TDS launches WiMax in Wisconsin
by Karl Bode Tuesday 22-Jan-2008 tags: business · wireless · alternatives · bandwidth · TDS
TDS Telecom (see our user DSL reviews) today announced that they've launched WiMax wireless broadband service in Madison, Wisconsin. The company, which has been testing the technology in employee homes, says the service will be available to some 65,000 customers in the Madison area.

TDS is offering three residential tiers: 2Mbps/1Mbps for $45, 4Mbps/2Mbps for $50, and 6Mbps/3Mbps for $55.

Customers can add VoIP service with 30 minutes of long distance per month and unlimited local calls for another $5. VoIP with 300 minutes of long distance is another $10 on top of the price of just Internet, and VoIP with unlimited long distance is another $15 on top of the price of Internet.

TDS is also offering symmetrical business tiers ranging from 2-4Mbps that start at $129 per month. The company notes that 3Mbps is now the fastest upstream speed available in Madison. According to the company, the service is available to anyone within two miles from the towers on the western and eastern sides of the city.

Kudos!

Good for them! It's nice to see speeds inching toward symmetrical.

How long before they're a news item here due to throttling Bittorrent traffic though?

Re: Kudos!

Definitely good news for those in madison. 6/3 isn't bad. Considering most of the U.S. is not going to get fios or other services, this would be a great next best thing. 3mbit up is pretty respectable considering its 375KB/S.

Re: Kudos!

and most of Madison is not getting WiMax so nothing changes....

Available to about 1/4 of Madison and about 1/10 of metro area it appears. Probably the same people in line to get the next great thing from whatever ISP is there now.

Actually, it's not. Maybe for your Roadrunner it is but for ATT DSL there is no prohibition on servers. They are explicitly allowed.

So AT&T Worldnet DSL and AT&T DSL via SBC Global are two separate entities?

Yup. ATT Worldnet is the dialup ISP they ran before being eaten by the cowboys in Texas. They had DSL in some markets but not very much.

The current ATT DSL TOS states: "[S]ervice is intended for use with a single computer or a network of computer/servers."

I wonder what they thought people would use their DSL line for, if not a single or network of computers? Ha.

That's just an excerpt from a longer section, but yeah. It is language which used to be used to distinguish between business and personal use but the distinction was erased years ago. The wording is still there though, and you can bet the lawyers get paid by the word...

Two pertinent questions:

A.) What's the average latency?
B.) What does one need to do (besides a rain dance) to get good reception? Will first floor windows surrounded by trees and hills be a problem?

I haven't heard avg latency but I've heard latency can be as low as 50ms and even lower. They are using 802.16e at 2.5Ghz, same as Sprint.

If you plan to use as a fixed connection at home, you can add a WiMAX repeater on roof so that it gets LOS, which should be available to consumers this year.

How can a consumer purchase and use a "licensed band" device...?

I'm not sure what the legality of the scenario he described is, but wouldn't it be about the same as owning a cell phone? That's licensed spectrum too...

Yes, who would pay $50 for 4/2 when you can get 6/3 for $55. That $55 price is the sweetspot of their offerings.

That is exactly what they were thinking and is why they created the tiers that way.

I guess that's pretty good for bb wireless?

But I feel bad for the people living 2.5mi. away who are bummed out.

Kind of what I was thinking. 2 miles? That's all? There are wireless providers around here doing three times that with off the shelf 802.11b gear....

Actually it is quite poor by today's standards. Current 900 Mhz systems have a lot more range at a tiny fraction of the cost. With this being such a micro deployment, it's creation is obviously not being based on any direct ROI studies, but for the publicity. That and $6 will get them a cup of StarBucks Coffee.

@shawcable.net

So is it here yet?

So finally it looks like WiMAX is here! Only took like 2 years after Intel declared WiMAX is here.

I'll bet you could get it 4miles away with an external antenna but the hardware probably isn't widely available yet.

Goodbye Charter?

Hmmm . . . well, that makes DirecTV a more compelling alternative to Big-Ten-Network-less Charter. Only reason I've been staying with Charter was to keep the broadband service.

VERY attractive pricing model!

I must say that I am extremely impressed by their pricing model. The internet options/pricing are fantastic, and $15 for unlimited voice is unbeatable! Assuming their service is good, I would expect this company to really take a bite out of the local market in their service area. I would buy this today if it were available in NYC......

Heck, I would love for a $5 local phone option. Considering I rarely use long distance, the 30-minutes would be more than enough for me.

@tds.net
They are using Cisco equipment for their VoIP deployment. I used to work in a building where their counterpart, TDS Metrocom was testing their VoIP centrex service. Metrocom and Telecom are both offering business users leased Cisco phones with TDS running the call manager. They deliver the service over 3Mbps symmetrical lines.

I can only assume they will extend this over the WiMax service as well. The business cost from Metrocom for the 3/3 service is $129/month if you take phone service from them.

I am now in Middleton which is right outside of Madison. We have 5/5 service on paper, but get 10/10 service in reality. Connection is presented via Ethernet. We pay $575/month. It is quite a both more than above, but I almost never have contention problems.

TDS Telecom is a good ISP.

Re: Now only if TDS would

Just a guess here but it would be logical for them to deploy this instead of DSL. A lot less expensive than copper considering all the costs of upgrading a RT or Co and conditioning a subscriber line for DSL. Also it can be rolled out to folks who do not have a phone line with them.

Don't forget that DSL is very distance sensitive: to get 6mb/sec down the customer needs to be on good copper and less than 8-9 kft from the DSLAM. Upload is limited to under 1 Mb/sec no matter how close you are. Over 15kft EWL, speeds drop very quickly.

They are stating a 2 mile limit now, I suspect that this limit is just for getting things rolling. As they gain experience, this distance should increase. That is just speculation however.... only TDS knows for sure.

Interesting... but it's been done elsewhere!

I'm currently traveling in the Dominican Republic and obviously need to stay connect. My cousin lend me his OneMax WiMax box and to my surprised the darned thing worked.

Although the speed is only 768/128 the box came with a RJ45 and RJ11 ports. To many a long story short the box is a "walking" VoIP source high speed access point for my computer.

The Service includes unlimited Local Calling, as well as 3 hours worth of calling to the US/Canada for about US$70 and 3 pennies a minute for any overages.

Now if the Sprints/Verizons/AT&Ts/TMos/Others of the world could get their heads out of their @$$es and finally come up with a way to blanket America with WiMax I'd be a happy camper.

Speed

May be good news for Madison area what good is that for all other users in other states. I have 3000 DL and it will not download more than 350K I think they have a cap on it. We now have Comcast now in town watching it close and checking on service may change over to them. I have been with TDS DSL since it came to town 4 yrs ago and it has never been a solid service. I have no good reports SORRY...

Re: Speed

I just got this service on the West side of Madison, and I could not be happier. The only issue is RF interference, but since TDS was smart and has its own spectrum it is limited. I am getting 5.1 mbits down to 6.1 mbits down all the time. The up varies from 500k to 2.8 mbits -- not sure why such a variance. But is quite nice. The Weston Place tower is high up as well. They have another tower that if its 40 feet of the ground that would be a miracle. In general a well thought out plan that really is nice to avoid having multiple telco's (i.e. AT&T) to point to when DSL fails. It should be a pretty decent option for most people. If anyone is interested I could take pictures of the roof install, and brick on the inside.

The tower is on their fiber ring so its quite fast unlike a bunch of bonded T-1's...

I'd like to see the pics. Charter just rolled out 16/2 service for the same price as TDSs new WIMAX. I went back to Charter. The first week on 16MB has been a delight. Even at peak night hours my latency is great. I really did like TDS, but Charter is the clear cut winner in Madison right now(imo). This is the last night on my TDS connection My Charter connection has been maxed out for the last week. Speedtests are right around 16MB/2MB 24x7.

Re: Speed

May I ask where you're located in Madison? I live on the west side, and when I go to Charter's site they show 10/1 as the highest option for $55. If I could get 16/2 I would probably choose Charter over TDS Wimax.

tokkun

@tds.net
Capital Times had reported that Charter would be offering 16/2 for $70/month. Are you saying that it's actually $55? On their website they list the 10/1 service for $59.99....
