Popular service causes supply drain...

Verizon is facing a shortage of HD boxes, according to a company spokesperson and technician posts to our FiOS forums. According to one user, customers who want an HD Motorola settop from the company will have to wait until March 10 to get one. Install technicians say they're being told to keep HD DVRs and receivers (the shortage impacts both, the techs say) for repairs where possible and, for the moment, avoid "upselling" new customers from SD to HD while on location.

We've confirmed the shortage with Verizon. "It's true that we've had terrific demand for FiOS TV in general, and specifically for HD services and we're having to backorder HD boxes for some customers," Verizon spokesperson Bobbi Henson tells us. The company says they'll work as quickly as possible to fill back-ordered boxes.

"If we can't provide a customer with an HD box they'll receive a standard definition box with DVR that they can use for free until we send them their HD box," says Henson. "Because we deliver FiOS TV over a fiber connection straight into the home, our standard def looks incredible, plus the customer will enjoy a free DVR along with it."

Verizon recently passed the one million mark for total installed FiOSTV customers.

Not new.

Motorola had the same issue with Comcast and Time Warner last year.

Re: Not new.

Motorola's standard def DVRs are actually newer products than the HD ones.

The shortage is with HD DVRs only, AFAIK.

Customers calling in for an HD DVR will be given an SD DVR at no charge. When the HD ones come in, they'll then be shipped to the customers.

And still having problems with Comcast. Obviously Motorola is having problems building enough HD/DVR boxes no matter who is buying them.

Re: DVR

I had three installed Dec 21 2007 in SE PA region.
Didn't hear anything about a shortage.
Love the new boxes BTW although 18 hours recording time could use some improvement.

So is Cox

I had my HD-DVR go south and it took 3 weeks to get a replacement, and when I finally got it the HDMI port wasn't active. Now I'm on a waiting list for one with HDMI and am told it could be mid-March before I get one.

Standard definition has never looked incredible

"..our standard def looks incredible.."

That is impossible.
Standard definition has never looked incredible.

And I use a $3500 video scaler(VP50pro) and a $1000 noise reduction box(Algolith HDMI flea) It gets the SD picture looking as good as you can get and I would never describe an SD picture as incredible.
I've also been watching and recording HD since Summer 2001 so I'm used to watching HD content.

In comparison to the very highly compressed SD crap from DBS, it actually might!

Yup. Not to mention the loss of widescreen formatted video. You'll either get 4:3 chopped glory or letterboxed video that's too blurry when zoomed. DVD is standard def but at least they're usually anamorphic.

Well there's your problem... Get rid of all that expensive junk and it will look incredible. Incredibly awful maybe, but incredible nonetheless.

I had the opportunity to watch the Super Bowl in HD on Sunday and it looked very good, indeed. The new 42" Panasonic plasma TV I saw it on was rated at 720p, 1080i. It was served by a Dish network receiver, so I looked up Dish today and they advertise 720p, 1080i. I'm guessing that the picture I saw was as good as it gets via Dish.

Re: Standard definition has never looked incredible

since fox broadcasts in 720p, you weren't going to gain much by watching it on a 1080i tv.

Actually scaling it from 720p to 1080i you would actually lose information as well as picture quality on fast moving plays.

If it were broadcast in 720p, then I would hope that would be how it would be shown on an HD TV that supports 720p. Otherwise, I would think that you could get some weird results.

Re: Standard definition has never looked incredible

Most HD sets only display one resolution natively, either 1080i or 720p. Which ever one it doesn't support gets scaled. That's just the nature of the beast with fixed-pixel displays like DLP, LCD, or plasma. The only displays that can natively show both are CRT-based displays (either direct view or rear projection).

For the most part though watching one standard on a set designed for the other isn't that big of a deal. It's going to be a great picture either way. For the best details in a slow moving picture like a slow pan, 1080i will give you the best perceived picture as the human eye will see what it things to be 1080 lines of resolution. However with a fast moving screen like a football being thrown down the field with the crowd in the background, the eye will detect that only 540 lines are drawn every refresh and it can make the picture look shaky. In those cases, 720p gives the better picture because all 720 lines are drawn every refresh.

Now with 1080p it's the best of both worlds. Too bad nothing will be broadcast in that for years to come.

Re: Standard definition has never looked incredible

I'm going to assume that the picture I was watching was not scaled but was 720p as broadcast because I did not observe any shakiness at any time during the broadcast.

Broken DVR's

Mine just broke but Tivo has plenty of HD DVR's that work even better with FIOS cablecards..

So getting our second Tivo was a no brainer.

Free TVs

I've heard that thats not all they are short of. It was on the news yesterday that people have been complaining of waiting for months for their free 17" LCDs. They should be giving alternatives if they ran out of the ones they were advertising - something "better" in its place.

$15.99 a pop

Wow, at $15.99 each per month rental they can't seem to crank them out fast enough, in addition to the service price & franchise fee. Hmm...

Is that I violin I hear?

I heard today from a tech who was here. That some exec for vz miscalulated the demand for the boxes and did not place orders for enough.

I got an idea

Make it easier to return the DVR and I'll return mine. I'm faced with the option of paying $25 and waiting all day for a tech just so he can pick it up, or driving 80+ miles to drop it off. As of right now its currently sitting in my closet gathering dust. Somehow I don't think I'm the only one in this predicament after buying a Tivo. They should really send you a box to ship it back in.

Re: I got an idea

They are supposed to be able to give you a return number and you can take it to a UPS Store and they'll box it up for you.

@bell.ca

Oh it must be nice....

For a telco to have such demand for an HD STB and have wonderful infrastructure to support it. Plus they're really nice about the delay in providing the hardware.

Here in Canada, it took forever to get HD DVR from the leading telco's DTH Sat. service. Elsewhere, the HD IPTV experience is not exactly stellar in terms of number of receivers, hardware, remaining broadband bandwidth for internet, etc.

The one big question: How friendly is FiosTV to people using Vista Ultimate and windows media centre to record tv? What's the analog overlay like? Do they have ClearQAM channels? OpenCable support?

Why?

Why does Verizon even continue to order SD boxes? Is the price difference between an HD and an SD box large enough to make the inevitable switch-over worth it?

Gnaget

@verizon.net

oops

Heh, makes me laugh cause I have 2 of them in my trunk that I have been meaning to take back for 6 months, and i keep forgetting. Been paying $30/month for them in the mean time

Cox has the same problem

No HD DVRs or plain HD boxes. On a list. Have been for three weeks and no one has called to give a time line.
