SureWest Acquires Everest Broadband
California fiber company heads for Missouri
by Karl Bode Thursday 13-Dec-2007 tags: dsl · Fiber · business · SureWest Internet
Sacramento-based SureWest Communications has announced plans to acquire Kansas City-based Everest Broadband for $173 million. The deal will bring 200,000 revenue generating units (each RGU is an individual component in a triple play offer) under their control. The deal also gives Surewest 117,000 new voice access customers. The deal will more than double SureWest’s triple-play residential subscriber base -- though many of those customers are getting fiber services back home in California. Back in March the operator laid claim to being the "fastest Internet speed in the country" after they started offering 50Mbps symmetrical fiber.

Monthly caps?

Isn't this the fttp company with monthly download cap (limits) with overages either throttled or surcharged (not sure which one)?

Not exactly the best fttp service you can get if its capped/surcharged.

Re: Monthly caps?

It's for bragging rights only. And proves once again that no ISP can afford to provide these speeds unchecked.

I believe (going from memory) that the 50Mbps fiber is not capped, but the lower speeds (like 20Mbps) are. Of course you're paying $415.18 for that speed with HDTV & VoIP in a triple play bundle...

Verizon could do 50/50 symmetrical for $130-140.. they do 20/20 for $65 now.. of course if every customer in their 32 subscriber per node wanted 50/50... they'd have do some minor upgrades to gpon not only enabling 50/50, but 100/100 down the line. The way cable companies deploy.. surewest customers would rather have the 20/20 unlimited rather than 50/50 given the fact that the nearest competition (in the footprint) barely breaks 10mbit (on a good day).

no drops

and this co still refuses to run a drop from the pole outside (where their fiber stops for our neighborhood) to our apartment despite many calls over the last 4 or so years to order service.

maybe they should be focusing on their EXISTING markets first..

Re: no drops

usually when CLECS overbuild, a contract is already been established and its hard to get into it. I know there are new laws opening that up, but it has to be worth the $$ to build in.

And what's in it for us?

Everest (a cable co) is in direct competition with TimeWarner, so I have to wonder what Surewest gets out of the deal, as well as what will happen to Everest customers... Will they see FTTP any time soon?

Re: And what's in it for us?

What does surewest get out of it? Heh, a small company that goes up against a giant and has 40% penetration in most areas is quite a good purchase, considering that a year ago seaport purchased everest for 70mil and is now worth double. I want that kind of investments
