgomery County.

Of course Verizon has no interest in giving Comcast or other competitors a heads-up when it comes to deployment plans. Nor do they want to give ammunition to those who've accused the company of redlining by disclosing the precise calculations made to determine what neighborhoods get service.

Can somebody edit the verizon logo out of it? I want to blow it up and post it on my fridge so I can threaten my kids when they get whiny. "WAAAAHMbulance" is a term my husband and I have been using for quite some time now

Coast?

Seems like Verizon is wiring up the coast lines first.

I'm really shocked they wired Fort Wayne, IN, Which is soo close to me, yet so far..They must have some kind of high up Verizon boss living there or something..

Re: Coast?

As far as Verizon putting FiOS in Chicago, as seen on the predicted Fios locations map, last time i checked Chicago is served by Atat

It is far more complicated than that...

They are going to deploy in areas that are 1) closest to their own HQ. 2) They are going to wire areas where there is a great deal of dis-satisfaction already from the current providers. (This allows them to get a big hit on the competition and take unhappy customers) 3) Where there is little competition 4) Where it makes financial sense to do so. 5) where there competition has weak networks.

Those are just some of the criteria used...

That's not totally true. I was just checking some of the deployed places in my area, and there are quite a few that aren't money areas and a good number of money areas that don't have it. For us, it looks to be overhead lines first, regardless of where the money is.

Where's NY?

I checked the Verizon New York website and cannot find and listing of deployments. You need to supply an address and they will tell you if it is available but no schedule of future deployments. I am happy with OOL but I would be curious to know when the trucks are going to start rolling through the neighborhood. About 2 months ago there were some Verizon reps supposedly surveying the polls in the area for FiOS deployment.

They don't want to lose DSL customers

Am I the only one that sees what Verizon is doing? They are not deploying FiOS in the cities because that's where most of their DSL customers are. They want to pick-up as many FiOS customers as possible from the rural areas where DSL is not available while keeping their DSL customers in the cities where DSL is big business for them. The area I live in (not where I am currently posting from) has FiOS in all the towns around me, but doesn't even have plans to bring it to my city. It's not that they are targeting affluent towns, it's that they are targeting areas where there is very little to no DSL available.

It's much more difficult to wire cities. Not only do you need vastly more drops, but in mulit-tenants, that are generally largely rented, you need to get landowner permission before punching new holes in the walls. Plus the multi-unit equipment is more expensive as well. They're deploying it where it is fastest to deploy, and probably where they think the most internet subscribers are located.

Not true here. Based on what Verizon has publicly announced, and has asked for TV franchises, the only areas getting FIOS are those that already have DSL.

I don't have DSL available at my house, but the street next to me does. We're both served out of the same CO. Strange isn't it?

It is multiple reasons.
- follow the revenue to gain money: go for affluent areas for dollar-per-fiber-mile; plumb rural ones where DSL was not an option and pick up cable/sat customer; where there's already multi-tenant agreements, working in risers and hallways can be fast
- avoid revenue losses: while a truck roll is a truck roll, copper plant maintenance is expensive; only overbuild dsl where there's serious competition from a cable provider, or where they have likely video franchises in-hand; target new customers over upgrading existing customers (maybe?)
- there's bound to be more, but it is never "just one" reason behind a deployment strategy and I need more coffee

VZ is wiring by population (25k plus Severna Park, MD) vice (less than 12k parts of Pasadena and Rivera Beach, MD) It's all about the dollar signs. VZ wired everywhere around me but not were I'm located. (4k ft from central office) in pasadena. Verizon also didn't even update the contruction page for the month of September. What gives? VZ is very secretive to keep their competition off guard but that could also bite them in the butt if they take too long to wire up the communities they're already contracted to complete. Come on and finish up Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

I bet yous black and your blackness impeaded your ability to succeed in life. If the federal government were to bump your welfare checks,Verizon would see the money and quickly deploy FIOS!

It's hard to get a map by any company

If you don't have the phone number of the location, you're not going to get a list of plans/prices from anyone. Basically, you cannot gather information for home-buying decisions, except by looking at reviews on BBR. Also, the
CO locator is helpful for DSL info. If the US wants to be serious about broadband deployment, the first step is information on who has broadband and what kind. A database of 100million addresses, technology types, and bit rates Leave out everything else, no need to violate privacy.

There's not many reports in the city of DC by BBR members, plenty throughout the surrounding area though. Verizon's reaction to the press is understandable, they don't have plans to install FIOS in DC yet... would rather not say that, and there's no reason they should have to. BUT I'd really like them to provide that database so that government can make informed policies.

Washington Post Business Editor should be able to guess.

It all comes down to generating as much cash flow from FIOS customers as quickly as possible at the least cost. As has already been stated that often means areas with aerial lines rather than buried utilities. It may mean suburbs sooner than urban because of less infrastructure disruption and less red tape. Mundane reasons such as one central office has plenty of room for equipment while another doesn't also come into play. BTW Fort Worth, IN was chosen as one of the two test areas before the national rollout.

Everyone's gonna get it eventually right? So be patient. Good things come to those who wait. Maybe by the time your area gets it'll be a newer and better version then the areas that already have it and the people in those areas will start whining for the newer and better version.

And I don't have it yet if your wondering.

So if they started installing it in my area tomorrow, how log would it be until I'd be able to use it? A couple years I guess?

Re: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I just found out that since I'm not in Verizon territory, I won't be getting FIOS.

So why exactly does FIOS and U-Verse want their deployment schedules secret? Are they afraid Comcast will harass the crews and do other things to prevent them from installing?

Verizon FiOS site

Went to verizon "check FiOS availability" site to see if it was available in my neighborhood here in DC. They asked for my address and phone # and reported YES! and offered me 2 plans identified by speeds. If I didnt happen to know these speeds are DSL speeds, I would have ended up buying DSL as a result of asking about FiOS!!!
Bastards.
