The reasoning behind the E-911 debacle is the old analog phones. When I walk through the parking lot of stores around here you still see OLD bag phones sitting on seats. I realize switching to a newer technology is not always the easiest thing to do, but Alltel is the last network to allow these phones on their network. This past summer I saw a man around here at walmart talking on a Micro-Tac or equivalent. That does not make sense.
EDIT- Our county is known as the "Wheat Capitol of the World" It is many times been the leading wheat producer per capita of the nation. So stick the city boy comment somewhere else.

| Re: Nice I don't think they use these phones because they don't want to upgrade. They use them because they don't want to downgrade. I think the bagphones are capable of putting out 3W while a handheld phone isn't even 1W. I know we used to be in a fringe coverage area and the bagphone was the only thing that worked. I'm sure there are still areas a bagphone would work and my little handheld wouldn't. In farming, time lost is money lost, so having a reliable cell phone is worth it. I'd be willing to bet alot of them also have a regular cordless cellular phone, too. When Nextel and Centennial put up towers in our area, we got away from the bagphones. We now get Sprint, Alltel, Centennial, AT&T, and Nextel coverage.

Benton, AR | Arkansas has AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and Alltel 3G coverage. Last I heard, only Alltel had 3rd Generation wireless speeds in NW-FL.
OH, and Arkansas actually has a city.. which NW FL does NOT. | |

As I explained in my dissent to the Joint Board’s recommendation (in May of this year) for a general CETC cap, piecemeal Universal Service Fund (USF) reform is actually counter-productive to the far more important goal of rationally implementing comprehensive reform. The USF is totally screwed up. Trying to fix the USF a sale or merger at a time is the cowards way of dealing with the mess that is the USF. They need to totally revamp it. Or better yet, get rid of it altogether.

| Agree about USF being abolished. Having retired to a rural area after living in east coast cities most of my life, I agree that the USF is totally broken. It's not used for improving rural access or making it more affordable, it's just corporate pork plain and simple. It's time the fund was abolished and this ruse about corporations needing money to build out rural areas be dropped. The government can set policy and impose taxes to achieve those policies. Communication and energy infastructures are critical to national security, not just local economies. Set the policies and raise corporate taxes to compel compliance. I'm sure companies will pass a long a surcharge to cover their taxes, but at least it would be a more honest number than the methods they use now to "tax" for the USF. | |

I would think that if having a cell phone is necessary for the livelihood of your business, that the cost would basically be an expense of doing business.
I do agree that people should not have to put forth the whole cost, but what other option is there when no other cell phone would work out there after analog is turned off?
Of course this news item wasn't about analog, it was about E911-requirements, which tend to require digital cell phones, and in the case of Alltel, CDMA-based phones. | |

| What's the distance comparison for CDMA/GSM bag phones vs. AMPS bag phones? From what I recall, old AMPs car phones were 5W. They worked everywhere and sounded great. Nothing since has been as good, so I know digital is a downgrade, but how much in the case of the above two products? | |

To be totally honest I'm not quite sure, I would assume that the digital bag phones would be close to the performance of their analog counterparts, if not better than them.
