Sprint CEO Takes Shot At Telcos
Says special access market has failed...
Sprint Nextel CEO Gary Forsee took some shots at incumbent operators AT&T and Verizon on Tuesday, testifying before Congress that the FCC's deregulatory policies unfairly benefit incumbents and have resulted in market failure. Forsee was specifically complaining about the high volume business telecom market, 94.1% of which is controlled by the incumbents. Both AT&T and Verizon, of course, were having none of it, with AT&T insisting the market was thriving, and Verizon insisting that Sprint was "trying to use regulatory measures to undermine a successful market-based business environment." Also see AP report.

It's the truth.

It's good to see someone "high up" expressing this sort of opinion about the huge telco monsters. I doubt this news will change much, but every little bit of speaking out helps.

Kind of funny to see

a telco complaining about someone using regulatory measures to influence something.

"Verizon insisting that Sprint was "trying to use regulatory measures to undermine a successful market-based business environment."

Re: Kind of funny to see

I think Sprint just wants more gov't slush fund money.

All those slush funds should go away IMO. They're nothing but cash cows.

Ya, I thought that was ironic also.

a successful market-based business environment.

Yeah, You go Verizon. Like how your Wireless has its product vendors lock features down so that they can market the same product to VZW customers at a premium.

Can't wait to see how folks pony up for the GPS enabling of the "Crackberry" Pearl now coming to a VZW near you.

Is this the same...

Gary Forsee that was at one time being groomed to replace Duane Ackerman at Bellsouth? I believe it is. I guess that when you change companies, your point of view changes as well. Was he not aware of these "unfair benefits" while he was at Bellsouth?

Re: Is this the same...

Anyone notice that since the mega mergers cell phone plans have mostly stayed the same. Before prices dropped minutes increased.

Now that the minutes and prices have pretty much stabilized the junk fees are being increased and new ones added.

Sprint needs to deal with keeping their CURRENT customers!

Sprint needs to make keeping their CURRENT customers a priority before they worry about getting spectrum to woo new ones with! Today, for the THIRD time this year, they cut my PCS service off due to a computer billing error-WHILE I was on an important phone call! The call just went DEAD and when I tried to reconnect, I got connected to a computer, that told me that before service was restored, I would have to pay the past due balance of ZERO dollars and ZERO cents!

FINALLY. I got a "customer finance" person who told me that "the computer" automatically cuts off customers who haven't paid their bills on time. I told her that I was an 8 year customer who always pays his bills on time and that this was the THIRD time this had happened in under a year! She again gave me the computer (c)rap, so I told her that I wanted to pay my bill then. I asked her the balance and without batting an eyelash, she said: "zero dollars and zero cents"!

I asked her if something sounded strange about that amount
and it took her about five seconds to figure it out!

Can you believe this?

So, she turned my service back on-and then informed me they were doing this as a COURTESY and could not do it again until December!

HUH????!!!

So, Sprint, you'll soon be losing me as a long time customer-that'll make 500,001 you've lost so far this year....

Here's a novel idea for you-WHY NOT DEAL WITH KEEPING THE LOYAL CUSTOMERS YOU ALREADY HAVE BEFORE WORRYING ABOUT THE EXTRA SPECTRUM NEEDED TO GET NEW ONES???!!!

Got it?

Re: Sprint needs to deal with keeping their CURRENT customers!

There's no such thing as appeasing current customers. Business schools for years have taught the 80/20 rule (80% of your profits come from 20% of your customers), but who actually listens to that after they've gotten their expensive toilet paper? The Wall Street bell is what's telling them what to do. Pavlov anyone?

I've had a plan for $19.95/month ~ $24 - 500 min + nights & weekends and NO ROAMING CHARGES!
It hasn't been 10 years yet, but they have done almost everything possible to change my account.
My bill is paid on the day of the month that it was originally set up to be paid on. They have tried to change this several times. They have downloaded bad info to my phones, but I have a large box of spare phones...

I can't count how many times Reps have called me up trying to offer something to change the plan, but can't match it.

Honestly, if I had a regular plan, I probably would have changed providers and plans several times by now.

Best of luck!

AT&T and Verizon comment edited for truthfulness....

"The market is thriving... our profits are excellent! This is an example of a successful monopoly-control based business environment."...
