MDU, apartment installs should now go much easier....

Verizon has struggled with installing FiOS in apartment complexes and MDUs (multiple dwelling units) -- where a fifth of their customers live. Given that traditional fiber can't be bent without signal degredation, installs in and around apartment buildings and condos have proven tricky. Verizon, who's finishing negotiations with NYC and is preparing to deploy FiOS in the big apple, is going to be helped greatly by a new development at Corning: bendable fiber.

Click for full size
Dubbed Clearcurve, Corning's solution infuses the cladding that surrounds the fiber's narrow core with nanostructures. Those nanostructures act as light guardrails creating a 25 trillion bits per second cable that can be wound into tight loops without degrading connectivity (see very cool demo video).

Obviously this is a huge boon to FTTH carriers like Verizon, who'll be able to snake fiber in and around a house to their heart's delight. Verizon worked closely with Corning during the development of Clearcurve, and now according to Corning, the baby bell has officially ordered the first batch of product.

"This is the year that Verizon moves into high gear in deploying FiOS TV and FiOS Internet to apartment buildings, condos and similar multiple dwelling units," said Claire Beth Nogay, senior vice president and chief network officer for Verizon Telecom. "Corning’s bendable optical fiber cable is particularly valuable in the tight spaces typical of these sorts of buildings. ClearCurve rugged drop cable is an initial product in what promises to be a family of specialized bendable fiber products we expect to use across our network going forward."

Heck, BBR users are used to reading the news on this site about things they haven't heard of being used in the field yet. For instance, how many reports have you read about speed tests over the internet that break new records all the time, followed by QQing in the comments on this site.

Because installing to MDUs is still expensive. All this did was negate the labor of having to install conduits through the entire MDU.

Well, if they used for online education, they might be able to get a better job.

Of course, most will probably just use it to surf porn or watch YouTube video...

Remember the internet can be used to discuss gang turf, arrange gang fights, and collaborate over gang rats to arrange appropriate drive bys for them, and also post gang intimidation videos on liveleak or youtube.

This is an infrastructure investment. Just like building roads, sewers, water, fire, police etc.

Will deliver high speed Internet. Cost be bit/per/second is very low. Hopefully price for basic package will also be very low. More people will be able to afford high speed access.

Cheap high speed access will encourage companies to locate. Possibility adding new jobs.

It is a little like asking what was the benefit of the Internet highway system. It had profound effect on culture and economy. I have every reason to expect high speed Internet will also have profound effect.

"...preparing to deploy FiOS in the big apple"

News Flash - FiOS is already deployed in part of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

Edit: I'm sorry - I forgot to add the Bronx and Manhattan too. So, they're already offering internet and phone in parts of all 5 boros.

red line

Just because it can go everywhere, doesn't follow that it will.. Verizon is notorious of redlining the most profitable locations FIRST, then working it's way down the totem pole.
Are you really serious that they will wire up the mdu apts of the Morrisania section of the Bronx over row homes in Mill Basin Brooklyn or Cadman Plaza?

Re: red line

who cares....it's business. What's the point of them installing it to the places that can't/won't buy it? That's like saying that Cadillac should be required to open their dealerships in the places of a city that "need" nice new cars rather than the places that will actually be able to afford them.

Actually, they already have in Spanish Harlem. Not exactly Trump's neighborhood yet it is getting more and more FIOS deployed every day.

You are full of BS.

Locally, they installed in my subdivision before the next one over and those homes are worth about 100K+ more than the ones in my subdivision.

Also, Stafford County and Prince William Counties are lagging well behind Spotsylvania county in Va. Both of those are further North (closer to DC) with home values much higher. I don't think Stafford County has any installs yet, but VZ is pushing hard in Spotsy.

I'm building FiOS every day in the slums of Providence, RI, ... they could have, and maybe should have moved to areas where prospective customers haven't run bills up on the cable company and the satellite company only to move to FiOS so they can avoid paying their bill. It's a business, Cox won't provide service to customers off the beaten path unless they pay thousands, and I mean thousands of dollars to get the coax to the premise. Verizon seems to be running fiber to even the most outlying homes in the area it is serving.

MDU FiOS

I've had MDU FiOS for nearly a year now, our ONT is one building over where all the phone lines come into our section of the complex. Kind of annoying to know you have pure fiber, but can only access it through VDSL hardware. Yet it still pulls a perfect 15/2 everytime I bother to check.

We're moving to a detached house (ounce again) in 4 months, then I'll be saying hello to 15/15 GPON fiber!

Lucky you. My town had this stuff placed over 2 years ago. Now I mean the town not where I happen to live. The Garden Apartment complex I live in was cut off. As soon as the fiber comes close. BAM it hangs a right down a side street. It comes up the next the nothing it just gets cut off. I've been desperate to get FIOS so I can kick CableVision to the curb. Oh well hope they get movin on that bendable now.

I fail to see the point of this product

Existing fiber patch cords can do a 180 degree bend in around 3-5 inches with minimal loss, just as long as the bend is even with no kinks. Outside plant cable has more stringent bending radius', however underground most conduit is designed not to have any tight bends, to facilitate easy cable pull in.

The only place tight bends could remotely exist, are in the home runs (conduit from suites in a MDU to a central point on the floor) at witch point they could probably arrange to place the box and run cat5 to the suite

I would say that is closer to 50% of "designed not to have any tight bends". Its amazing what general contractors think fiber can do and equally amazing how big a fit they throw when you explain the entrance ducts are not going to work if they are shaped like an S.

Mostly drops

I see this as a solution for the MDU's installs. I did not see the rep showing any OSP cables that we use will the steel/fiberglass strength members and/or armor shielding. I guess that we will have to continue to keep bends down to a minimum with these cables.

We have be using these bendable jumpers in the CO's for about the last 6 months around here. It is amazing the loss that a jumper can have inside a fiber trough when it it routed wrong.(WAY TOO LONG) I see people trying to hide all that slack up there all the time and not realizing what they are doing to the signal.
