story category Will Google Bid To Lose In Wireless Auction?
Not if they know what's good for them...

No word from Apple today indicating they plan to bid in the 700Mhz auction, which would seem to derail last week's well publicized theory by PBS's Bob Cringley that Apple & AT&T aren't getting along. Cringely suggested that AT&T's CEO intentionally announced a 3G iPhone to hurt Christmas sales -- as a revenge move for Apple planning to build their own network and offer VoIP over iPhone. Today is the deadline for announcing your intent to bid.

Meanwhile Bloomberg insists that Google, who is bidding at auction, may bid to lose. The report insists that because Google's recent stage show netted them some carterfone-esque conditions courtesy of the FCC, they'll only put up the minimum bid for appearance's sake.
When the auction starts in January, Google may bid the $4.6 billion minimum for one slice of the spectrum and let Verizon Wireless or AT&T Inc. prevail with a higher offer. Losing would mean Google doesn't have to build its own wireless network. The winner will still be forced to build an open service.
Sort of. As we've mentioned, the conditions Bloomberg is referring to are packed with legal loopholes that could make them largely meaningless. In fact, if a bidder plays their cards right, it is possible to win spectrum with no conditions attached. In other words, if Google really wants to see open 700Mhz networks, they will need to bid to win.

Google will bid to win.

A bidder can play its cards right or bidders can play their cards right, but a bidder may not play their cards right.

I expect Google to play its cards right.

I don't think Google really wants this spectrum. But they may get stuck with it with the minimum bid if the telcos have no interest in the slice of spectrum that has the Carterfone-like rules. In other words, Google has to bid and the telcos may just walk away from this particular slice of spectrum leaving Google with the un-envious job of making it work.

I'd like nothing more than to see the almighty google get stuck with this and their utopian idea of running wireless. Way to ruin it for everybody google.

Bob

Bob could still be right. He mentioned in his article that Apple may look at VoIP apps ... I'm betting it wouldn't be hard to just create a new iPhone model that works on this new network.

Apple still follows the rules of their agreement with AT&T and Apple gets a new phone tied to a potentially free network with HUGE profit margins.

Apple has developed a great web interface, it's a closed phone so Google knows the interface and apps will be very functional ... it's a win-win for both companies - and it doesn't require Apple to bid on any spectrum.

Where does this money go???

Who gets all the money raised by this auction? Surely the FCC doesn't need 4.6 billion to run itself...right??

It goes to the US Treasury and the General Fund.

That's funny! Honestly though who really think if the government got 9 trillion that they would spend it on paying its debt? Its like giving a loan to a crack addicted whore. Your never gonna see that money again.
