| I hope they do quit the handset market. Yes, they have amazing design which consistently changes the form factor in cell phones (StarTac, RAZR), but they can't make a quality working product to save their lives.
Motorola phones suck huge. I wouldn't mind if they continued to design phones, as long as somebody else made them. The failure rate on Motorola is ridiculous.

| Re: razr The Motorola handset business has too problems. Firstly, they are revolutionary rather than consistently evolutionary. They do indeed come out with amazing new styles from time to time, but then they milk them way past their shelf life, whilst the likes of Nokia keep rolling out incremental, but market catching, changes. The second problem, as you say, is quality. Poor quality kills a company at every level without fail - period. | |

| Don't get me wrong, Moto does make some damn fine phones. When they work, they are easily the best phones on the market. The problem is, they have a very high failure rate, and every model has a consistent issue with that one particular model. Voice quality and feature set is hardly ever the issue, its other junk. Screens on the RAZR series go blank a lot. They also crack more easily than other thin phones. Battery charging has always been an issue with Moto's. Their older proprietary charging port on phones like the e815 was junk, and would stop working period. The new usb design is good, but batteries aren't holding a charge as well anymore.
And I just have to mention one of my Moto pet peeves; arrogance. They try to move certain proprietary stuff on their handsets in the vain belief they're better than everybody else. Up until recently, Motorola was the only manufacturer who put the send key on the right and end on the left, completely opposite of every other phone on the market. Drove me nuts.
I could go on and on, but like I said, if they wanted to stick to designing phones, I'd be okay with that. -- I'm laying pipe, all night long, laying pipe, to satisfy that woman.

| Re: razr I would tend to agree... I've had Moto gear back when the menus were cr@p, but the phones were built well:
Moto Star Tac/Micro Tac (AMPS/CDMA) Moto Timeport P7382i (GSM 1900) build in Germany! I still use my Moto V505, and I do like the V3xx House phone: cordless Moto
Positives: Design has improved Audio quality is good Standardized USB charger (why can't all phones use this!) Phones are great for Modding
Negatives: Overall physical durability/reliability has gone down Can be paired with a bad network (AT&T GSM) to make you think the phones are bad.
I personally disliked the 'accidental' ringer change settings on the side... too many missed calls. -- Canada = Hollywood North

As for their cable modems, my trusty sb5100 is nearing 4 years of constant use and it still runs like a champ. I would never use a modem that wasn't a Motorola.

| Re: razr I've got a Razr V3m that is 2 years old and still going strong (with a fresh new battery). My only complaint is the buttons are too small for my fat thumbs.
I don't have any plans right now to upgrade. The Razr A10 or 9 or whatever it is, is neat. But only because it has bigger buttons.

| Aw man! So my Razr2 might be my last Moto handset? That's unfortunate. I always found Motos to have the best call quality of any handset out there.
I always did wish they would diversify their lineup, though; not very much variety.

So if this is True who would make iden handset cell phones for Nextel? All I ever see they have are Motorola's.

| Re: iden I think by the time they actually stop making phones you won't be able to get a strictly iDEN phone anyway. Have you noticed how Nextel used to have new phones out pretty regularly? Now they they are a part of Sprint I have seen two or three new phones that operate solely on the iDEN network. On the Sprint side of the house (I just switched to there from Nextel) I could have gotten a phone that was a hybrid using Sprint's cell network and Nextel's iDEN radio network. I didn't use the radio much anymore so I opted for the Q instead (and I wanted something running Windows). I had various problems with it but was able to "replace" the Q with the Q9c within the 30-day period and have been pretty happy since. I don't know if the hybrid phones would fully failover to Nextel's network in the event you had Nextel service and not Sprint service though. | |

| nothing new in years There has been no real innovation in the handset division for years! The iphone was evidence that handset makers were not innovating and stagnating. Also, nothing new for their biggest supporter, Sprint.. all their high end phones were overpriced for years which hurt them in the market. I would have bought an upgraded Sprint phone, but the prices are too steep given the other products in the marketplace which didn't fully meet my needs either (missing at least ONE feature that kills the deal) | |

I had a Phase III DCT box and it has a DOCSIS modem and Ethernet port. It has a DOCSIS MAC address. Can I just activate it and start paying comcast $50/month for their HSI? HELL NO. -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0

| Wow E815 Users unite My goodness...there still a bunch of E815 users out there My E815 is starting to have problems cause the antenna came off the phone. The fact is that there is problems charging the phone. My Brother in law also got an e815 and it was an awsome phone, Verizon needed to stick with it longer. But charging on an E815 is a pain. My Contract is up soon, and im looking at getting a Samsung Flipshot.
Motorola is going to have a hard time competing with LG , Samsung and Nokia is really trying to get into the market. Motorola stock as drop and dropped lately, and while EMTA 's are good. Motorola just lost a lot of creative edge I have these wonderful cordless home phones that they make 5.8 GHZ phones, but it never really took off. Nothing is in the pipeline for Motorola in 2008.

| Miss my E815 That was the best phone I have ever owned. I literally cried when it died on me, just wouldnt charge anymore. The port died. Other than that I never had a problem, it really was a tank. But Verizon gave me a razr for free as they were no longer giving out the e815, a real shame.
