Saving people from arson fire has got to be good press
(old news - 01:10PM Sunday Dec 16 2007)
tags: cable · Oddities · Comcast
Tipped by EO50 See Profile
Comcast may not be able to justify its notoriously bad service reputation but the company is getting some positive media attention today because of the actions of a few of its employees. Three techs who had installed cable in a building approximately five months ago happened to be in the area when a fire began. They came to the rescue and managed to save two people from the disaster. The fire appears to be arson but who set it remains unclear. Over in our forums there have been a few jokes about the employees setting the fire themselves to play hero and give Comcast a better name. However, the consensus seems to be that the techs deserve some props from their life-saving efforts.

Good Job

All comments about Comcast's business reputation aside, it's good that someone was there to save people in time of crisis.

Kudos to them

Comcast can't buy this kind of press. They should give those guys a huge bonus.

But the tech didnt get the PR, his company did. Along with the myriad of other articles damming Comcast.
So a group of techs do something good.. and its no longer a reflection on the company but on the individual.

Techs drilling holes to get their jobs done is part of their job, saving lives is not part of their job.

I will disagree with you here.. it is every human beings job to save lives if lives are in need of saving.

As for a previous statement, while I agree that Comcast sometimes takes needless criticism (and I hate comcast so do not think I am standing up for them), in this case, it had nothing to do with the company other then their decision (a good one by the looks of it) to hire people who would risk their own lives to help others. It stops there, however as for the guys drilling into a gas line, that was done while performing a task assigned to them/him/her by corporate.

So yes, Comcast should take a beating for the last statement, as for the saving of lives, the most they should be able to do is maybe is milk the fact they hire selfless emplyees who are willing to help out despite the dangers to themselves, and thats it.

What i was getting at was that it is not in the job description of cable employees to save lives. And yes, it is an unwritten rule that everyone should try to save a life when one is in danger if it is at all possible.

It is part of the job...that is why every tech is annually recertified in CPR and basic first aid.

It goes to Comcast as a company when there is a pattern, like

»Comcast Contractor Held For Double Murder
»Napping Comcast Tech Fired
»The Phantom Comcast Install Order
»The Cable Guy Blew Up My Powerbook
»No Ground? Exploding Dishwasher
»Botched Comcast Install Blows Up House

Perhaps now after a Comcast tech help rescue victims in the Minneapolis bridge collapse and now the fire, they can turn the neg stereotype of their techs around. Perhaps if a Comcast tech cures cancer and brings Democracy to Cuba, people will have good feelings about Comcast.

As a Sirius Listener Id have to disagree.
My tech drilled into a gas line. The homeowner burried the meter inside a drywall in a basement he just finished, without permits.
My tech drilled from the outside, thought he hit cinder block. Pushed harder, smelled gas.
THe firedepartment had to come and breakdown his wall to find a gas meter.
Was the tech "inept"? Was Comcast at fault for hiring an "inept employee"?
He is one of the best employees I have. I actually got Comcast to hotel them for three days because it was fall and getting cold and they had no heat now.
The tech was worried sick about the situation, I had to spend an hour convincing him he did nothing wrong. He inspected both sides of the drill site and had no way of knowing an entire gas meter was covered inside a closed wall.

Not everything is black and white... unless thats how you choose to see things.

Re: Heroes

Well... what would you have said had the gas meter been outside the wall where it should have been, and the pipe running from the meter had been running through the wall 50 meters away from the meter (heh.. sorry could not resist), had the tech drilled through the pipe would you still not hold him responsible. No, you would, reagardles of where the tech is drilling or digging, it is up to the tech to take reasonable care, that means checking for electrical, plumbing and gas lines where they are doing the construction.

Now yes, the idiot who buried his gas meter (why.... I would love to know) has some liability, but the tech was ultimately responsible for hit it. A simple stud finder that checks for metal in a wall would have hinted at this problem.. its a $5 tool.. I suggest that installers invest in one...

They do have one. Provided.
If the tech did hit a line that was not hidden of course he is liable. It wouldnt be Comcasts poor training. It would be the techs negligence to follow proper procedures.
Depending on the situation and the area, a stud finder may or may not be of use.

You're correct! Because comcast is only allowed to be bagged on and called for the crap news and never anything positive.

I suppose the first aid training and safety courses techs are put through had very little to do as well...

... While comcast isn't in the business of 911 calls, it's comments like yours that expose some true colors around here. In other words, what you should have said, is Comcast can do no good and you'll only accept the bad.

So if this had NOTHING to do with Comcast or it's reputation because of the actions of the employees, then neither does the murder rap, the tech that fell asleep or the other recent bad press too as they only reflect on the tech.

Get real.

That too is true. I believe that anyone that holds a job and breaks the law while on the job or does something stupid like fall asleep, the employer should not be held acountable.
If im driving a Comcast truck and crash it into another car, Comcast should not be held responsible. If i decide to install a webcam in a customers shower to see them naked and im caught, comcast should not be responsible. Either legally or be up for bad press.

That word "acountable" is used way too much when legal matters are involved.
This is where greed comes in with lawsuits.
"humm, should i sue the guy that makes $35K installing cable or the multi million dollar company that he works for?"

Just stupid!

Whoever fucked up should pay, not others that are associated with them.

But this is just ME.

Re: Heroes

I do agree with your point on accountability. Sometimes, however, accountability does go up the chain sometimes. Ultimately, someone in the company decides who gets hired and who doesn't. If you're driving a Comcast truck and you hit someone, the situation needs to be examined. Are you normally a responsible, conscientious employee? Did you pass a drug screening? Are you properly licenced? Real accountability depends on the answers to questions like these. Ultimately it's the company's responsibility (or HR or whoever) to make sure they're hiring responsible, capable employees. It doesn't necessarily mean you're not responsible, but you're not solely to blame either.

Comcast Employees Arrive Right in the Nick of Time

Comcast will probably fire the brave employees because of insurance liability issues, taking time off their busy schedule without prior authorization, doing a good job outside of their job description, using company equipment not related to work, and suspecting them of being illegal immigrants. Wait a minute, those guys weren't Comcast employees, they were subcontractors.

You guys CAN'T have it both ways...

When the "comcast employee" raped and murdered a lady, and people pointed out that it was a contractor, DAMN NEAR EVERY ONE held comcast to the fact that Comcast was responsible for the contractors as well..

So.. what is it people? Is comcast or is comcast NOT responsible for the contractors?

To the past few posts of people that have said "it was a contractor"... let's just say that there is so much I'd love to say but it was be "deleted by moderator" I doubt the hard drive would have a chance to even write my comments to disk.

Bad reporting KathrynV.

These heroes were not Concast employees as you state in your news piece.
They were subcontractors contracted on an 'as needed' basis.

Thumbs down for Concast again.

To the selfless subcontractors: may the tangible rewards for your heroism be as great as the non-tangible!
