Ed Mueller has been the CEO of Qwest for over four months now and people are starting to get antsy for news about what changes are in the works for the company. We know that Qwest is planning to offer 20Mbps FTTN to its customers and that IPTV may or may not be in Qwest’s future. Other than that, the company hasn’t said much and The Denver Post reports that that’s because there isn’t much to say.

They say that Mueller may be having trouble figuring out exactly what to do to make Qwest work.
“It was widely viewed that Notebaert, during his five-year tenure, tried to dress Qwest up for a sale, or as one analyst put it, "put lipstick on a pig." Without any buyers, Mueller's job is to take the lipstick off and get the pig to perform.”
Although Mueller is expected to announce his future plans by the end of the year, it’s anticipated that he won’t have exciting news on most fronts. Qwest may or may not make acquisitions but won’t be moving into the mobile phone market. The company may eventually partner with other companies to increase video speeds (or it may not). The official announcement is expected from Mueller within the next month.

Wrong post above

People are expecting more than may be fiscally possible for Qwest at this time. They would be smart not to promote "news about what changes are in the works" when they have no, or limited intention on following through with them.

Re: Mobile Phones?

Yes...

Back in the times of the cellular boom, then US West put their money on DSL and HighSpeed internet as the next great savior. To this day, this is why Qwest's cellular service never amounted to much of anything. HOWEVER, US West was the leader in DSL where much of the nation had squat and to this day, in my opinion, has the best DSL in the country.

If by 'best', you mean slowest, then I agree.

Re: Mobile Phones?

No.. I mean BEST.. and it's NOT the slowest aDSL service out there. Verizon - what is it... 3mb? 5mb? a their top? and at&t is 6mb.. so, slowest? no.. fastest offering of the majors? yes. Qwest's standard offering for up is 896 (except the 3mb tier which is 512)..

Where YOU are you may only get a slow speed.. but I'm not about to nit pick the individual cases..

..but, I was talking "best" as in the way Qwest allows you to use your service, what they offer, and support.. etc. Try registering a domain name to your account and reverse DNS through AT&T with out expensive fees and hours on the phone.

So no.. you're wrong..

Re: Mobile Phones?

I agree that their service is quite reliable, but we also pay a lot more for the speeds that we get. Most people get only get 1.5Mbps, a lot can only get 256Kbps. Unless you live in a major city area. I'm on the outskirts of Seattle, can only get 1.5Mbps, up until a 20 months ago 256Kbps was all I could get.

Qwest as a company receives a lot of the USF for their phone system. Wish they would be fair and use some of it to fibre feed the remote DSLAMS, instead of sitting fat and pretty on their monopoly.

Wrong. USWest had a very large Cellular presence. One of the better. I know I was part of the rollout. Of which at the time I had a Celluar1 car phone that all the Pres's from the divisions that were involved used play with all the time. I like to think it was my car phone that pushed them into the biz. I didn't mind, it got my bill paid for me every month. And then it became Airtouch, and is now Verizon in the Western 14 states that USWest had. It got dumped/split off when DSL was becoming fashionable and the USW/Qwest merger was in the offing and when Qwest saw DSL as more important with Anschutes promise as part of the merger he would link us with the big fibre line that runs through the Southern US using his right of way via the Railroads he owned making Qwest the new good guy all providing DSL company. The FCC bought that real big, they allowed the merger. Then about a month after the merger was complete, not even taking a breath, he dumped the Railroads and the right of way to run the Fibre. The FCC did nothing. I was with the cellular portion for over 15 years. Unfortunately, Verizon didn't keep up the pace. I got better calls in the California Desert than I did in Downtown Denver. When I left, I left an incredible plan and with no inception date, I could do as I pleased with plans and phones. But with no service, it really didn't matter. Their current product is treated like a redheaded stepchild.

DSL.
USWest was never a leader in DSL. "In the day", it was SprintION on USW/Qwest lines with 10MB SDSL (that's both ways) and 4 Digital Phone Lines for $150 a month with no problems what so ever the whole time. As mentioned here, Qwest likes to resell. When they get their price. That was until Qwest took over and made it hard for SprintION to do business and SprintION decided it would be cheaper to go out of business than to fight for their Law given right to access. And we the consumers lost big time there with the start of the demise of SDSL. But finally now Qwest is the best in the area, and I've had them all, and hopefully getting better as advertised.

BUT . . . what I want to know is what happened to SDSL and most of all my 10MBps speed. It looks like we got sold out for a cheaper on their end product, ADSL, with less than speed rich product. I saw a giant industry flop towards the late 90's and ADSL was the new norm with the inflated price and lower speeds. I only hope that these rumors of better service with new technology are true. Qwest is sending me a new modem to, hopefully, remedy problems that I am having, even though I am 3318 feet from the CO, and I am hoping that the new modem will have the newer technology that is being said that they are moving towards and will be able to jump on the newer services. We'll see.

Compete Qwest! And win us !

Honestly, if they REALLY want to take off, then they should make a B-Line and go directly for existing Comcast customers. How? The answer is simple, Fiber us Qwest, and Fiber us as much as you can. Us locals are DYING for FIOS speeds, and none is offered here, (sans parts of Lone Tree which is choked) You make that investment and you can officially watch your customer base fly upwards. I for one would jump, fast as hell, if I got a flyer saying Fiber 20/5 available at $49.99 a month at my house!

Re: Compete Qwest! And win us !

I seriously doubt Qwest, especially after a nation wide fiber deployment, could or would sell you 20/5 for anything near $49.99 a month.

Right now, Comcast is enjoying squashing Qwest day after day.. and, too easily Comcast can pound Qwest into the ground if they tried to one up them too much too fast.

I have Charter HSI, but I would drop it in a second if I could get DSL from Qwest. Unfortunately I live in Sprint territory surrounded by Qwest.

I would consider getting DSL from Sprint, but they charge more than Qwest, and force you to get phone service too so forget that.

Comcast can't compete with verizon Fios or Utopia, how could they compete with Qwest if they decided to do it?? You would see a complete exit left of Comcast customers in Denver to Qwest if Qwest actually decided to do this. Who doesn't want the speeds and prices? Fios pricing is:
15/15 $64.99
15/2 $49.99

There is just no way Comcast could compete with that...15 SYMETRICAL!!!!! at $66- ?? Heck, that is almost the cost of a downgraded service when you don't have a bundle as it is!

Re: Compete Qwest! And win us !

If it is any consolation, I work for the contracting company that holds the Colorado Qwest contract and we are working on a large scale FTTN effort in Denver (surrounding areas) and Colo Sprgs. They have dedicated huge quantities of materials to this project and I think you will see some monster leaps in line quality and product availability in the near future at least in these markets. If you had any idea of the TRUE cost to make this project go you would simply fall over backwards.

.. three serious gamers in the house.. interleaving is on... gaming is not dead. I'm sitting here with ping times in the 40ms range and have interleave on my account.

Qwest, the worst of the worst.

I recently disconnected from Qwest because after three attempts they couldn't resolve why my calls were being dropped while using their land line with a corded phone, I'd call their repair center and while on hold the line would go dead for 5 minutes and some times up to four hours...their service people come out and pronounce the house wiring clean, problem must be elsewhere...nothing ever followed up on.
The last serviceman said the reason was oxidation on the connectors, he kept seeing it but nobody else could, turned out the guy was full of hot air, the contacts were gold...gold doesn't oxidize.
So I cancel their service and go to an internet phone provider, they sucked worse so back to Qwest who has to issue me a new phone number which is barely cold, in fact I spent an entire day answering calls from people wanting to pick up their dope, so I contacted Qwest and had them get me another phone number, they did...only problem...it still belonged to the original user and I cancelled Qwest for good.
Am with Phone Power and all is well.
IF anyone takes a peek at Qwests internal budget for 2007/2008 you will see they have allowed 0 for landline maintenance and upgrade which means the very lines their DSL and internet depend on are being left to rot further.
DSL cancellations in the Washington Port Orchard area is at 70% because the lines are so bad.
Their new CEO is invisible and not answering questions for yet another month and just keeps putting off everything.
The upper management that counted has already jumped ship when Notabert left and now all you have is a skeleton crew on a sinking ship with no rudder or captain.
All I can do is hope their value keeps dropping so they might become a more attractive buy out, but the company is so run down I seriously doubt that will happen any time soon.

unpopular move

@verizon.net

How about this?

File bankruptcy (most favorable of chapters), unload all that massive debt.. and start anew? Then upgrades could go smooth as new money can start rolling in to finance system-wide upgrades. Sometimes it's hard work and you have to cut the dead wood out of the system (debt load). I'm not saying this move would be popular or wouldn't cause some intermediate pain (poor, poor shareholders and bond/debt holders).. but given the fact that other major industries are heading for similar type pain (mortgage & banking industries are good examples), why not the weakest of the telcos? If qwest doesn't start to get serious about 21st century networks, it will never get done.

I always recommend this.. if your in comcast, qwest or at&t telecom/cablecom zones that can't fulfill your telecommunications needs: MOVE!
