Who knew dial-up VoIP wouldn't last?
(old news - 08:37AM Wednesday Oct 31 2007)
tags: business · VoIP
That mystery folding VoIP provider referenced by Packet8 in a press release last month appears to be NetZero Voice. The company is sending an e-mail to customers stating that the dial-up VoIP service will be discontinued as of December 15 and that they've struck a deal with Packet8 that allows customers to migrate their number to Packet8 Freedom Unlimited Service for $19.95/month.

According to the statement issued by Packet8 last month, the service, which was launched in late 2005, only had about 12,000 subscribers. NetZero has posted a discontinuation FAQ here.

Privatephone appears to be part of the Netzero Voice feature set. So, while the Netzero Voice termination FAQ doesn't specifically mention Privatephone, my guess is that Privatephone will be discontinued as well.

You might want to checkout »www.grandcentral.com to replace Privatephone.

Re: PRIVATEphone too? ?

I'm not a big fan of grand central...especially since they've been swallowed by Google. I'd rather use Jangl, Jaxtr and YouMail.

I never really used my PrivatePhone but sure the hell would like to keep my number...225-7878 PrivatePhone's website always looked so cluttered and ugly and full of flashing and gyrating ads.

AIM Phone Line works exactly the same as PrivatePhone and I trust AOL more than I do Netzero....not as much spam, better looking websites...and I already have a scree name/email account so I don't have to bother with managing yet another useless webmail account just so I could use PrivatePhone.

Why? It's "private"...let people call and leave me voicemail messages

Grandcentral is only for incoming calls. You need a line to be able to call out on.

That being said, Grandcentral is great for a virtual number.

I read over the FAQ and I am not too sure that PrivatePhone will go away. NetZero voice provided an add-on service to allow call forwarding and dialout. However, I have the most basic version of PrivatePhone that forwards all calls to voicemail and has no dialing options. As that feature is independent of NetZero voice I suppose it might be able to survive. I am kind of surprised that NetZero has not clarified this.

Well who would have thought a company that is based on DIAL-UP internet service would offer VoIP.

I hope not. I see the privatephone web site says nothing about termination, and is still accepting signups.

How did you get that out of that thread? NZ Voip is going away 15 Dec 2007, and, for all intents & purposes, that includes PrivatePhone.com. Why do you think NZ has a page devoted to porting existing members to Packet 8? If the service was not going away, that page you pointed out yourself would not exist. The way I read it is if you want to continue service, start coughing up $19.99/month to Packet 8. Looks like I have to give Grand Central a try now, dammit.

Private Phone according to NZ and PP's website is not closing nor hints about it with the NZ VoIP. They're separate services.

I hope you're correct. I've grown really attached to my voicemail freebie. It's the the # I give to entitities I know will sell my contact info and otherwise bother the shit out of me. Let them leave voicemail until they run outta breath.

Ya, I use privatephone as the voicemail box for my VoIP service (because the voicemail service bundled with my VoIP service is unusable).

I just went on the privatephone website because of a voicemail attachment in my email. PrivatePhone will be shutting down on December 15. PrivatePhone is the free version of NZ's VoIP, so when NZ shuts VoIP service down, PrivatePhone will too. The link on the website takes you to Packet8. I signed up and so far, I like the service. Can't beat getting a free phone and 1st month free! Nominal charge of less than 5 bucks for admin fee. I requested a port of my current number to them.

PRIVATEPHONE SERVICE WILL BE ENDING ON DECEMBER 15, 2007

More like 29.95

After they add taxes and fees on the price will be closer to $30. I signed up for the $19.95, but I'm paying over $28 each month. The price seems to go up every other month.

How about, for less than $19.95?
I'd surely like to keep "my" PP number, but is it really mine?

Such a shame to see NetZero Voice Go

This was the only VOIP service I've come across with a decent voicemail service... i.e., the ability to make a custom message, to be notified of voicemails by email, and the ability to check voicemails OFFLINE, without an Internet connection or special software.

Anyone home?

I have put in a request to port my NetZero Voice number, but it comes back with a PIC freeze. I've tried contacting NetZero but get automated messages the support is no longer available. Does anyone know how to contact a live body there? Have anyone ported their number?

NYNikeMike

Netzero Voice

I can't speak to the facts regarding it being a dial-up voice provider, however as a broadband user, I enjoyed NZ Voice tremendously.

I mean, I paid $4.00 a month and had a local phone number, with unlimited incoming minutes, and 100 minutes outgoing a month. This was more than enough to supplement my unlimited minutes cell phone plan, just to have a phone in the home. And the quality of the service was excellent on my high-speed line. I had the service for nearly a year.

Regardless, all good things must come to an end. I think the fact that they are folding it has a lot more to do with the fact that it was barely marketed or advertised, as opposed to it simply being compatible with dial-up internet.

Either way, I won't be switching to packet8. "Phonepower.com" offers unlimited service for $10 bucks a month (for the first 6 months) before going to $19.99 unlimited, so I suggest other NZ Voice users who are switching to check it out. They give a free voip router, with no contract. I will be porting my number on Nov. 26, as it can take up to 14 days for it to switch.

Good news. Here's a reply I just received from a Packet8 account manager about porting your Private Phone number to Packet8 and then to another provider.

Here was my question: if I transfer my privatephone number to your services and then find that I am unhappy with your services, can I then port the number elsewhere or should I just decide to ditch the number now and go with a service like Grandcentral.com rather than be trapped with a service I'm unhappy with?

Packet8 Response: You can for sure port your number once you port it to Packet8. We would be able to port your number in and if you were unhappy with the service you could port that number to another service.
