Insight Offers 20Mbps
But only to 4% of users on first come, first served basis...
We first reported that Insight Communications started offering 20Mbps/1.5Mbps cable broadband service in limited markets last November. Today the company issued a press release stating that the speedier tier was being expanded across their entire Kentucky and Indiana footprint. As we've previously reported, the tier is being offered for $20 more than their 10Mbps service.
quote:
"We’ve been offering the fastest Internet download speeds in our serviceable areas with our Insight Broadband 10.0 service," said Paul Meltzer, senior vice president, product management for Insight. "And, while this service already offers customers the ability to download their favorite movies, music and games at a fraction of the time it takes using DSL, Broadband 20.0 confers extra bragging rights on Internet enthusiasts. In addition, it provides enough bandwidth for all members of an enthusiastic household to share a connection and still experience superior performance."
Interestingly, the company says the tier will only be available on a "first-come, first-served basis." The company says that means about 4% of their userbase will be able to sign up for the new tier, while they try and make sure the nation's tenth largest cable broadband network can handle the strain.

Since they run Sandvine - Limewire and BT is useless - your statement is moot....

Thank you Insight

It just figures they would do this one month after they had Comcast take over our area.

so, they shouldn't have done it at all? they sold off a huge portion of their customer base (read: overhead cost) and now they're offering upgrades to their existing customers.

i personally won't be taking advantage of it, but i'm quite sure others will.

Re: Thank you Insight

No, I'm not saying that at all. I think it's great they did it. It just sucks for me because I will probably never see it here. I know, pity me. So as I said, it just figures they leave and then do it. I am a Insight fan and it was a real let down when they left our area. I never really had a problem with their service. When I did it was corrected very fast and their customer service in this area was superb.

InsightBB is expensive enough already.

I think I'll stick with their 10Mbps service for the time being. I already pay $38/mo. for what I have now, but to pay an additional $20/mo. to upgrade my broadband service to 20Mbps down/1.5Mbps up simply isn't worth the extra money. If this upgrade were being offered for an extra $10/mo., I'd probably consider it.

What really sucks, though, is that here in Bowling Green, KY, AT&T is the major telephone company. If I was able to get Verizon FiOS here in Bowling Green, which unfortunately I can't, I'd ditch Insight in a heartbeat.

$38/mo for 10Mbps is not bad...

You must have a good market there... $38/mo for 3 MBps here is a good deal.

Good luck..

My parents live in a relatively affluent subdivision in the heart of Lexington and they cant get their supposed 10Mb connection to work better than 5.5...

I will stick with my 6Mb DSL, soon to be 12Mb ADSL2 from Windstream.

Good of them

At least they are not selling to everyone and then having a crappy network that's overloaded.

I remember when Road Runner opened up in North Carolina and only had a single DS3 feeding it. About 10 days after launch you could not get anywhere in the evenings. Took them a month to get a OC3 installed.

Good Job!

I think this company should be praised for only selling this tier to 4% of their userbase.... We all know how some ISPs oversell their top tiers and wind up slowing down the entire network for a region..

They could have just as easily sold the tier to 20% or more of their subscribers and wound up with horrible congestion... They put their subscribers first, money second in this case.

Re: Good Job!

i suspect the 4% thing is to see what demand they have for it, and use the extra 20.00/mo to finance upgrading so they can offer it to a wider audience of customers.
