Remote DVR, games, media extender, suggestions...

Blogger Dave Zatz e-mails us to note he was invited to Verizon headquarters for a first glimpse at some new FiOSTV functionality coming to users early next year. On top of the addition of casual games (which we already mentioned), FiOSTV users should see some significant upgrades on the media extender front.

Music and photo navigation will be enhanced (folders, playlists) AND the ability to stream video from Media Manager will be added. All sorts of file formats (AVI, MPEG4, DiVx, Flash, etc) will be transcoded on the fly. Currently, the transcoding is resolution-independent Meaning you can throw any size video at it and, while the video will stream PC->DVR as MPEG2, the resolution wont be touched. Thinking about all the HD video available via BitTorrent, I can see Verizon choosing to throttle back resolutions during the development process in order to keep transfers efficient.
He also got a peek at the upcoming mobile DVR scheduling service, and a "What's hot" suggestion service that highlights the most viewed TV content in your region based on anonymous polled data pulled from nearby users.

HD?

How about more HD channels? To hell with the games, but the additional media manager features will be nice.

Re: HD?

Absolutely. How about focusing more on the basics - like better VOD content, like better HD content, and keep on improving the still-lame (though slightly improved) guide.

Give us MoRE HD channels!

Yeah. I agree. If I wanted a home media center, I would use my PS3 or 360. Or install Vista Ultimate. Yeah, I'm a masochist. (or is it sadist?)

Use cable service as a bench mark

How about:

1) roll out the IMG 2.0 guide already. Stop reading the whiners on this board, who complain. I'm sure it's not 100% perfect, but for my purposes it would still be 100% better than the crappy interface that exists now.

2) How about new HD channels, especially MSG-HD.

3) Better ON-DEMAND! How about Howard-TV, up to date VOD movies. A way to search for new VOD movies.

4) How about the NHL network!

5) How about getting better program guide information.

6) How about figuring out how to add external storage to the DVR. 160G is not enough, especially for multi room viewing.

7) How about multi room viewing in HD!

8) HD VOD!!!

FIOS has a long way to go before worrying about stupid things like on-line games.

Hi,
Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that VOD HD is out with the new menu.Don't bash me

I have the new guide and I've yet to see any VOD. I've several people way that it's in testing, but nothing publicly available.

Nice guide

I love the look of the new guide.

Fios is still in it's infancy, and for as young as it is, they are really attempting some bold features for it's user experience.

By media extenders....

....I wonder if you will be able to use either an XBOX360 or XP Media Center PC.

Re: By media extenders....

If you have an XB360, you don't need it. You already have media center connectivity.

For everything else you can use Tversity »www.tversity.com/home

BUT, will it work with the Verizon box?

Re: By media extenders....

Tversity only works with an XB360.

The Verizon box isn't even out yet...

Re: By media extenders....

Tversity works on the 360, PS3, Xbox (with XBMC), PSP, Nintendo DS (with browser), Wii, other UPnP media devices.

I normally use it with my 360 but when it bricked i could still watch things via my wii no problem.

Ouch!

Instead of games they should fix something so basic as the 'reminder' option...

Is it the firmware or the box???

I would like to see some interest in getting feedback from current users and fixing NOW KNOWN quirks and issues. I am speaking of issues with the box itself that won't be addressed with the IMG upgrade. Ones such as the previously mentioned reminder issue. The overlapping recording that shouldn't require the choice of missing the last minute of one program in lieu of viewing the first minute of another on a different channel. This comes up if you happen to be home and viewing while the scheduled recording takes place. I am not sure whether these quirks are the fault of the Motorola box or the Verizon Firmware ported to it. I did not find issues such as this with the Scientific Atlantic box with a previous cable provider. I am sure there are other quirks that drive other subscribers nuts. Any takers.

How is this content put on the box, if I may ask.

Re: Is it the firmware or the box???

PM me! I will explain what I was talking about. But wait a minute I think you have REGISTER in order to PM.

Is there anyone else out there that thinks more attention needs to be given the function of this Set Top BOX (Sorry, the "B" in STB stands for Box) than with the look and feel of the Interactive Media Guide.
